  • Reactor internals are sensitive to dynamic loads such as earthquakes and flow induced vibration. Thus, it is essential to identify the dynamic characteristics to evaluate the seismic integrity of the structures. However, a full-sized system is too large to perform modal experiments, making it difficult to extract data on its modal characteristics. In this research, we constructed a finite element model of the APR1400 reactor internals to identify their modal characteristics. The commercial reactor was selected to reflect the actual boundary conditions. Our FE model was constructed based on scale-similarity analysis and fluid-structure interaction investigations using a fabricated scaled-down model.

  • Hammer forging was employed for Alloy 718 disk. The change in grain size during hot forging depends very much on dynamic recrystallization. The final grain size depends especially on the critical strain$($\varepsilon$_C)$/TEX> for dynamic recrystallization and Zener-Holloman parameter(Z). In this study, the critical strain$($\varepsilon$_C)$, the strain for 50 pct. recrystallization$($\varepsilon$_{0.5})$ and fraction of dynamic recrystallization(Xdyn) were measured by compression tests. FE simulation was also carried out ot predict the evolution of microstructure. The strain, strain rate and temperature distribution predicted by forging simulation can be effectively used to predict the distribution of grain sizes in the forged workpiece. The present model predictions showed an excellent agreement with the microstructural evolution of hammer-forged Alloy 718 disks.

  • Finite element analysis is frequently used to get dynamic characteristics of complex structures. Since the results often show differences from experimentally measured ones, updating of finite element models is performed to make the FE results agree with measured ones. Among several model updating methods, one is to use frequency response function data. This paper investigates characteristics of the model updating method using simulated and experimental data for a cantilever beam. Damping effect is included in FE models, and FRFs for rotational displacements are calculated from FRFs for translational displacements using interpolation.

  • This paper presents a three-dimensional flexible pavement simulated in ANSYS subjected to moving vehicular load on the surface of the pavement typical for the road section in Nepal. The adopted finite element (FE) model of pavement is validated with the classical theoretical formulations for half-space pavement. The validated model is further utilized to understand the damping and dynamic response of the pavement. Transient analysis of the developed FE model is done to understand the time varying response of the pavement under a moving vehicle. The material properties of pavement considered in the analysis is taken from typical road section used in Nepal. The response quantities of pavement with nonlinear viscoelastic asphalt layer are found significantly higher compared to the elastic pavement counterpart. The structural responses of the pavement decrease with increase in the vehicle speed due to less contact time between the tires of the vehicle and the road pavement.

  • In the present study, a suitable mathematical model considering parabolic transverse shear strains for dynamic analysis of laminated composite skew plates under different types of impulse and spatial loads was presented for the first time. The proposed mathematical model satisfies zero transverse shear strain at the top and bottom of the plate. On the basis of the cubic variation of thickness coordinate in in-plane displacement fields of the present mathematical model, a 2D finite element (FE) model was developed including skew transformations in the mathematical model. No shear correction factor is required in the present formulation and damping effect was also incorporated. This is the first FE implementation considering a cubic variation of thickness coordinate in in-plane displacement fields including skew transformations to solve the forced vibration problem of composite skew plates. The effect of transverse shear and rotary inertia was incorporated in the present model. The Newmark-${\beta}$ scheme was adapted to perform time integration from step to step. The $C^0$ FE formulation was implemented to overcome the problem of $C^1$ continuity associated with the cubic variation of thickness coordinate in in-plane displacement fields. The numerical studies showed that the present 2D FE model predicts the result close to the analytical results. Many new results varying different parameter such as skew angles, boundary conditions, etc. were presented.

  • The CAMUS 2000-1 experimental program were performed in France to investigate of the 1/3-scaled reinforced concrete bearing walls behavior on the shaking table under biaxial earthquake loading. The nonlinear 3D finite element analysis of push over test and linear dynamic analysis under biaxial earthquake loading are investigated with the concrete damaged plasticity model using ABAQUS.

  • In order to analyze accurately the vibration of a structure by using the finite element method (FEM), we have to model a analytical structure as a numerical model with many degrees-of-freedom. However, in this case, the FEM needs much computation time and storage. The authors developed the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method (FE-TSCM) for overcoming the drawback of the FEM. In this paper, the authors apply the FE-TSCM to the in-plane vibration analysis of general plates with various shapes. Two numerical examples, a rectangular plate and a triangular plate, are used to compare the results of the FE-TSCM and the FEM. Through the numerical calculation, we confirm that the FE-TSCM can be applied to the in-plane free or forced vibration analysis of the general plates with various shapes and is effective to in-plane vibration analysis of general plates.

  • There have been lots of efforts to analyze the dynamic characteristics of mechanical systems. However, it is difficult to know the dynamic characteristics of mechanical systems composed of many parts with joints. Specially, in case of a bolted joint structure, no effective modeling method has been defined to acquire dynamic characteristics of the structure, using the finite element (FE) analysis. In this research, a linear dynamic model is developed for bolted joints and large interfaces using con frusta method and linear spring elements, respectively. The developed modeling method for bolted joints is verified based on the experimental result.

  • Recently, military vehicles that are being driven are equipped with a lot of electronic devices. The military vehicles are easily exposed to impact. Thus, they have to be designed robustly to ensure that the stability of the vehicle and the electronic equipment. In order to design the vehicles efficiently, the dynamic characteristics of a military vehicle have to be identified exactly. The main frame has a significant role to the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle. Thus, this research was progressed mainly with the frame. By carrying out road tests, the characteristics could be identified. Also, based on the characteristics, we constructed FE model of the frame and performed the analysis of the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle.
