  • The interaction between ocean and ice shelf is a critical physical process in relation to water mass transformations and ice shelf melting/freezing at the ocean-ice interface. However, it remains challenging to thoroughly understand the process due to a lack of observational data with respect to ice shelf cavities. This is the first study to simulate the variability and circulation of water mass both overlying the continental shelf and underneath an ice shelf and an ice tongue in the Terra Nova Bay (TNB), East Antarctica. To explore the properties of water mass and circulation patterns in the TNB and the corresponding effects on sub ice shelf basal melting, we explicitly incorporate the dynamic-thermodynamic processes acting on the ice shelf in the Regional Ocean Modeling System. The simulated water mass formation and circulation in the TNB region agree well with previous studies. The model results show that the TNB circulation is dominated by the geostrophic currents driven by lateral density gradients induced by the releasing of brine or freshwater at the polynya of the TNB. Meanwhile, the circulation dynamics in the cavity under the Nansen Ice shelf (NIS) are different from those in the TNB. The gravity-driven bottom current induced by High Salinity Shelf Water (HSSW) formed at the TNB polynya flows towards the grounding line, and the buoyance-driven flow associated with glacial meltwater generated by the HSSW emerges from the cavity along the ice base. Both current systems compose the thermohaline overturning circulation in the NIS cavity. This study estimates the NIS basal melting rate to be 0.98 m/a, which is comparable to the previously observed melt rate. However, the melting rate shows a significant variation in space and time.

  • BACKGROUND: Ammonia is a causative substance for the fine particulate matters (PM2.5) and generates dust through atmospheric reactions. Agricultural sector accounts for 79.3% of ammonia emissions in Korea. Urea and composted organic fertilizer (COF) are used in the soil for the purpose of supplying nutrients in grapevine orchards. This study was conducted to investigate estimates of ammonia emission and examine fruit quality from the rain proof cultivation of the 'Beni Balad', applied by urea and COF to the soil. METHODS AND RESULTS: Urea, COF1, and COF2 were applied at the rates of 119, 135, and 271 kg ha-1 respectively. Ammonia emissionwas measured using a dynamic flow-through method. CONCLUSION(S): Ammonia emissions by urea and COF treatments to 'Beni Balad' soils under rain proof cultivation were calculated to be 2.63, 12.95, 2.05, and 3.97 kg NH3-N ha-1 day-1, respectively for the control, urea, COF1, and COF2. Urea soil application increased soluble solids, firmness, and anthocyanin content in fruits at harvest, and COF1 application increased the soluble solids and anthocyanin content. For all the treatments, acidity increased in the harvested fruits.

  • In this paper, system dynamics considering dynamics and time was examined to study the changes in system structure according to reinforcement (policy intervention) of regulation and punishment for fishing boats, and the strategizing directions were analyzed. Until now, regulations and punishments on fishing boats have been conducted temporarily and short-term as a precautionary measure to prevent accidents and imposed penalties. However, due to various anomalous side effects, the expected results were not achieved, negligent accidents occurred constantly, and follow-up measures were repeated. Resultantly, the regulation and punishment of fishing boats is a reinforced safety standard, and there is a necessity to improve facilities, equipment, and industry, and develop technology (including time delay) to prevent accidents. However, as the negative (illegal) activities continue without immediate and significant resistance, the safety blind spot for accident prevention cannot be minimized. Thus, policy intervention based on linear thinking without sufficiently considering variables of the dynamic mechanism and time can distort the basic values pursued by the policy. For the regulation and punishment of fishing boats, a strategy to supplement the mechanism should be prepared prior to the preparation of reinforced safety standards. Improvement and development of related technologies, mandatory training hours for anglers, fishing industry, and related organizations, proposal of specific action plan for Fishing Management and Promotion Act for growing fishing-related industries.

  • The present study attempts to develop the theoretical model for the damage estimation of offshore tubular members which are subjected to the accidental impact loads due to collision, falling objects and so on. For the reasons of the simplicity of the problem being considered, however, this paper postulates that the accidental load can be approximated to be the quasi-static one, in which dynamic effects are negelcted. Based upon the theoretical and experimental results which are obtained from the present study as well as the existing literature, the load-displacement relations taking the interaction effect between the local denting and the global bending deformation into account are presented in the explicit form when the concentrated lateral load acts on the tubular member whose end condition is supposed to be rotation ally free and axially restrained, in which membrane forces develop. Thus, the practical estimation of damage deformation for the local denting and the global bending damage of tubular members against the accidental loads is possible and also the collision absorption capability of the member can be calculated by performing the integration of the area below the given load-displacement curves, provided that all the energy is dissipated to the deforming the member itself.

  • This study is to investigate the dynamic relationship between international capital flows and won exchange rate to the major currency in Korea. As the results of Granger causality test, international capital flows Granger-cause currency rate volatility in the short term. However, over time, won exchange rate volatility Granger-cause international capital flows in Korea. According to the results by period divided based on 2008 financial crisis, international capital flows have the significant effects on won-dollar exchange rate volatility before 2008 crisis although currency rate volatility Granger-cause international capital flows after the crisis. As the results of impulse-response function of the basis of VAR, foreign exchange rate volatility has no connection with international capital flows before the crisis while it doesn't after. After the crisis, currency rate volatility has promoted international capital flows, while its influence diminishes as time passes. As these results, the uncertainty of foreign exchange market tend to influence the international capital flows rather than vice versa in Korea. Thus, it would be a more effective policy to control the uncertainty of market than the direct restrictions international capital flows.

  • Real-time monitoring technology is critical for ensuring the safety and reliability of nuclear power plant structures. However, the current seismic monitoring system has limited system identification capabilities such as modal parameter estimation. To obtain global behavior data and dynamic characteristics, multiple sensors must be optimally placed. Although several studies on optimal sensor placement have been conducted, they have primarily focused on civil and mechanical structures. Nuclear power plant structures require robust signals, even at low signal-to-noise ratios, and the robustness of each mode must be assessed separately. This is because the mode contributions of nuclear power plant containment buildings are concentrated in low-order modes. Therefore, this study proposes an optimal sensor placement methodology that can evaluate robustness against noise and the effects of each mode. Indicators, such as auto modal assurance criterion (MAC), cross MAC, and mode shape distribution by node were analyzed, and the suitability of the methodology was verified through numerical analysis.

  • This paper investigates how TMT's cognitive traits affect R&D investment. Drawing on the attention-based view, we propose that TMT's future orientation and risk preference increase the level of R&D investment. As R&D activities have long-term goal of generating proprietary knowledge, it is important to understand how TMT's attention toward future and risk affect R&D investment. Also, we test the moderating effect of CEO duality on R&D investment. As the CEO plays a leadership role in the TMT, if the CEO's decision-making authority is highly concentrated, the impact of TMT on R&D may decrease. We measure CEO duality and CEO ownership stake as CEO characteristics. Based on a sample of 837 U.S. manufacturing firms, the results show that when TMT has a higher tolerance for risk and higher future orientation, R&D intensity increases. However, when CEO also serves as chairman of board and CEO has higher ownership, TMT's influence on R&D investment weakens. This implies that TMT and CEO has power dynamic that can change based on CEO power supporting status. Overall, it suggests that TMT's attention and CEO power are important factors to improve longer-term knowledge accumulation of firm.

  • An experimental/analytic study has been conducted to understand the adverse effects of low vehicle speed, high axle load and high tire pressure on the performance of asphalt pavements. Of 33 asphalt sections at KHC test road, two sections having different base layer thickness (180 mm versus 280 mm) are adopted for rollover tests. During the test, a standard three-axle dump truck maintains a steady state condition as moving along the wheel path of a passing lane, and lateral offsets and real travel speed are measured with a laser-based wandering system. Test results suggest that vehicle speed affects both longitudinal and transverse strains at the bottom of asphalt layer (290 mm and 390 mm below the surface), and even slightly influences the measured vertical stresses at the top of subbase and subgrade due to the dynamic effect of rolling vehicle. Since the anisotropic nature of asphalt-aggregate mixtures, the difference between longitudinal and transverse strains appears prominent throughout the measurements. As the thickness of asphalt pavement increases, the measured lateral strains become larger than its corresponding longitudinal strains. Over the limited testing conditions, it is concluded that higher axle weight and higher tire pressures induce more strains and vertical stresses, leading to a premature deterioration of pavements. Finally, a layered elastic analysis overestimates the maximum strains measured under the 1st axle load, while underestimating the maximum vertical stress in both pavement sections.

  • Previous researches related to emotional labor have been cross-sectional studies focusing on static differences in emotional exhaustion. Previous studies on these relationships have not highlighted the dynamic properties of these relationships. This purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of emotional labor strategy on perceived emotional exhaustion and depression. This study was conducted by paying attention to the fact that service industry workers who have to respond kindly to customers often have to show emotions which is necessary for their business to the outside world rather than showing their true emotions. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, it was confirmed that surface acting had a positive influence on emotional exhaustion, but deep acting had a negative influence to emotional exhaustion. Second, it was found that surface acting had a positive influence on depression, but deep acting had a negative influence on depression. Third, it was confirmed that the effect of deep acting on emotional exhaustion decreased when emotional labor was performed through deep acting on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, while emotional exhaustion was not significant on Thursdays and Fridays. Fourth, it was confirmed that the difference in the effect of emotional labor strategy on depression was greater in the case of performing emotional labor through surface acting than in the case of performing emotional labor through deep acting.

  • Recent trends in the gaming industry have highlighted a significant rise in games based on intellectual properties (IP), such as animations and webtoons. This study addresses a critical aspect of revenue generation for game companies: item sales. Specifically, it explores how the perceived value of character skins in IP-based games influences purchase intentions and, subsequently, how these intentions affect game loyalty. Utilizing 'Pokemon Unite'-a game that integrates the prominent IP Pokemon with the dynamic MOBA genre-this research investigates these relationships within a sample of Chinese users. The perceived value of character skins was delineated into six categories: aesthetic value, hedonic value, social value, personal value, economic value, and IP value. Findings indicate that, of these six value dimensions, five-hedonic, social, personal, economic, and IP values-significantly impact purchase intentions, with aesthetic value showing no significant effect. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that purchase intentions have a positive effect on game loyalty, with character loyalty partially mediating this relationship. These results underscore that players of IP-based games weigh a multifaceted array of values when deciding on character skin purchases and highlight the critical role these skins play in not only generating item sales but also enhancing game loyalty.
