Ethernet-based passive optical network(EPON) technology is being considered as a promising solution for next-generation broadband access network. It must have the property of high efficiency, low cost, and support quality of service(QoS). A major feature for this new architecture is the use of a shared transmission media between all connected optical network unit(ONU). Hence, medium access control(MAC) arbitration mechanisms are essential for the successful implementation of EPON. In this paper we propose a simple dynamic bandwidth allocation(DBA) algorithm that improves the performance of network and supports IP-based multimedia applications with the bursty data traffic. In addition, we introduce analytic models of proposed algorithms and prove the system based on our algorithm to be asymptotically stable. Simulation results show the new DBA algorithm provides high bandwidth efficiency and low queueing delay of ONU in EPON.

PONs (passive optical networks)은 운용비용이 저렴하고 높은 대역폭을 제공하기 때문에 가입자망에서 각광을 받고 있다. 최근에는 WDM (wavelength-division multiplexing)와 TDM (time-division multiplexing)을 결합한 TWDM PON이 가입자망에서의 새로운 해답으로 여겨지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 TWDM PON에 대한 새로운 MAC (media access control) protocol을 제안한다. 또한 TWDM PON에 대한 새로운 동적대역할당 방법을 제안하고 성능을 평가한다.

이 논문에서는 XG-PON (10-Gbps-capable passive optical network) 시스템에 대한 새로운 동적대역할당 알고리즘을 제안한다. 이 논문에서 고려하는 XG-PON 시스템에서는 ONU (optical network unit)가 명시적으로 전송요청을 OLT (optical line termination)로 보내지 않는다. OLT는 ONU의 상향 대역폭 사용량을 monitoring하여 ONU의 전송허가량을 추측하고 이를 바탕으로 동적대역할당을 실시한다.

이 논문에서는 TWDM PON의 잔여대역폭 분배 방법을 제안하며 그 성능을 평가한 결과를 소개한다. 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션을 통하여 기존 방법과의 평균 시지연 및 시지연분산을 비교한다.

In this paper, we show the movable boundary (MB) method is the effective bandwidth allocation strategy for the ABR service among existing bandwidth allocation methods. The MB method can gurantee the QOS requirement according to the service priority and improve bandwidth utilization using the characteristics of the ABR service. The threshold values of the MB, which have an important effect upon connection blocking probability(CBP) performance of each service, are obtained by simulation. The MB method with the fixed thresholds, however, may not have good performance to variation of input traffic parameters. We suggest the dynamic MB method which changes the threshold values adaptively according to the required bandwidth of input traffic. We also show that the dynamic MB method can urantee the CBP performance according to the service priority regardless of variation of input traffic parameters.

본 논문에서는 XGPON (10-Gigabit-capable passive optical network)을 기반으로 하는 TWDM (time and wave-division multiplexing) PON의 새로운 동적대역할당 알고리즘을 제안한다. 대부분의 TWDM PON은 EPON (Ethernet PON)을 기반으로 하여 동작하며 동적대역할당도 EPON의 동적대역할당 알고리즘을 변형시켜 사용한다. 본 논문에서는 XGPON의 동적대역할당 알고리즘을 개선하여 TWDM PON에 적합한 새로운 동적대역할당 알고리즘을 제안한다.

In this paper, we propose an ATM-LAN IWU(interworking unit) with threshold based dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme. We analyze a discrete-time based finite queueing model with deterministic service times in order to investigate the performance of the proposed scheme. It is known that the arrival process of IP packets is bursty. So we use an MMPP(Markov Modulated Poisson Process) to model the bursty input traffic. As performance measures, we obtain the packet loss probability and the mean packet delay. We present some numerical results to show the effects of the thresholds on the performance of the DBAS(dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme).

한 개의 PON 시스템을 이용하여 여러 종류의 서비스 흑은 여러 서비스 공급자를 수용할 수 있도록 하는 Multi-OLT PON 구조를 제시하였다. 또한 이런 PON 구조에 적합한 동작 프로토콜 및 동적 대역할당 기법에 대하여 설명하였다. 성능 분석을 통해 제안한 구조의 PON 시스템이 매우 효율적이며, 향후 초고속 PON 시스템에서 효과적으로 이용필 수 있음을 알 수 있었다.

본 논문에서는 XGPON1 (10-Gbps-capable passive optical network stage 1) 시스템에 사용 가능한 새로운 동적 polling 방법을 제안한다. XGPON1 시스템은 상향 2.5 Gbps, 하향 10 Gbps 속도를 지원한다. XGPON1 시스템에서는 polling 빈도가 높으면 동적대역할당의 효율이 증가하지만 상향대역폭이 낭비되는 문제가 발생된다. 제안된 polling 방법은 polling에 사용되는 상향 대역폭 낭비를 줄이고 동시에 polling 횟수를 효율적으로 향상시킨다.

가변 압축 미디어 특성을 갖는 비디오 서비스는 발생되는 프레임 단위의 트래픽의 유동성 때문에 대역폭 관리에 있어 많은 제약을 수반한다. 특히, MPEG 비디오와 같이 VBR(Variable Bit Rate) 트래픽 특성을 갖는 비디오에 대한 대역폭 관리는 프레임간의 심한 트래픽 변이 때문에 대역폭 활용 이득이 낮아진다. 또한, VOD(Video-On-Demand)와 같은 대화형 비디오 서비스에서 VCR 기능과 같은 대화형 서비스를 제공할 때의 트래픽 변화는 예측하기 힘들기 때문에 효과적인 대역폭 관리가 힘들다. 본 논문에서는 MPEG 비디오와 같이 VBR 트래픽 특성을 지닌 저장 미디어를 기반으로 하는 대화형 비디오 서비스를 위한 동적 대역폭 할당 방법을 제안한다. 이 방법은 선인출 기반의 가변구간 대역폭 할당 기법과 다수 스트림에 대한 동적 대역폭 관리를 통해 주어진 전체 대역폭의 활용율을 극대화시킨다. 또한, 제안하는 기법은 MPEG 스트림의 트래픽 특성을 반영한 대역폭 할당 방법을 적용하며, 다중 스트림에 대해 동적 대역폭 관리를 사용한 네트워크 자원 활용을 극대화시킬 수 있는 방법을 제공한다.
