This study presents a case study of condition evaluation of various asphalt pavement sections to estimate performance lives. The pavement surface conditions including cracking and rutting are first evaluated using a automatic pavement analyzer, ARAN. HPCI(Highway Pavement Condition Index) values are estimated using the pavement surface distress data. It is observed from the pavement distress survey that the major distress type of the sections is top-down cracking. The modulus value of each pavement layer is back-calculated from the defection data obtained from a FWD(Falling Weight Deflectometer) and compared with the laboratory measured dynamic modulus values. Remaining lives of the various pavement sections are estimated based on a mechanistic-empirical approach and AAHTO 1993 design guide. The structural capacities of the all pavement sections based on the two approaches are strong enough to maintain the pavement sections for the rest of design life. Since the major distress type is top-down cracking, the remaining lives of the pavement sections are estimated based on HPCI and existing performance database of highway pavements. To evaluate the causes of premature pavement distress, various material properties, such as air void, asphalt binder content, aggregate gradation, dynamic modulus and fatigue resistance, are measured from the field cores. It is impossible to accurately estimate the binder contents of field samples using the ignition method. It is concluded from the laboratory tests that the premature top down cracking is mainly due to insufficient compaction and inadequate aggregate gradation.
To mass-produce useful biopolymer films, chitosan/gelatin blend films were prepared by solution casting method. Effects of mixing ratio, tensile strength (TS), elongation (E) at break, total color difference (${\Dalta}E$), opacity, water vapor permeability (WVP), oxygen permeability (OP), and thermal properties on chitosan/gelatin blend films properties were investigated. TS, E, ${\Dalta}E$, opacity, WVP, and OP values were 58.24-22.01 MPa, 13.11-24.67%, 1.86-17.45, 0.3104-1.2161 nmO.D./${\mu}m$, $1.6875-1.7225ng{\cdot}m/m^{2}{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$, and $2.2380{\times}10^{-7}-2.2975{\times}10^{-7}\;mL{\cdot}{\mu}m/m^{2}{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$, respectively. TS of blend films decreased, while E, ${\Dalta}E$, and opacity increased with increasing chitosan content. WVP of blend films did not show any significant relationship with mixing ratio and thickness of blend films. Miscibility of films was examined over entire composition range by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). TGA results showed gelatin is more thermally stable than chitosan and some interactions among functional groups of two biopolymers. Glass transition temperature $(T_{2})$ of films as determined by DMA decreased with increasing content of chitosan in the blend. Results of thermal analysis indicate high miscibility among polymer components in the blend.
Compatability of films made of chitosan, gelatin, and their blends prepared by aqueous solution casting was investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA) and a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). TGA showed gelatin is more thermally stable than chitosan, and thermal stability of chitosan in blends was higher than that of pure chitosan due to interaction among functional groups of component polymers in blend. Glass transition temperature $(T_g)$ of blends was dependent on chitosan content of blends. Blend films exhibited good miscibility. Moisture and glycerol contents of blend strongly affected thermal properties of two component polymers.

Poly(amic acid)s were successfully synthesized from 1,4-bis(4-aminophenoxy)benzene (1,4-APB) or 2,2-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane (HFBAPP) with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 3,3'-4,4'-benzopenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) and $p$-phenylenediamine ($p$-PDA) and then they were effectively converted into polyimide films by thermal imidization. The chemical structure and thermo-mechanical properties of polyimide films were examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA), thermo-mechanical analyzer, dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and universal tensile machine (UTM). The moisture absorption, thermal and mechanical properties of polyimide films decreased with increasing the amount of 1,4-APB and HFBAPP. The polyimide films using HFBAPP showed lower properties than that of 1,4-APB at the same ratio, but it displayed better thermal properties and lower moisture absorption at the similar coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) with a copper. On the basis of our finding, it is concluded that 4-component polyimide films could be utilized for base films for flexible copper clad laminates (FCCL) of flexible printed circuit boards.

Various poly(amic acid)s were synthesized from PMDA/BPDA/p-PDA/ODA with different mole ratios and effectively converted into 4-component polyimide films by thermal imidization. The chemical structures and thermo-mechanical properties of polyimide films were examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA), thermo-mechanical analyzer (TMA), dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and universal tensile machine (UTM). The tensile strength, modulus, and thermal properties of polyimides films increased with the amount of rigid PMDA and p-PDA, while the elongation and moisture absorption of polyimide films increased with the amount of flexible BPDA and ODA. One of 4-component polyimide films exhibited a similar coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) value to that of copper when it was composed of PMDA : BPDA : p-PDA : ODA with the ratio of 5 : 5 : 4 : 6. Thus, this polyimide film could be useful for a base film for flexible copper clad laminates (FCCL) of flexible printed circuit boards.
Nanocomposites based on epoxy acid nanoclay were prepared employing organically modified mica type silicate (OMTS), diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) type epoxy. curing agent (dicyandiamide; DICY), and catalyst (benzyl dimethyl amine; BDMA). Both melt mixing and solution mixing were und for the sample preparation and structural developments with curing reaction were analyzed using X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Because of the different curing rate between extra-gallery and intra-gallery reactions of epoxy mixtures, only intercalated structure was observed for the sample prepared by melt mixing while fully exfoliated structure was observed for the sample prepared by solution mixing. Mechanical properties of exfoliated epoxy nanocomposite were investigated using a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). The dynamic storage modulus of the nanocomposite in both glass and rubbery plateau regions were increased with increasing OMTS contents, but glass transition temperatures ($T_g$) remained unchanged. Thermal properties of epoxy nanocomposite were investigated using thermogravimetric (TGA) and limit oxygen index (LOI) methods. Thermal decomposition onset points and LOI values were increased with increasing OMTS contents due to barrier effects of OMTS sheets.
Blend resin (PET/PETG 70/30 blend) of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly (ethylene terephthalate glycol) (PETG) of weight percent 70/30 was prepared by a twin-screw extruder. Undrawn films of the blend and pure PETG were made by melt-press in hot press. Drawn films were made by capillary rheometer. Crystallinity, shrinkage, thermal, dynamic mechanical, and mechanical properties of these blends and PETG drawn films were investigated by wide angle X-ray diffractometer, dry oven, DSC thermal analyzer, and tensile tester. The crystallinity and density of these films increased with increasing draw ratio and draw rate but decreased with increasing draw temperature. The crystallinity and density of the blend films were higher than those of PETG films. The tensile strength and tensile modulus of these drawn alms increased with increasing draw ratio and draw rate but decreased with increasing draw temperature. The tensile strength and tensile modulus of blend films were higher than those of PETG films. Shrinkage of PETG md blend films decreased with draw ratio and draw rate. Shrinkage of undrawn blend film was 600% higher than that of pure PET film.

Melt blend of PA6/PP-g-MA system containing SEBS-g-MA as a compatible impact modifier was prepared to investigate the change of mechanical properties and morphologies. The tensile strength slightly decreased, but the elongation at break increased with increasing content of SEBS-g-MA in the blend. Also the notched izod impact strength increased with increasing the content of PP-g-MA and SEBS-g-MA. It is attributed to improved compatibilization and interfacial adhesion by reaction of the amide of PA6 with maleic anhydride of SEBS-g-MA and PP-g-MA. The result of dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA) showed a typical behavior of the compatibilization in the polymer blends. Finally, in the phase structure observed by the use of SEM, we confirmed improvement of the compatibilization and interfacial adhesion with increasing the content of SEBS-g-MA and PP-g-MA.

This paper presents the effect of driving waveform for piezoelectric bend mode inkjet printhead with optimized mechanical design. Experimental and theoretical studies on the applied driving waveform versus jetting characteristics were performed. The inkjet head has been designed to maximize the droplet velocity, minimize voltage response of the actuator and optimize the firing frequency to eject ink droplet. The head design was carried out by using mechanical simulation. The printhead has been fabricated with Si(100) and SOI wafers by MEMS process and silicon direct bonding method. To investigate how performance of the piezoelectric ceramic actuator influences on droplet diameter and droplet velocity, the method of stroboscopy was used. Also we observed the movement characteristics of PZT actuator with LDV(Laser Doppler Vibrometer) system, oscilloscope and dynamic signal analyzer. Missing nozzles caused by bubbles in chamber were monitored by their resonance frequency. Using the water based ink of viscosity of 4.8 cps and surface tension of 0.025 N/m, it is possible to eject stable droplets up to 20 kHz, 4.4 m/s and above 8 pl at the different applied driving waveforms.
The effect of fuel injection spray on engine performance has been known as one of the major concerns for improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. In general, reducing the spray droplet size could prevent HC emission in gasoline engine. As far as PFI (Port Fuel Injection) gasoline engine is concerned, the mixture of air and fuel may not be uniform under a certain condition, because breakup and production of spray droplets are made in a short distance between the fuel injector and intake valve. This study, by constituting PFI gasoline spray system, was performed to study the transient spray characteristics and dynamic behavior of droplets from 2hole 2spray type injector used in DOHC gasoline engine. Mean droplet size and optical concentration in accordance with various conditions were measured by LDPA and CCD camera. Through this study, the variation of drop size and optical concentration could be used for understanding the behavior of unsteady spray was declared and the existing the small droplets between each pulse spray could be estimated caused to the development of wall film was conformed.
