  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the effects of Dansam and Sappan wood extract to perform combination dyeing on silk fabrics, with respect to color changes, fastness (washing, dry cleaning, perspiration, rubbing and light fastness), and functionality (antibacterial activity and deodorization). Combination dyeing was performed by first combining Dansam with Sappan wood, then Sappan wood with Dansam, in these orders. Given the changes in the combination ratio, pre-mordant treatment was performed. Looking at the surface colors of each dye, Dansam generally produces YR color series, while Sappan wood produces YR, R, and RP color series. The effects of changing the order in which combination dying was performed on the surface colors were as follows. First, combination dyeing (A) was performed by using Dansam before Sappan wood, to produce YR and R color series. Then combination dyeing (B) was performed by using Sappan wood before Dansam, to produce YR, R, and RP color series. By visual inspections, more similar color changes of the combination dyeing were noticed with the post-dyeing material rather than the pre-dyeing material. Therefore, it was presumably confirmed that surface color changes of combination dyeing were greatly influenced by the post-dyeing color. Individual dyeing tests for fastness showed that Dansam was comparatively superior to Sappan wood, which demonstrated lower fastness to washing, dry cleaning, perspiration, and light, relatively. The fastness of combination dyed samples was shown middle, but similar fastness to the post-dye material, The fastness of (B) method was higher than (A) method in the washing and light fastness. This confirms that color fastness from combination dyeing was considerably influenced by the post-dye material. It was found that all dyed samples had a very high bacterial reduction rate of 99.9% and high deodorization rate of 95%.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the effects of persimmon juice and hibiscus flowers extract to perform combination dyeing of silk fabrics, with respect to color changes, fastness, and functionality. The optimal conditions as a result, were shown at 100% of dye concentration, $40^{\circ}C$ of dyeing temperature and 30 minutes of dyeing time while in terms of dye uptake depending on the kind of mordants and methods. The highest K/S value was recorded at pH 3, pre-mordants of $CuSO_4$, and $SnCl_2$, post-mordanting. After repeated dyeing and post-mordanting, various color change occurred with mordant treatments. Color fastness of dyed fabrics with hibiscus flowers extract was improve considerably by combination dyeing with persimmon juice extract. In aspects of functional properties, it showed excellent results of 99% deodorization rate, 99.9% Staphylococcus aureus rate and 99.9% Klebsiella pneumoniae.

  • In this article, effect of the dyeing and mechanical properties were investigated on the polyester ultramicro fiber(UMF) and knitted fabric varying fiber fineness(0.01d and 0.05d). By a treatment with NaOH solution, sea-ingredient was removed and polyester micro-fiber was revealed. The dyeing, build-up and fastness properties of the fiber and fabrics were observed. We used C.I. Disperse Red 60 and Blue 56 for dyeing property and eight Lumacron dyes for build-up property and colorfastness. At low temperature dyeing($100^{\circ}C$), the dyeing rate of 0.01d-polyester UME increased more than that of 0.05d-polyester UMF with Disperse Red 60 and Blue 56 whereas dyeing rate of 0.05d-polyester UMF were increased more than that of 0.01d-polyester UMF at high temperature($120^{\circ}C$), The colorfastnesses of the 0.05d-fiber knitted fabric such as washing, rubbing and light was higher than those of the 0.01d-fiber knitted fabric.

  • Cotton fiber and NaOH-mercerized cotton fiber had been treated by liquid ammonia and were dyed with two direct dyes, C.I. Direct Red 2 and Blue 1. The effect of the treatment on the rate of dyeing, dye adsorption isotherm, and affinity were studied. The rate of dyeing was increased in the order of NaOH-mercerized> NaOH/liquid ammonia-treated > liquid ammonia-treated>Untreated cotton irrespective of kind of dyes. The rate of dyeing for NaOH-treated fiber considerably increased, whereas liquid ammonia-treated or NaOH/liquid ammonia-treated did not because the structural transformation was not enough for the dyes to penetrate easily into the liquied ammonia-treated cottons. The time of half-dyeing was considerably reduced by mercerizing with NaOH, but lengthened by liquid ammonia treatment because of increased equilibrium dye exhaustion especially in dyeing with C.I. Dierect Red 2. In spite of a short time of the ammonia treatment for 4 seconds, the equilibrium exhaustions of both of direct dyes, C.I. Direct Red 2 and C.I. Direct Blue 1, were increased in proportion to internal volume of treated cotton under a condition of fixed affinity.

  • This study examined the pretreatment effect, appropriate dyeing conditions, color fastness and functionality of cotton fabrics dyed with Zizania latifolia Turcz. Dye uptake was substantially increased by pretreatment and chitosan pretreatment was much more effective than tannic acid pretreatment. Optimal dyeing conditions were colorant concentration of 100%, dyeing temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, dyeing time of 80 minutes and dyebath pH of 5.5. Color fastness of chitosan pretreatment and dyed cotton to washing, rubbing, perspiration and light was 4, 5, 3-4(acidic), 3(alkaline) and 3 respectively. Color fastness of tannic acid pretreatment and dyed cotton to washing, rubbing, perspiration and light was 4, 5, 3-4(acidic), 4-5(alkaline) and 4 respectively. Deodorization rates of ammonia(NH3) were 99.9% in both cases. UV protection rate were 98.3% of UV-A and 98.5% of UV-B in case of chitosan pretreatment. UV protection rate were 98.2% of UV-A and 98.5% of UV-B in case of tannic acid pretreatment. UV protection factor(UPF) was 50+ in both cases. Reduction rate of Staphyloccus aureus were 99.9% in both cases. Therefore Zizania latifolia Turcz. could be used a new functional colorant.

  • This study was conducted to remove the color in dyeing wastewater by ozone oxidation process, and the results were summarized as follows ; The 18.3% of BOD and 56.3% TOC were removed as decreasing with pH 1 in dyeing wastewater, containing the polyester reducing process. It showed that terephthalic acid was precipitated at low pH. The color of dyeing wastewater was removed by the first order reaction, and the reaction rate constants at pH 3, 7, 12 were investigated $0.234{\;}min^{-1},{\;}0.215{\;}min^{-1}{\;}and{\;}0.201{\;}min^{-1}$ respectively. It showed that color was more effectively removed with direct reaction of ozone than radical reaction(non-direct reaction). As increasing of the water temperature, the reaction rate constants were increased slightly. It indicated that activity of ozone was improved at high water temperature.

  • In the prior study, the dyeing behaviors of Milling Cyanine 5R on silk fiber in aqueous dyeing liquor including small amount of organic compounds were investigated. The most effective compound was acetophenone which increased dye uptake as well as dyeing rate. In this study, the role of the acetophenone in dyeing of silk with Milling Cyanine 5R was studied. By addition of acetophenone into the dye solution, the molar absorptivity of Milling Cyanine 5R increased, and the wavelength of maximum absorption was shifted to longer wavelength, namely bathochromic shifted. This shows that the acetophenone prevents the dye to aggregate, and increases the number of monomeric dye molecule relative to the dye solution without acetophenone. This fact was also confirmed by the increase of the permeation rate of the dye through cellulose semipermeable membrane from the dye solution including the acetophenone. From these results, the acetophenone acts as a prohibitor of dye aggregation, increases the number of monomeric dye molecules even at relatively low temperature, and makes the dyes penetrate into the fiber easier.

  • The effect of organic solvent in the dyeing of silk fiber by acid dye was investigated. Acetophenone and benzyl alcohol were shown to be the most effective for the rate of dyeing of silk fiber by Milling Cyanine 5R (C.I. Acid Blue 113), a milling type acid dye, but, with benzyl alcohol, the equilibrium dye uptake was much lower than that in the absence of it. In the presence of solvent, maximum dye uptake shifted to lower temperature than 6$0^{\circ}C$, while without solvent, it was shown at about $60^\circ{C}$. When dyed by Orange II (C.I. acid Orange 7) under same condition equilibrium dye uptake of silk fiber was lower than that for milling type acid dye, and in the presence of benzyl alcohol, still much lower uptake resulted. All these fact reveals that organic solvents in the solvent-assisted dyeing of silk fiber broaden micelle spacings too much, resulting in increased rate of dyeing, and decreased equilibrium dye uptake, contrary to wool.

  • Dyeing properties of rosemary colorants on cotton fabrics were investigated. Effect of dyeing conditions on dye uptake and effect of mordanting and cationizing on dye uptake, color change and colorfastness were explored. Also, antimicrobial activity of rosemary colorants was ascertained and further effect of cationizing on antimicrobial activity was investigated. Affinity of rosemary colorants to cotton fiber was considerably low, and its isotherm adsorption curve was Freundlich type, indicating that hydrogen bonding was involved in the adsorption of rosemary colorants to cotton fiber. The cotton fabrics showed generally high colorfastness except fastness to washing and light. The cationized cotton with Cationon UK(quarterly ammonium salt) showed higher dye uptake and shorter dyeing time, compared with the untreated cotton. The cationized cotton showed good colorfastness to washing, perspiration and rubbing. Antimicrobial activity of rosemary colorfastness was confirmed. The cationized cotton itself showed high bacterial reduction rate. For cationized and dyed samples, as dye uptake increased, bacterial reduction rate was decreased slightly.

  • This study is fundamental research on how to be able to scientifically quantify and reproduce a natural dyeing procedure. By dyeing silk fabrics, the establishment of a reproducible dyeing method was sought. Juglans mandshurica has been known as one of the most widely used black vegetable dyes. Repetition conditions and combination dyeing were performed with Juglans mandshurica cortex, gallnut, clove, and Eclipta prostrata L. extracts to express a deep black color. Juglans mandshurica cortex, gallnut, clove, and Eclipta prostrata L. extracts were suitable for black coloration and showed a darker black color when combined with iron mordant. Specifically, Juglans mandshurica cortex and clove can be used for deep black coloring. Color fastness when washed or dry cleaned was found to be strong with a grade of 4-5 and fastness to light was rated at a 3-4. The grade of color change when exposed to rubbing and perspiration was good at a 4-5. In regards to functional property aspects, it showed excellent results with a 99% deodorization rate at 120 minutes of dyeing time, 97.1% UV protection rate, and 85.9% and 62.3% bacterial reduction against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae, respectively. Therefore, it is considered that the extract from the Juglans mandshurica cortex is of great value as an eco-friendly, natural dyestuff.
