  • This research was performed to identify physical properties of polysulfide epoxy polymer concrete for ultra-thin bridge deck pavement, and improve domestic applicability. With the optimum mix ratio determined from mixing experiments of polymer concretes, compressive, flexural, and bond strength were tested to identify its strength properties along with the freezing-thawing resistance test to evaluate its durability in harsh environments. As a result, the tested polymer concretes showed excellent performance in strength and deflection characteristic and all tested strength satisfied the criteria of American Concrete Institute. Moreover, it had better performance under variable temperatures comparing to other existing pavement materials. By the results of freezing-thawing resistance test and strength measurement for specimens underwent the freezing-thawing process, it can be judged that there is no such problem to the concrete's durability. In conclusion, the newly developed polymer concrete in this research has appropriate properties for use in ultra-thin pavement on bridge deck, and moreover it has superior applicability in comparison with former materials due to its improved temperature sensitivity.

  • Dam concrete for pumped storage power plants should have sufficient durability in repetitive wet and dry conditions and abrasion due to water level fluctuation and also in freezing and thawing resistance as well as permeability capacity. This study presents various experimental results to enhance the durability of face slab concrete in CFRD(concrete faced rockfill dam) by varying the fly ash substitution such as 0%, 15%, 20% and 25% and polypropylene such as 0%, 0.1%. The effect on durability of concrete corresponding to the increasing amount of fly ash and polypropylene was evaluated and the optimum quantity of fly ash and polypropylene substitution was recommended. The results show that 20% of fly ash substitution and 0% of polypropylene were found out to be an optimum quantity to achieve excellent performances in durability for face slab concrete in CFRD.

  • Recently, the interminable ozone depletion and the global warming concerns has led to construction industries to seek for construction materials which are eco-friendly. Regarding this, Geopolymer Concrete (GPC) is getting great interest from researchers and scientists, since it can operate by-product waste to replace cement which can lead to the reduction of greenhouse gas emission through its production. Also, compared to ordinary concrete, geopolymer concrete belongs improved mechanical and durability properties. In spite of its positive properties, the practical use of geopolymer concrete is currently limited. This is primarily owing to the scarce structural, design and application knowledge. This study investigates the Mechanical and Durability of Geopolymer Concrete Containing Fibers and Recycled Aggregate. Mixtures of elastoplastic fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete with partial replacement of recycled coarse aggregate in different proportions of 10, 20, 30, and 40% with natural aggregate were fabricated. On the other hand, geopolymer concrete of 100% natural aggregate was prepared as a control specimen. To consider both strength and durability properties and to evaluate the combined effect of recycled coarse aggregate and elastoplastic fiber, an elastoplastic fiber with the ratio of 0.4% and 0.8% were incorporated. The highest compressive strength achieved was 35 MPa when the incorporation of recycled aggregates was 10% with the inclusion of 0.4% elastoplastic fiber. From the result, it was noticed that incorporation of 10% recycled aggregate with 0.8% of the elastoplastic fiber is the perfect combination that can give a GPC having enhanced tensile strength. When specimens exposed to freezing-thawing condition, the physical appearance, compressive strength, weight loss, and ultrasonic pulse velocity of the samples was investigated. In general, all specimens tested performed resistance to freezing thawing. the obtained results indicated that combination of recycled aggregate and elastoplastic fiber up to some extent could be achieved a geopolymer concrete that can replace conventional concrete.

  • As recent buildings often use low-quality concrete materials, are constructed defectively, and are put in extreme environmental conditions, many of them show the shortening of life resulting from the corrosion of reinforcing rods by salt damage, carbonization, freezing and thawing, cracking. This in turn raises the cost of repair and maintenance, so it is required to extend the life of structures through enhancing the durability of concrete. In response to the demand, researches on high-durability concrete are being made actively focused on the maximum water-cement ratio, the maximum unit quantity, the minimum cover thickness, the addition of mineral admixtures, etc. With this background, the present study examined the basic physical properties of concrete containing admixtures for enhancing the durability of concrete.

  • PURPOSES : This study aims to develop a repair material that can enhance pavement performance, inducing rapid traffic opening through early strength development and fast setting time by utilizing MgO-based patching materials for repairing road pavements. METHODS : To consider the applicability of MgO-based patching materials for repairing domestic road pavements, first, strength development and setting time of the materials were evaluated, based on MgO to $KH_2PO_4$ ratio, water to binder ratio, and addition ratio of retarder (Borax), by which the optimal mixture ratio of the developed material was obtained. To validate the performance of the developed material as a repair material, the strength(compressive strength and bonding strength) and durability (freezing, thawing, and chloride ion penetration resistance) was checked through testing, and its applicability was evaluated. RESULTS : The results showed that when an MgO-based patching material was used, the condensation time was reduced by 80%, and the compressive strength was enhanced by approximately 300%, as compared to existing cement-based repair materials. In addition, it was observed that the strength (compressive strength and bonding strength) and durability (freezing and thawing, and chloride ion penetration resistance) showed an excellent performance that satisfied the regulations. CONCLUSIONS : The results imply that an emergent repair/restoration could be covered by a rapid-hardening cement to meet the traffic limitation (i.e. the traffic restriction is only several hours for repair treatment). Furthermore, MgO-based patching materials can improve bonding strength and durability compared to existing repair materials.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the durability performance of polymer modified cement composites for repair of concrete under combined aging conditions. The experimental procedure was divided into three parts. First, the replacement level of mineral admixtures in polymer modified cement composites were determined in an experimental study based on a Box Behnken design. Second, the flow value, compressive strength and chloride permeability test of sixteen types of mixtures were conducted. Test results show that the polymer modified cement composites were effected on the improvement of the compressive strength and permeability performance. Third, the effects on the replacement level of silica fume mixture was evaluated by the compressive strength, chloride permeability, chemical resistance and repeated freezing and thawing cycles test. They demonstrated that the polymer modified cement composites using mixture of silica fume, fly ash, and blast furnace slag improved the durability performance.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate durability of high-strength light-weight aggregate concretes which are increasingly demanded recently. Two different artificial light-weight aggregates were used and two levels of high-strength concretes were made using w/c of 33% and 37% for target strength of 500kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 400kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. Cylinder specimens($\phi$=10cm and h=20cm) were made and treated with freezing-and-thawing(F/T) cycle at $-18^{\cire}C$ and $4^{\cire}C$. Dynamic modulus of elasticity and surface condition were evaluated with F/T cycle increase. The results showed that durability of the light-weight aggregate concretes was worse than that of conventional concrete, and the light-weight high-strength concrete with w/c=37% had the better durability than the one with w/c=33%.
