  • In this paper, we developed a workload index for monitoring the durability test using operation information of an excavator. First, the acceleration and cylinder pressure were selected as load factors by analyzing operation data. Through load correlation analysis according to each load factor, Root Mean Square (RMS) and Work Load Range (WLR) were respectively derived as a load feature representing mechanical load. In addition, the workload index was used to quantify load features. For applying the workload index to monitoring, a real-time monitoring system consisting of sensors and embedded controller was installed on the excavator and the system was integrated with a remote monitoring environment using a wireless network. Results of load monitoring and analysis verified that the developed workload index was effective from the viewpoint of the relative comparison of the workload.

  • As a detailed process for the development of new wooden furniture design that is to be used in elderly group homes, this study measured and analyzed physical and visual durability of joint techniques, one of the essential manufacturing techniques. By selecting a total of 4 joint techniques, an experiment to measure a compressive strength was conducted and targeting a group of 50 elderly people, a survey on visual durability and preference of visual aesthetics was carried on. As a result of closely analyzing the experiment of measuring compressive strength and the preference survey, 'mitre joint technique' was found to be the most suitable in manufacturing wooden furniture and through follow-up studies, the result of this study will be applied in the development of wooden furniture design for elderly group homes.

  • Utilization of supplementary cementing materials (SCM) by the cement industry, as a highly promising solution of sustainable cement development aiming to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, necessitates a more thorough evaluation of these types of materials on concrete durability. In this study a comparative assessment of the effect of SCM on concrete durability, of every cement type as defined in the European Standard EN 197-1 is taking place, using a software tool, based on proven predictive models (according to performance-related methods for assessing durability) developed and wide-validated for the estimation of concrete service life when designing for durability under harsh environments. The effect of Type II additives (fly ash, silica fume) on CEM I type of cement, as well as the effect of every Portland-composite type of cement (and others) are evaluated in terms of their performance in carbonation and chloride exposure, for a service life of 50 years. The main aim is to portray a unified and comprehensive evaluation of the efficiency of SCM in order to create the basis for future consideration of more types of cement to enter the production line in industry.

  • In the resent years, the early evaluation of concrete quality, construction and maintenance has been considered as all is of major concern due to the increase of loading and the degradation of structures related with time. This paper presents evaluation of structural safety performance using measured data of construction, on the basis of a field measurements for the prevention of unreliable concrete works. Measurements analyzed in this paper are early quality condition and performance assessment, serviceability performance by cracks and deflection, rating performance by loading, durability performance by chloride attack and carbonation. Thus, a quantitative assessment model of resistance capacity was developed here to meet the requirement for deteriorated concrete structures. The model focuses on damage mechanical of concrete structures deteriorated by initial damage factors for concrete quality and environment factors such as chloride and carbonation attacks. These results could provide useful information for concrete structures interested in design, construction and maintenance.

  • Since the opening of the Shin-Kori #1,2 in 2005, fly ash mixed concrete has been used for NPP concrete structures under construction in Korea with the aim of preventing aging and improving durability. In this paper, the quality suitability of fly ash manufactured in Korea is assessed and the basic physical properties of fly ash mixed concrete and its durability against primary causes of aging are verified through experimental methods. Because of the internal structure filling effect from the pozzolanic reaction of fly ash and the resulting improvements in mechanical performance in such areas as strength and salt damage resistance, the durability of fly ash mixed concrete is shown to be superior. It is judged that this result can be applied in measures not only for improving the safety of NPP structures in operation in Korea but also for implementing effective structure life management should extending the life of structures be needed in the future.

  • Many methods of spot weld modeling have been developed to increase efficiency and guarantee the robustness fer the CAE analysis. In this research they are introduced and the performance is compared in a viewpoint of stiffness and durability. For evaluating the performance a multi-spot welded specimen as well as two single welded specimen is used. The results show that the CWELD element considering 'patch to patch' is stiffer than other modeling methods in stiffness and more conservative in durability. It also offers simple modeling and since it is much easier to maintain the orrhogonality of the BAR element expressing a nugget, we can obtain more exact reaction forces and moments in a nugget. Therefore the CWELD element is the most excellent in the assessment of durability.

  • The Housing Act amended allows vertical extension up to three floors and increases the units of housing (or total floor area) to site up to 15%. Currently, the feasibility of performing vertical extension is evaluated based on safety diagnosis provisions and manuals with preliminary investigations on slope, uneven settlement, load-bearing capacity, and durability. However, a need for more reasonable evaluation methodology for the preliminary investigation is still required because the current procedures are borrowed from safety diagnosis provisions and manuals for reconstruction without detailed examinations on evaluation criteria and sampling methods. Accordingly, this study is intended to suggest a method to obtain feasible sampling size for durability assessment by statistically analyzing the safety evaluation data sets on concrete carbonation and steel corrosion obtained from apartment complexes. The results of this study are expected to be beneficial for establishing more reasonable field sampling size, and in turn, more reliable durability assessment protocol for vertical extension.

  • In this study, a basic durability assessment was performed by selecting the main part of a trial product of a shale shaker, which is one of components for a mud circular system. For a preliminary durability assessment, it was assumed that the lifetime of the bearing for the vibrator motor and the stiffness of the support spring are affected by the vibration when the motor operates continuously. In the case of the motor, the initial p-p level was 0.72 g, but after 100 hours of operation, the p-p level was rapidly increased to 1.26 g. Bearing defects could be estimated through ball defect frequency analysis. In the case of the spring, the stiffness of the spring was reduced by approximately 3.78% at the end of 2,000 hours of the fatigue-durability test by applying excitation conditions to shale shaker body. In the future, we will analyze the influence of the particle removal efficiency of the shale shaker.
