The degradation of a boiler header constructed by a material, 1Cr-0.5Mo steel in a fossil power plant is observed when the header is exposed for a long period to the high temperature and pressure. The present investigations are for evaluating the effect of the degradation on the material, such as its strength changes. Reheat-treated metal is used to compare the mechanical properties of the degraded and that of reheat-treated materials. Through the investigation, following results are obtained 1) the area ratio of ferrite in the reheat-treated material is larger than that of the degraded material, 2) the hardness and tensile strength of the degraded material are lower than that of the reheat-treated material, 3) the ductile-brittle transition temperature(DBTT) increased toward high temperature region, 4) the fatigue crack growth rate(FCGR) of the degraded material is higher than that of the reheat-treated material in the region of low ΔK value while FCGR of the both materials are similar in high ΔK region.
A bulk amorphous NiTiZrSiSn powder produced using an inert gas atomization was sprayed by kinetic spraying process that is basically a solid-state deposition process onto a mild steel substrate. They were successfully overlaid onto the mild steel substrate. In order to evaluate the tribological behavior of the kinetic sprayed NiTiZrSiSn BMG (Bulk Metallic Glass) coatings, a partially crystallized coating and a fully crystallized coating were prepared by the isothermal heat treatments. Tribological behaviors were investigated in view of friction coefficient, hardness and amorphous phase fraction of coating layer. Surface morphologies and depth in the wear tracks were observed and measured by scanning electron microscope and alpha-step. From the examination of the scratch wear track microstructure, transition from the ductile like deformation (micro cutting) to the brittle deformation (micro fracturing) in the scratch groove was observed with the increase of the crystallinity.

A main oxidizer shutoff valve controls the supply of the oxidizer flow into the combustion chamber of a liquid rocket engine. This shutoff valve also carries out the pre-chilling of oxidizer supply lines by permitting recycling flow for stable transient start of the engine. In the present paper, the flow tests for the recycling line of the valve were conducted in order to evaluate the cooling performance of the main oxidizer shutoff valve. In addition, cryogenic life-cycle tests were performed with an assumption of the increase of spring constant with increasing valve operating times due to ductile-brittle transition effects.
In this paper, the CLAM steel strengthened by micro-scale Y-Zr-O was prepared by vacuum induction melting followed by electroslag remelting (VIM-ESR). Yttrium (Y) and zirconium (Zr) were easy to aggregates into massive yttrium-zirconium-rich inclusions in the steel melted by vacuum induction melting (VIM), which would interrupt the continuity of the matrix and reduce the mechanical properties of steel. Micron-sized Y-Zr-O inclusions would be produced with the removal of original blocky Y-Zr-rich inclusions and the submicron-sized inclusions smaller than $0.2{\mu}m$ could be retained in the steel. The small grain size and the better refinement and distribution uniformity of Y-Zr-O inclusions after remelting would be responsible for the better yield strength and toughness. For VIM-ESR alloy, the ultimate tensile strength is 749 MPa and the yield strength is 642 MPa at room temperature, meanwhile they are 391 MPa and 367 MPa at $600^{\circ}C$, respectively. Meanwhile, the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) reduced from $-43^{\circ}C$ (VIM) to $-76^{\circ}C$ (VIM-ESR).
The effect of C, Mn, and Al additions on the tensile and Charpy impact properties of austenitic high-manganese steels for cryogenic applications is investigated in terms of the deformation mechanism dependent on stacking fault energy and austenite stability. The addition of the alloying elements usually increases the stacking fault energy, which is calculated using a modified thermodynamic model. Although the yield strength of austenitic high-manganese steels is increased by the addition of the alloying elements, the tensile strength is significantly affected by the deformation mechanism associated with stacking fault energy because of grain size refinement caused by deformation twinning and mobile dislocations generated during deformation-induced martensite transformation. None of the austenitic high-manganese steels exhibit clear ductile-brittle transition behavior, but their absorbed energy gradually decreases with lowering test temperature, regardless of the alloying elements. However, the combined addition of Mn and Al to the austenitic high-manganese steels suppresses the decrease in absorbed energy with a decreasing temperature by enhancing austenite stability.

A series of simulated reactivity-initiated accident (RIA) tests on irradiated fully recrystallized boiling water reactor Zircaloy-2 cladding has been performed by means of the expansion-due-to-compression (EDC) test method. The EDC method reproduces fuel pellet-clad mechanical interaction (PCMI) conditions for the cladding during RIA transients with respect to temperature and loading rates by out-of-pile mechanical testing. The tested materials had a large variation in burnup and hydrogen content (up to 907 wppm). The results of the EDC tests showed variation in the PCMI resistance of claddings with similar burnup and hydrogen content, making it difficult to clearly identify ductile-to-brittle transition temperatures. The EDC-tested samples of the present and previous work were investigated by light optical and scanning electron microscopy to study the influence of factors such as azimuthal variation of the Zr-hydrides and the presence of hydride rims and radially oriented hydrides. Two main characteristics were identified in samples with low ductility with respect to hydrogen content and test temperature: hydride rims and radial hydrides at the cladding outer surface. Crack propagation and failure modes were also studied, showing two general modes of crack propagation depending on distribution and amount of radially oriented hydrides. It was concluded that the PCMI resistance of irradiated cladding under normal conditions with homogenously distributed circumferential hydrides is high, with good margin to the RIA failure limits. To further improve safety, focus should be on conditions causing nonfavorable hydride distribution, such as hydride reorientation and formation of hydride blisters at the cladding outer surface.
Phenolic resin used as a precursor of carbonized matrix for carbon-carbon composites was modified by addition of molybdenum disilicide (MoSi$_2$) in various concentrations of 0, 4, 12 and 20% by weight to improve the anti-oxidation properties of the composites. The green body was manufactured by a prepreg method and was submitted to carbonization up to 110$0^{\circ}C$. In this work, the oxidation behavior of carbon-carbon composites with MoSi$_2$ as an oxidation inhibitor was investigated at the temperature range of 600-100$0^{\circ}C$ in an air environment. The carbon-carbon composites with MoSi$_2$ showed a significantly improved oxidation resistance due to both the reduction of the porosity formation and the formation of mobile diffusion barrier for oxygen when compared to those without MoSi$_2$. Carbon active sites should be blocked, decreasing the oxidation rate of carbon. This is probably due to the effect of the inherent MoSi$_2$ properties, resulted from a formation of the protective layer against oxygen attack in the composites studied.

It has been reported that high temperature structural components represent the phenomenon of material degradation according to a long term service under high temperature and pressure. Especially, fossile power plant components using the fossil fuel and heavy oil are affected by dewpoint corrosion of $H_2SO_4$produced during a combustion. Therefore, the service materials subjected to high temperature and pressure may occur the stress corrosion cracking. The object of this paper is to investigate SCC susceptibility according to the material degradation of the high temperature structural materials in dewpoint corrosive environment-$H_2SO_4$.The obtained results are summarized as follows : 1) In case of secondary superheater tube, the fractograph of dimple is observed at the concentration of $H_2SO_4$-5%. When the concentration of $H_2SO_4$ is above 10%, the fracture mode is shifted from a transgranular fracture to an quasi-intergranular fracture according to the increment of concentration. 2) In the relationship between [$\Delta$DBTT]$_sp$ and SCC susceptibility, it is confirmed that the greater material degradation degree is, the higher SCC susceptibility is. In addition, it can be known that SP test is useful test method to evaluate SCC susceptibility for high temperature structural components. 3) When [$\Delta$DBTT]$_sp$ is above 17$17^{\circ}C$ the SCC fracture behavior is definitely observed with SCC susceptibility of above 0.4.
Application of a stronger and more durable material for reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) might be an effective way to insure the integrity and increase the efficiency of nuclear power plants. A series of research projects to apply the SA508 Gr.4 steel in ASME code to RPVs are in progress because of its excellent strength and durability compared to commercial RPV steel (SA508 Gr.3 steel). In this study, the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of SA508 Gr.3 Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel and SA508 Gr.4N Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel were investigated. The differences in the stable phases between these two low alloy steels were evaluated by means of a thermodynamic calculation using ThermoCalc. They were then compared to microstructural features and correlated with mechanical properties. Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel shows the upper bainite structure that has coarse cementite in the lath boundaries. However, Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel shows the mixture of lower bainite and tempered martensite structure that homogeneously precipitates the small carbides such as $M_{23}C_6$ and $M_7C_3$ due to an increase of hardenability and Cr addition. In the mechanical properties, Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel has higher strength and toughness than Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel. Ni and Cr additions increase the strength by solid solution hardening. In addition, microstructural changes from upper bainite to tempered martensite improve the strength of the low alloy steel by grain refining effect, and the changes in the precipitation behavior by Cr addition improve the ductile-brittle transition behavior along with a toughening effect of Ni addition.
The grain boundary etching method as a technique for assessing degradation of structural materials used at elevated temperature has received much attention since it is simple, inexpensive and easy to apply to real plant components. In this study, the technique is applied to some aged petroleum and chemical plant components such as reactors and drums. As a degradation parameter, intersection number ratio ($N_i/N_o$), is employed. The intersection number ratio ($N_i/N_o$) is defined as the ratio of intersection number ($N_i$) obtained from 5-minute picric acid etched surface to the number ($N_o$) obtained from Nital etched surface. In order to study degradation level, several relationships were measured such as the correlation between shift in ductile brittle transition temperature, $({\Delta}DBTT)_{sp}$ and intersection number ratio, ($N_i/N_o$) and the correlation between the measured ($N_i/N_o$) values and Larson-Miller Parameter values.
