  • A facile one-pot synthesis of p-aminobenzoic acid from methyl 4-formylbenzoate which is a main by product in dimethyl terephthalate production process has been developed. This process involves the formation of amide intermediate obtained from the reaction of an aldehyde in methyl 4-formylbenzoate with chlorine in methylene chloride and the subsequent treatment of acid chloride with ammonia. The resulting amide was converted into amine using Hofmann degradation to afford a p-aminobenzoic acid. This facile one-pot process does not involve any expensive materials and should offer an attractive alternative to p-aminobenzoic acid production.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the performance of crossbreed Korean native ducks for production of Korean native commercial ducks which are adapted to Korean environment. A total of four hundred eighty ducklings (1-d-old) of crossbreds from A and B lines (derived from National Institute of Animal Science) were used in this work and divided into 8 treatments (4 replicates/group, 15 birds/replicate) with $4{\times}2$ factors (4 groups, AA, AB, BB, BA; 2 genders, male and female). Ducks were fed diets based on corn-soybean meal for 0 to 3 wk (22.0% [CP], 2,904 kcal/kg [ME]) and 3 to 8 wk (18.0% [CP], 3,002 kcal/kg [ME]). Body weight of AA group was higher than BB and BA groups (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference on body weight at 8 wk old. Body weight gain of AB group was the highest among groups (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference on body weight gain among crossbreds at 0~3, 3~8 and 0~8 wk old. On body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio, male was higher than female at the age of 3 and 8 wk old (P<0.05, P<0.01). There was no significant difference on uniformity and livability. However, production index of male was higher than that of female (P<0.01). These results may provide the basic data on growing performance and productivity of crossbreed Korean native ducks for the production of commercial Korean native duck.

  • The Oxic-Settling-Anaerobic(OSA) process is a modified activated sludge processes for sludge reduction. It is evaluated that the sludge production in OSA process can decrease to 88% because of biomass decay and kinetic parameter($Y_H$ 0.237mgVSS/mgCOD, $b_H$ $0.195d^{-1}$) in anaerobic reactor, when compared with CAS process. However, it has problems caused by sludge reduction such as increase of nutrient loading. In case that the anoxic condition through the introduction of the intermittent aeration for the enhancement of nitrogen removal ability build up and enough rbCOD is suppled, maximum 88% of nitrogen is removed in the OSA process. If the OSA process optimizing the intermittent aeration cycle is applied to the separate sewage system with high rbCOD fraction, it can be converted to advanced process in terms of the sludge reduction and nitrogen removal, simultaneously.

  • Exergetic and thermoeconomic analyses were performed fer a 137-MW steam power plant. In these analyses, mass and energy conservation laws were applied to each component of the system. Quantitative balance of the exergy and exergetic cost for each component, and for the whole system was carefully considered. The exergo-economic model, which represented the productive structure of the system was used to visualize the cost formation process and the productive interaction between components. The computer program developed in this study can determine production costs of power plants, such as gas-and steam-turbines plants and gas-turbine cogeneration plants. The program can also be used to study plant characteristics, namely, thermodynamic performance and sensitivity to changes in process and/or component design variables.

  • The combustion characteristics of car components have been investigated, The combustion parameters like heat release rate, smoke production, yield of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide and mass loss rate were analyzed by cone-calorimeter for representative samples (seat, carpet, headrest, rubber mat, dash board and electric wire) collected from a used car. The results from sample combustion showed that cover and sponge in seat more quickly ignited and flamed than other parts. The heat released from the combustion of dash board sample was 144.29$kw/m^2$ and the smoke produced by the wire combustion was 6896.4 $m^2/m^2$. The yields of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide were in the ranges of 1.09${\sim}$2.76 kg/kg and 0.0262${\sim}$0.1008 kg/kg, respectively.

  • Organic agriculture at Hongdong began with the conscious efforts of farmers who were influenced by Japanese experience and the environmental degradation by conventional agriculture in the mid-1970s. Based on their strong conviction, even though the lack of organic technique and information, those farmers started to implement organic agriculture which was beyond the production increase policy at that time. The solidarity among farmers could establish the foundation of organic agriculture through undergoing trial and error. Substantively interchange and communication between farmers and consumers played a prominent role to strengthen the organic agriculture at Hongdong as well.

  • Effect of cross-section libraries on displacements per atom (dpa) was investigated under the spectrum which is calculated in the outer and inner of capsule in the JMTR fuel region. The variation of dpa value of iron was calculated by TENJIN2 code using several cross section libraries (ENDFB-lV, JENDL 3.1 and JENDL 3.2). The dependency of input spectrum on total damage (dpa) is more clearly appeared in case or ENDFB-IV in JENDL 3.2 and JENDL 3.1 libraries. The gas production rate calculated by ENDFB-IV library showed slightly larger value than that by JENDL library, and it responded more sensitively in neutron spectrum.
