A broad dual-band terahertz metamaterial filter with sharp out-of-band rejections is designed and demonstrated. The center frequencies of the first and the second bands occur at 0.35 THz and 0.96 THz with 3 dB relative bandwidth of 31% and 17%, respectively. Results are measured using a THz time-domain spectroscopy system that shows agreement with simulations. Physical mechanisms of the broad dual-band resonance are clarified based on transmissions of different structures and surface current density distributions. Influence of structure parameters on the transmission characteristics are discussed. Symmetry of the structure ensures the filter polarization independence at normal incidence. These results supported by the design of the filter could find applications in broad multi-band sensors, terahertz communication systems, and other emerging terahertz technologies.

In this paper, we performed the comparisons between polarization diversity using dual polarization antennal which has $\pm45^{\circ}$slanted linear polarization characteristics and conventional space diversity in rural and residential areas. The analysis was done by evaluating the diversity gain improvement and cross correlation coefficients between two received signals through each diversity branch. From the results, we could confirmed that space diversity has bigger diversity gain than polarization diversity by 1~2 dB, and there is a little difference of $\pm0.1$ in cross correlation coefficients by analyzing CDF under portable mobile phone environments.

To effectively remove chaff echoes, which are often misidentified as precipitation echoes on weather radars, this study examines the relationship between the radar reflectivity and each of dual polarimetric parameters. The dual polarimetric parameters are collected only for the echo areas identified as chaff echoes on the NIMR X-band dual polarization radar. Overall, the polarimetric parameters (i.e., reflectivity, differential reflectivity, cross correlation coefficient, standard deviation of differential reflectivity and specific differential phase) for chaff echoes have a wider range of values than those for precipitation echoes and the chaff filaments tend to be horizontally oriented to radar beams. There appears to be a considerable overlap in the cross correlation coefficient range of chaff and precipitation echoes since some precipitation echoes have cross correlation coefficient lower than 0.8. Therefore, although the cross correlation coefficient is known to be a good variable in identifying and separating chaff echoes from precipitation echoes, it is suggested that additional care should be taken when using the cross correlation coefficient solely in removing chaff echoes.

In this paper, We designed a waveguide-type feed structure that converts millimeter wave dual-polarized signals into monopulse signals and presented a manufacturing method. At millimeter-wave such as the W band, the size of the waveguide is very small, making it very difficult to manufacture complex structures. Therefore, because manufacturability is important for the waveguide-type feed structure in the millimeter-wave, electro forming and diffusion bonding were proposed and verified in this study. The designed monopulse feed structure consists of eight 180° hybrids that combine 90° hybrids and self-compensating phase shifters, and four OMTs to separate dual polarization. The designed feed structure was designed to facilitate electro forming and diffusion bonding, and the manufactured feed structure was verified through a network analyzer. It was confirmed that the two proposed production methods produce a monopulse signal well through the measured magnitude and phase of the port.

In this paper we propose a wavelength-switchable fiber ring laser that employs a polarization-dependent fiber band stop filter. The fiber filter was fabricated by inscribing a long-period fiber grating on a high birefringent fiber. Dual-wavelength switching operation was accomplished by controlling the rotatable linear polarizer which rotated the polarization plane of the light circulating through the fiber laser cavity. The amplitude variation of both laser lines was measured to be less than 0.5 dB and the signal-to-amplified spontaneous emission ratio was more than 55 dB.

A circularly rotated array for a dual polarized applicator in a superficial hyperthermia system is proposed. The applicator has a wider effective treatment area due to the $180^{\circ}$ phase shift. The dual polarized circularly rotated array (DPCRA) suppresses overheating at the center of the array and helps evenly distribute the heat. This array provides a more effective treatment area than a lattice array when a $2{\times}2$ dual polarized array is fitted to the treatment area. The treatment area is 71.5% of the aperture, whereas the effective treatment areas of the $2{\times}2$ dual polarized lattice array (DPLA) and the single polarized array (SPA) are 57.2% and 38.6% of the same aperture, respectively. The measurement matches the simulation results without blood circulation effects. In a $2{\times}2$ array applicator, the proposed DPCRA has more heat uniformity than the DLA and the SPA.
We report the first detection of linearly polarized emission at an observing wavelength of 350 mum from the radio-loud active galactic nucleus 3C 279. We conducted polarization observations for 3C 279 using the SHARP polarimeter in the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory on 2014 March 13 and 14. For the first time, we detected the linear polarization with the degree of polarization of $13.3%{\pm}3.4%$ (3.9sigma) and the electric vector position angle (EVPA) of $34.^{\circ}7{\pm}5.^{\circ}6$. We also observed 3C 279 simultaneously at 13, 7, and 3.5 mm in dual polarization with the Korean very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) Network on 2014 March 6 (single dish) and imaged in milliarcsecond (mas) scales at 13, 7, 3.5, and 2.3 mm on March 22 (VLBI). We found that the degree of linear polarization increases from 10% to 13% at 13 mm to 350 mum and the EVPAs at all observing frequencies are parallel within < $10^{\circ}$ to the direction of the jet at mas scale, implying that the integrated magnetic fields are perpendicular to the jet in the innermost regions. We also found that the Faraday rotation measures RM are in a range of $-6.5{\times}102{\sim}-2.7{\times}103$ rad m-2 between 13 and 3.5 mm, and are scaled as a function of wavelength:| {RM}| ${\backslash}propto$ {lambda }-2.2. These results indicate that the millimeter and sub-millimeter polarization emission are generated in the compact jet within 1 mas scale and affected by a Faraday screen in or in the close proximity of the jet.

In this paper, we propose a method for recognizing ground target using dual polarization channels in millimeter waveband air-to-surface radar. First, the Push-Broom target detection method is described and the received signal is modeled considering flight-path scenario of air-to-surface radar. The scattering centers were extracted using the RELAX algorithm, which is a time domain spectral estimation technique, and the feature vector of the target was generated. Based on this, a DB for 4 targets is constructed. As a result of the proposed method, it is confirmed that the target classification rates is improved by more than 15% than the single channel using the data of the dual polarization channel.

In this paper, we considered a design method for a microstrip patch antenna fed through two radiating edges by two feeding microstrip lines. Two feedlines are made to have a phase difference of 180 degree with each other in order to reduce cross-polarization level radiated from the antenna. The operation principle and design procedure for the considered antenna are explained using equivalent circuits. In order to check the validity of this study, the results for reflection coefficients of the antenna obtained by the proposed equivalent circuit method and the simulation using commercial antenna design tool are compared with each other.

We have numerically implemented a receiver side all-optical signal processing method, i.e. optical backward propagation (OBP), by dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) and non-linear compensator (NLC) devised by effective negative Kerr non-linear coefficient using two highly non-linear fibers (HNLFs). The method is implemented for the post-processing of fiber transmission impairments, i.e. chromatic dispersion (CD) and non-linearities (NL). The OBP module is evaluated for dual-polarization (DP) m-ary (m=4,16,32,64,256) quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) in 112 Gbit/s coherent transmission over 1200 km standard single mode fiber (SMF). We have also investigated an intensity limited optical backward propagation module (IL-OBP) by using a self-phase modulation-based optical limiter with an appropriate pre-chirping to compensate for the intensity fluctuations in the transmission link. Our results show that in highly non-linear sensitive 256QAM transmission, we have observed a 66% increase in the transmission distance by implementing IL-OBP as compared to conventional OBP.
