  • In this paper, propagation characteristics of W-type single mode fiber with dual shape core is investigeted theoretically. Design parameters of DSC(dual shape core) W-type single mode fiber with very low dispersion over a wide wavelength range are computed using scalar approximation. The results have larger core radius and stronger confinement for mode field distribution in core than conventional W-type fiber with single shape core.

  • This paper describes a Dual Buck Converter with mode control using variable Frequency to Voltage for portable devices requiring wide load current. The inherent problems of PLL compensation and efficiency degradation in light load current that the conventional hysteretic buck converter has faced have been resolved by using the proposed Dual buck converter which include improved PFM Mode not to require compensation. The proposed mode controller can also improve the difficulty of detecting the load change of the mode controller, which is the main circuit of the conventional dual mode buck converter, and the slow mode switching speed. the proposed mode controller has mode switching time of at least 1.5us. The proposed DC-DC buck converter was implemented by using $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process and die size was $1.38mm{\times}1.37mm$. The post simulation results with inductor and capacitor including parasitic elements showed that the proposed circuit received the input of 2.7~3.3V and generated output of 1.2V with the output ripple voltage had the PFM mode of 65mV and 16mV at the fixed switching frequency of 2MHz in hysteretic mode under load currents of 1~500mA. The maximum efficiency of the proposed dual-mode buck converter is 95% at 80mA and is more than 85% efficient under load currents of 1~500mA.

  • This paper presents a current sensorless maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control method for dual-mode photovoltaic (PV) module-type interleaved flyback inverters (ILFIs). This system, called the MIC (Module Integrated Converter), has been recently studied in small PV power generation systems. Because the MIC is an inverter connected to one or two PV arrays, the power system is not affected by problems with other inverters. However, since the each PV array requires an inverter, there is a disadvantage that the initial installation cost is increased. To overcome this disadvantage, this paper uses a flyback inverter topology. A flyback inverter topology has an advantage in terms of cost because it uses fewer parts than the other transformer inverter topologies. The MPPT control method is essential in PV power generation systems. For the MPPT control method, expensive dc voltage and current sensors are used in the MIC system. In this paper, a MPPT control method without current sensor where the input current is calculated by a simple equation is proposed. This paper also deals with dual-mode control. Simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the performance and effectiveness of the proposed current sensorless MPPT control method on a 110 [W] prototype.

  • In the present study, a single cylinder four stroke dual fuel diesel engine was tested to investigate the performance and emission characteristics of various test fuels. The engine was tested in dual fuel mode using diesel and Karanja biodiesel blends as pilot fuel along with Natural gas as primary fuel with a constant gas flow rate under different loading conditions. From the experimentation it was found that smoke opacity and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are at low level for all the prepared test fuels in dual fuel mode but the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and hydrocarbon (HC) were found higher. In comparison to diesel fuel, by increasing the blend percentage different emission parameters are found to be reduced. At different loading conditions all the test fuels show poor performance in dual fuel mode of operation when compared with single mode of operation with diesel and biodiesel. With increase in gas flow rates, except (NOx) and smoke emissions, the other emission parameters like CO, HC and $CO_2$ values increased for all test fuels. Again, all blended fuels showed lower performance compared to diesel. The maximum pilot fuel savings for diesel was found decreasing with the increase in karanja biodiesel. From the present work it may be concluded that Karanja biodiesel with Natural gas in dual mode can be can used as promising alternative for diesel with some required engine modifications and further research must be carried out to minimize the emissions of CO, HC and $CO_2$.

  • This paper proposes a high-efficiency, dual-mode PWM / linear buck converter with a wide-input range. The proposed converter was designed with a mode selector that can change the operation between PWM / linear mode by sensing a load current. The proposed converter operates in a linear mode during a light load and in PWM mode during a heavy load condition in order to ensure high efficiency. In addition, the mode selector uses a bit counter and a transmission gate designed to protect from a malfunction due to noise or a time-delay. Also, in conditions between $-40^{\circ}C$ and $140^{\circ}C$, the converter has variations in temperature of $0.5mV/^{\circ}C$ in the PWM mode and of $0.24mV/^{\circ}C$ in the linear mode. Also, to prevent malfunction and breakdown of the IC due to static electricity, the reliability of IC was improved by embedding a self-produced 8 kV-class(Chip level) ESD protection circuit of a P-substrate Triggered SCR type with high robustness characteristics.

  • A novel fast-switching LCD with dual-domain bend (DDB) mode is described. DDB alignment is achieved using antiparallel-rubbed cell filled with chiral-doped LC. Initial alignment is mono-domain 180-degree twist. Tilt direction is controlled by oblique electric field to be counter direction in each domain. Twist-to-DDB deformation occurs continuously so that DDB mode does not require high-voltage initialization which is inevitable in Optically Compen sated Bend (OCB) mode. DDB gives wide and symmetric viewing angle in contrast to mono-domain bend formed from 180-degree twist showing strong asymmetry.

  • We propose a robust blind equalization algorithm based on dual-mode algorithm which incorporates a stop-and-go technique. The constant modulus algorithm(CMA) exhibits very slow convergence when applied to QAM signals and generates phase error. We show that convergence properties of the dual-mode MCMA can be significantly improved by simply adding a stop-and-go technique. To speed up the convergence rate, the TMA-MCMA operates in triple mode that is based on the dual-mode of the MCMA incorporated with the tap-updating control modes of the SGA.

  • Conventional space vector pulse width modulation based asymmetrical dual inverter configuration produces high common mode voltage (CMV) variations. This CMV causes the flow of common mode current, which adversely affects the motor bearings and electromagnetic interference of nearby electronic systems. In this study, a simple and generalized carrier based pulse width modulation (PWM) technique is proposed for dual inverter configuration. This simple approach generates various continuous and discontinuous modulating signals based PWM algorithms. With the application of the discontinuous modulating signal based PWM algorithm to the asymmetrical dual inverter configuration, the CMV can be reduced with a slightly improved quality of output voltage. The performance of the continuous and discontinuous modulating signals based PWM algorithms is explored through both theoretical and experimental studies. Results show that the discontinuous modulating signal based PWM algorithm efficiently reduces the CMV and switching losses.
