  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the optimum rates of animal excreta(cattle slurry-N) for the highest dry matter production and improve the nutritive values of reed canarygrass with different cutting frequency. The results are summarized as follows; The highest relative dry matter yields for annual dry matter yield were 42.2% and 45.2% at 3rd cut in 3 and 4 cuttings, and 34.7% at 4th cut in 5 cuttings, respectively. The annual dry matter yields of non slurry-N application plot showed were from 6.8 tons to 8.0 tons/ha in all cutting frequencies. The highest annual dry matter yield obtained was in 3 cuttings. The annual dry matter yield increased with an increase of applied rates of slurry-N in all cutting frequencies. Annual dry matter yield was produced by 3.3 tons/ha at rates of 90 kg N/ha/cut in 3 cuttings, and more 1.7 tonsha and 2.4 tons/ha at rates of 30 kg N/ha/cut in 4 and 5 cuttings than that of non slurry-N application plots. The contents of crude protein were 12.01% and 15.0% at rates of 90 kg N/ha/cut in 3 and 4 cuttings, and 16.59% at rates of 120 kg N/ha/cut in 5 cuttings, respectively. On the contrary, the content of acid detergent fibre(ADF) showed the lowest values at same rates of slurry-N application in each cutting. J. The average content of crude protein was significantly increased with cutting frequencies, and they were 11.43%, 13.53% and 15.53% in 3, 4 and 5 cuttings, respectively. The average contents of acid detergent fibre(ADF) were 40.27%, 40.53% and 37.06% in 3, 4 and 5 cuttings. The values of 5 cuttings were significantly lower than other cutting frequencies, but the values of acid detergent fibre(ADF) was not significantly different between 3 and 4 cuttings. 6. The efficiency of dry matter production to slurry-N application rates showed the highest values of 18.9 kg and 15.7 kg DM/kg N at rates of 30 kg N/ha/cut in 3 and 5 cuttings, and 16.3 kg DM/kg/ N at rates of 90 kg N/ ha/cut in 4 cuttings. The efficiency of total nitrogen yield to slurry-N application rates were the highest values of 0.51 kg and 0.43 kg W k g N at rates of 30 kg N/ha/cut in 4 and 5 cuttings, and 0.52 kg TN/kg N at rates of 90 kg N/ha/cut in 3 cuttings, respectively. 7. • Experiments were conducted to study the effect of auxins and cultural factors on rooting characteristics in offshoots cutting of Aloe vera. The result obtained were as follows;1. Short offshoots(15-20cm) with rhizome had more roots than that of the removed rhizome, while long offshoots(25-30cm) without rhizome had more roots and heavier root dry weight than short offshoots with rhizome. The highest rooting ability occured when IBA treated 500mg per liter in short offshoots with rhizome, whereas long offshoots without rhizome showed higher rooting ability at the level of 1,000mg/l of IBA and 200mg/I of NAA2. Among three kinds of anxin treated, both IBA and NAA showed better rooting ability than ethychlozate. Root number, root length and root dry weight were higher at 10 min. dipping treatment of IBA 500mg/I for short off-shoots without rhizome and 10 min. dipping treatment of IBA 1,000mg/l for long offshoots with rhizome. Rooting ability of long offshoots was higher than that of short offshoots.3. In addition to IBA 1,000mg/l, 7-day dryness under shading condition increased root number and dry weight of root in offshoots without rhizome. Control treatment lengthened root by increasing drying period under the shading condition.4. The plain soil with mamure had not only higher root dofferentiation but higher root growth of offshoots cutting than the artificial soil.5. Rooting ability in offshoots cutting had a tendency increasing with decrease in shading percentage to natural. Black color poly ethylene film mulching had better rooting ablility than transparency poly ethlene film mulching in offshoots cutting.

  • The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effects of applying times and dilution rates of cattle slurry on dry matter yields of orchard grass. Cattle slurry was applied at the rates of average mineral nitrogen fertilizer equivalent to 150 kg/ha/year in 3 cutting frequency. Significantly higher dry matter yields than that of no fertilization (3.04 ton DM/ha) were recorded in the application of diluted cattle slurry(5.38~6.25 ton DM/ha) (p<0.05). Especially, this tendency was shown with higher annual dry matter yields at the partitioned dressing times, such as at the applications for 1st and 2nd growth, 1st and 3rd growth, and 1st, 2nd and 3rd growth respectively. The yields of annual dry matter both at fertilizing phosphorus and potassium, and phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen were higher than no fertilization as 5.41 tons and 8.78 tons per ha respectively. However, with application of diluted cattle slurry, dry matter yield par year (5.84 ton DM/ha) was higher than those of fertilizing phosphorus and potassium. The efficiencies of dry matter production with mineral and cattle slurry nitrogen application (kg DM/kg N) were 225 and 15.8~18.7 kg DM/kg N respectively. Especially, these tendencies were higher in diluted application plots than in no-diluted application plots of cattle slurry.

  • This experiment was carried out to examine the effects of sowing method and summer management on the dry matter yield, dead matter, weed development and ground cover of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) meadow. The experiment was allocated as a split-split plot design with three replications. The main plots were sowing method of drilling and broadcasting, sub plots were drainage of experimental field, adequate and inadequate, and sub-sub plots were cutting timeof orchardgrass, cutting before rainy season started and cutting after rainy season ended. The experiment was undertaken over a period of 14 months from September, 1983 to October, 1984. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. There were no significant differences in dry matter yield among treatments at the first cutting, but cutting before rainy season produced significantly more forage yield ($P{\le}0.01$) than cutting after rainy season at the second and third cuts. At the third cutting, drilled orchardgrass meadow showed a significant dry matter yield ($P{\le}0.05$) than broadcast orchardgrass meadow, 2. The dead matter of orchardgrass was accumulated only at the second cutting when orchardgrass meadow cut after rainy season. Orchardgrass produced in the adequate and inadequate drainage plots consisted 20.4 and 35.9% of dead material, respectively, but no significant difference was found between two drainage treatments. 3. Drilled orchardgrass meadow produced significantly less weeds ($P{\le}0.05$) than broadcast orchardgrass meadow, but the plots cut after rainy season produced significantly more weeds ($P{\le}0.01$) than the plots cut before rainy season. 4. The percent ground cover of orchardgrass in the plots cut before rainy season was significantly higher ($P{\le}0.01$) than that in the plots cut after rainy season at the second cutting. Drilled plots showed a slight increase in the ground cover than the broadcast, but the difference was not significant. The same trend of ground cover of the meadow estimated at the second cutting was sustained after the third cutting. 5. Based on the results of the experiment, it indicates that the second cut of orchardgrass should be made before rainy season related for maintaining high yield of the meadow. Drilling as a sowing method of orchardgrass meadow could be adopted in the view point of reducing weed development.

  • Browse from oriental white oak(Quercus aliena Blume) was analysed for nutritive value and biomass estimation. The content of cmde protein was high on August and September. NDF, ADF and lignin contents were increased with progressing the seasons but IVDMD, TDN, DE and ME levels were not different from the variation of seasons. Tannin content was high on May and June. Basal stem diameter $\times$ height of tress was highly correlated with browse dry weights(r=0.80**) and the linear regression equation are the follows; Y = 8.23 + O.57X(Y = browse dry weight(g), X= basal stem diameter $\times$ height(cm)). Using the traditional cutting method, the amounts of browse was determined as 823 g dry weight per tree, while the new method by the above equation gave a similar results, i. e., 793 g dry weight per tree. The possibility of browse biomass estimation of oriental white oak by the basal stem diameter $\times$ height index was found.

  • The present study aimed at evaluating the intensity of Tifton 85 conditioning using a mower conditioner with free-swinging flail fingers and storage times on dehydration curve, fungi presence, nutritional value and in vitro digestibility of Tifton 85 bermudagrass hay dry matter (DM). The dehydration curve was determined in the whole plant for ten times until the baling. The zero time corresponded to the plant before cutting, which occurred at 11:00 and the other collections were carried out at 8:00, 10:00, 14:00, and 16:00. The experimental design was randomised blocks with two intensities of conditioning (high and low) and ten sampling times, with five replications. The high and low intensities related to adjusting the deflector plate of the free iron fingers (8 and 18 cm). In order to determine gas exchanges during Tifton 85 bermudagrass dehydration, there were evaluations of mature leaves, which were placed in the upper middle third of each branch before the cutting, at every hour for 4 hours. A portable gas analyser was used by an infrared IRGA (6400xt). The analysed variables were photosynthesis (A), stomatal conductance (gs), internal $CO_2$ concentration (Ci), transpiration (T), water use efficiency (WUE), and intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi). In the second part of this study, the nutritional value of Tifton 85 hay was evaluated, so randomised blocks were designed in a split plot through time, with two treatments placed in the following plots: high and low intensity of cutting and five different time points as subplots: cutting (additional treatment), baling and after 30, 60, and 90 days of storage. Subsequently, fungi that were in green plants as well as hay were determined and samples were collected from the grass at the cutting period, during baling, and after 30, 60, and 90 days of storage. It was observed that Tifton 85 bermudagrass dehydration occurred within 49 hours, so this was considered the best time for drying hay. Gas exchanges were more intense before cutting, although after cutting they decreased until ceasing within 4 hours. The lowest values of acid detergent insoluble nitrogen were obtained with low conditioning intensity after 30 days of storage, 64.8 g/kg DM. The in vitro dry matter of Tifton 85 bermudagrass did not differ among the storage times or the conditioning intensities. There was no fungi present in the samples collected during the storage period up to 90 days after dehydration, with less than 30 colony forming units found on plate counting. The use of mower conditioners in different intensities of injury did not speed up the dehydration time of Tifton 85.

  • These works were conducted to investigate the differences of assimilatory productivity under various conditions of cultivation in mulberry trees with the punch method based on dry matter production. The results obtained are as follow: 1. The dry matter of mulberry leaves at 150cm to 200cm high in the morning and from 50cm to 100cm high in the afternoon were higher than other conditions. 2. In daily change of assimilatory, the production of the leaves from 150 cm to 200 cm high in the morning and from 50 cm to 100 cm high in tile afternoon were higher than other conditions. 3. The largest amount of leaf dry matter was produced in south outside of mulberry field, next east outside, and others showed on differences. 4. Increased assimilatory production was occured greatly not only east side of mulberry field from 7 A.M to 10 A.M but also south side of mulberry field from 10 A.M to 1 P.M. 5. In comparison of dry matter production of leaves among varieties, Suwon-sang No. 4 showed greatest amount and followed Sipyung, Kaeryangsuban, Rosang in order. In the varietal differences of assimilatory production per day, Suwonsang No. 4 was greatest and followed Kaeryrangsuban, Sipyung, Rosang in order, 6. Both of the rate of increasing leaf dry matter and net assimilation per day were greatest in the one-half cutting plot and some decreased in one-third cutting plot, in non-cutting plot in order.

  • The effects of surface conditions of the C-2 cemented carbide substrate on the adhesion of diamond film were investigated. The substrates were pretreated for different times with Murakami's reagent and then the acid solution of an H2SO4-H2O2. The adhesion strength was estimated by a peeling area around the Rockwell-A indentation. The cutting performance of the diamond-coated tools was evaluated by measuring flank wears in dry turning of Al-17% Si alloy. The morphology of deposited diamond crystallites was dominated by (111) and (220) surfaces with a cubooctahedral shape. The diamond film quality was hardly affected by the surface conditions of the substrate. The variation of tool life with longer substrate etching times resulted from a compromies between the increase of film adhesion at the interface and the decrease of toughness at the substrate surface. The coated tools were mainly deteriorated by chipping and flaking of the diamond film form a lock of adhesion strength, differently from the wear phenomena of PCD tools.

  • Although the net-shape molding of composites is generally recommended, molded composites frequently requires cutting or grinding due to the dimensional inaccuracy for precision machine elements. The surface roughness and cutting force were also measured to investigate the surface grinding characteristics of the composites using the vitrified bonded wheel (WA, GC). The experiments were performed dry grinding conditions with respect to cutting speed, feed speed, depth of cut of the stacking sequence $[O]_{nT.}$ From the experimental investigation, the optimal conditions both the vitrified bonded wheel WA and GC for the surface grinding are suggested.
