  • Legume winter cover crop hairy vetch(Vicia villosa Roth, HV) can supply mineral nitrogen for silage corn by HV cover killed. The purphose of this study was to understand changes of soil mineral N, yield and N uptake of silage corn by N level (0, 135kgFN/ha) and cover cmp(no cover crop: NCC, hairy vetch cover crop: HVC) at field of Crop Experiment Station in 1996. HV growth decreased soil mineral N concentration before seeding corn, but killed HV cover increased concentration of soil mineral N at surface soil (0~7.5cm) at six-leaf stage of corn. Total dry matter(DM) and N uptake of corn averaged over N level was more decreased in HVC than in NCC at silk stage, but N uptake of corn after silk was more increased in HVC than in NCC by N mineralized fiom HV killed, especially in OkgFNJha. N fertilization increased total DM and and N uptake of corn averaged over cover crop, especially more increased the DM and N uptake before silk stage. Early application of N fertilizer was recommendable in netillage silage corn using hairy vetch cover crop.

  • This study was carried out to select superior soybean cultivars for forage production for soybean forage production in Jeju. The results obtained are summarized as follows; Eighteen soybean cultivars were grown from May 11 to September 11 in 2002 in Jeju to select superior cultivars for forage production. Days to flowering was shortest(58 days) for Seokryangkong and Keunolkong, and longest(93 days) for Danpaheukdu. Days to flowering for other cultivars ranged from 65 to 69 days. Pureunkong and Namhaekong had greater heights(129.3 and 124.6 cm, respectively) while Keunolkong, Hwaeomkong and Seokryangkong had shorter heights. The number of branches per plant was gratest for Sobaekkong, Manrikong, Pungsankong, Kwangankong and Geumgangkong. The number of leaves per plant was geatest for Sobaekkong, Iksankong and Namhaekong. Rueunkong and Jangmikong had thicker stems. Fresh forage yield was greatest for Iksankong, Sobaekkong and Namhaekong(39.5, 39.3 md 38.0 MT/ha respectively). DM yield of forage was featest for Baekunkong, Hnrunkong and Danpaheukdu. Danwonkong, Dawonkong, Seokryanfong and Pungsankong had ueatest forage crude protein content. Duyukong and Kwangankong had featest forage crude fiber content. Jangmikong and Keunolkong had feater crude fat content, while Sobaekkong and Kwangankong had greater crude ash content. Namhaekong, Seokryangkong, Keunolkong and Jinpumkong had greater NFE contents ranging 40.0 to 43.5 and TDN was featest in Keunolkong, Danpaheukdu, Namhaekong and Seokryangkong had greater NFE contents ranging from 59.8 to 60.9%. The best cultivars in Jeju for forage soybean appear to be Namhaekong, Danpaheukdu md Baehukong on the basis of crude protein, TDN, and dry matter yields.

  • We examined the use of basic forage data and indicators of forage productivity in different regions of Korea. The productivity of winter forage crops was evaluated from mid to late May 2012 by directly collecting information from farmhouses. A survey of winter forage crop productivity was conducted with 66 farmers in 16 regions; including, Italian ryegrass (IRG) from 22 farmers in 11 regions, whole crop barley from 21 farmers in eight regions, rye from 11 farmers in five regions, and IRG mixed with whole crop barley from 12 farmers in six regions. The results indicated that the Konju region exhibited higher yields of dry matter (DM) forage (15,128 kg/ha) and that the Dangjin region (reclaimed land) showed the lowest (3,885 kg/ha). The average yield of DM forage was 9,418 kg/ha. Yields of whole crop barley and IRG mixed with whole crop barley were comparatively higher than those of rye and IRG. We conclude that overall forage productivity was influenced by farmer's cultivation ability rather than the forage cultivation environment.

  • Ninety five Hanwoo steers averaging 226kg of body weight were used to investigate the effect of dietary type on feed efficiency, carcass characteristics and economical analysis in Hanwoo feeding over 22 months. Treatments were composed of commercial formula feed (formula feed), TMR and Fermented-TMR (F-TMR). Intakes of dry matter and TDN were greater in the F-TMR than the other treatments during each growing and fattening phase (p<0.05). Although daily body gain of the F-TMR was lowest during the growing phase, but was 48% greater than those of other treatment during the finishing phase (p<0.05). Feed efficiency of the F-TMR was maintained constantly during whole growing and fattening phases. Carcass weight and rib-eye area of the F-TMR were greatest (p<0.05) among treatments. However, meat yield index and the rate of grade A in meat yield were highest in the formula feed having the thinnest back fat. Marbling score was hugely (p<0.05) increased when steers fed F-TMR, and therateofgrade 1+andoverinmeatqualitywas96%intheF-TMR. Although feed cost in the F-TMR was increased by 40% compare to the formula feed, but net income was increased by 29% due to improvement of meat quality and body gain.

  • A new variety of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) named 'Greenmaster4ho' was developed during the cultivation year 2010-2017 at Grassland and Forages Division, National Institute of Animal Science, Rural Development Administration, Cheonan, Korea. In order to produce this new variety, 5 superior tall fescue lines including 12XFa07, 12XFa15, 12XFa24, 12XFa46, and 12XFa48 were polycrossed. The new variety Greenmaster4ho was evaluated in field test (Cheonan, Pyeongchang, Jeju, and Jinju) for determining the agronomic growth characteristics and forage production capability during 3 years (2015-2017). The dry matter yield (16,236 kg/ha) of Greenmaster4ho was 5 % higher than Fawn, but the nutritive value as forage crops was not significantly different with Fawn. Development of new tall fescue variety with excellent adaptability to changing unfavorable environment would be useful for forage cultivation and yield in Korean environment.

  • This experiment was carried out to study the effects of different environmental conditions and production techniques on forage productivity of Italian ryegrass (IRG) in central and southern regions of Korea from 2016 to 2017. Average dry matter yield of 27 IRG cultivation regions was 6,940kg/ha. Forage productivity of IRG have positive correlation with cultivation techniques(p<0.01) but not correlated with cultivation environments. Forage productivity of IRG have positive correlation with seeding and field management techniques(p<0.01) but not correlated with fertilization techniques. This results suggests that practices of cultivation techniques are more important than cultivation environments for increasing the forage productivity of IRG. Therefore, yield prediction techniques of IRG in Korea have to be considered the practices of cultivation techniques along with soil and climate conditions.

  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT) remote soil moisture control system including soil sensing, automatic water supply chain, and remote alarming system was established on reclaimed land and operated stably. The system was operated using river water around the reclaimed land without fertilizer. On applying this system to control soil moisture, the kenaf germination rate was improved up to two times. Kenaf biomass was 4,748 kg/10a and was higher than that of untreated soil moisture management. When the nutritious liquid fertilizer was used, kenaf yield reached 8,390 kg/10a, which was lower than 10,848 kg/10a of the non-reclaimed land treated with standard chemical fertilizers. As the soil moisture was managed stably through the ICT remote soil moisture control system, the quality of the kenaf crop was improved, resulting in a 7% increase in dry weight, and a 11.5% increase in plant hardness. The estimated kenaf yield was 5,039 kg/10a when 800 tonnes of water were supplied by the ICT remote soil moisture control system with the stream water around Saemangeum reclaimed land without chemical fertilizers and organic matter.
