  • The Richards equation for water movement in unsaturated soil is highly nonlinear partial differential equations which are not solvable analytically unless unrealistic and oversimplifying assumptions are made regarding the attributes, dynamics, and properties of the physical systems. Therefore, conventionally, numerical solutions are the only feasible procedures to model flow in partially saturated porous media. The standard Finite element numerical technique is usually coupled with an Euler time discretizations scheme. Except for the fully explicit forward method, any other Euler time-marching algorithm generates nonlinear algebraic equations which should be solved using iterative procedures such as Newton and Picard iterations. In this study, lumped mass and distributed mass in the frame of Picard and Newton iterative techniques were evaluated to determine the most efficient method to solve the Richards equation with finite element model. The accuracy and computational efficiency of the scheme and of the Picard and Newton models are assessed for three test problems simulating one-dimensional flow processes in unsaturated porous media. Results demonstrated that, the conventional mass distributed finite element method suffers from numerical oscillations at the wetting front, especially for very dry initial conditions. Even though small mesh sizes are applied for all the test problems, it is shown that the traditional mass-distributed scheme can still generate an incorrect response due to the highly nonlinear properties of water flow in unsaturated soil and cause numerical oscillation. On the other hand, non oscillatory solutions are obtained and non-physics solutions for these problems are evaded by using the mass-lumped finite element method.

  • This paper presents the experimental study on the design conditions of pressure between booster ejector and air ejector in the steam-jet water-vapour refrigeration system. In this experiment, the motive steam of booster ejector and ai. ejector was dry saturated from 6 ata to 8 ata and flash chamber pressure were about $10\∼540mmHg$ higher than mixing section in booster ejector. The investigation of air on the pressure of booster ejector was performed by changing the condenser pressure. The experimental results show that flash chamber vacuum and condenser pressure of steam-jet refrigeration cycle increased in accordance with the increase of motive steam Pressure. Among the several nozzle sires tested, No.4 nozzle were best in term of evaporator vacuum under the constant operating conditions of air ejector in condenser.

  • Engineers have performed slope stability analyses, including Limit Equilibrium Analysis, Finite Difference Analysis and Finite Element Analysis. Each analysis results in different Factor of Safety(FS) for slopes. The comparison of FS results from these stability analyses has been carried out for various conditions, such as geometry of slopes, dry and fully saturated soils, nail and anchor reinforcements. Standard deviations of FS calculated from various slope analyses are 0.03 to 0.04 and 0.22 to 0.48 for the slopes without and with nail or anchor reinforcement, respectively. Construction of tiered concrete retaining wall in addition to nail or anchor reinforcement increases FS of 12% to 29% for fully saturated soils.

  • Bearing capacity of shallow foundations is often determined for either dry or saturated soils. In some occasions, foundations may be subjected to external loading which is inclined and/or eccentric. In this study, the ultimate bearing capacity of shallow foundations resting on partially saturated coarse-grained cohesionless and fine-grained cohesive soils subjected to a wide range of combined vertical (V) - horizontal (H) - moment (M) loadings is rigorously evaluated using the well-established limit equilibrium method. The unified effective stress approach as well as the suction stress concept is effectively adopted so as to simulate the behaviour of the underlying unsaturated soil medium. In order to obtain the bearing capacity, four equilibrium equations are solved by adopting Coulomb failure mechanism and Bishop effective stress concept and also considering a linear variation of the induced matric suction beneath the foundation. The general failure loci of the shallow foundations resting on unsaturated soils at different hydraulic conditions are presented in V - H - M spaces. The results indicate that the matric suction has a marked influence on the bearing capacity of shallow foundations. In addition, the effect of induced suction on the ultimate bearing capacity of obliquely-loaded foundations is more pronounced than that of the eccentrically-loaded footings.

  • One-step reduction/dyeing method was applied for ramie dyeing with natural indigo powder. The effect of reduction/dyeing conditions including the pH of bath, dye temperature and time, and concentration of indigo powder and reduction agent on dye uptake and color properties were investigated. Regardless of addition of alkali, the dyed fabrics appeared in the PB Munsell color range(${\lambda}_{max}$: 660 nm) and the dye uptake was much higher with no addition of sodium hydroxide. Dyeing was carried out through the use of only sodium hydrosulfite in the bath. The maximum dye uptake was obtained at 60 for 30min. Saturated dye uptake was obtained at 2 g/L of sodium hydrosulfite concentration up to 2 g/ L of indigo powder. Whereas, at higher indigo powder concentration (4 g/L), more than 3 g/L of reducing agent concentration was required for obtaining the saturated dye uptake. Color reproducibility was reliable with color difference in the range of 0.03~0.16. Regardless of color strength, fastness to rubbing was acceptable with a 3/4~4/5. Fastness to washing, dry cleaning, and light of samples with low color strength were poor. Whereas, fastness to washing, dry cleaning, and light of samples with high color strength were very good.

  • The natural dyeing of cotton fabrics with Rumex crispus L. root extract was investigated. The dyeability of Rumex crispus L. root extract was evaluated with conditions of concentration, temperature, time, repeat-numbers, pH, mordants variables, methods of mordanting, color fastness and antibacterial activity, etc. The maximum V-visible spectrum possessed absorption band of Rumex crispus L. extract appeared at 274nm and 336nm. The amount of dyes extracted was increased with extracting concentration, temperature and time. The K/S value increased with increasing dyeing concentration and repeat-numbers. The K/S value increased with increasing dyeing temperature and time, the exhaustion was saturated in $90^{\circ}C\;and\;80min$, respectively. Surface colors of fabrics dyed with pH 3, 7, 11 extract were RP-R-YR-Y range. The light fastness and washing fastness showed good results in Fe-mordanted. The dry leaning fastness appeared more than 4 grade. Rubbing fastness was better in dry methods han that in wet methods. In the result of antibacterial activity, the decrease rate was 9.9% to Staphylococcus aureus with the dyed fabric of cotton.

  • This study was under taken as an analysis of failure mode in a railroad bed reconstructed with miniaturized Geotextile Container after being destroyed by heavy rain. It assesses the practical use of the bag shaped Geotextile Container method in the rehabilitation of destroyed roadbeds. The failure mode was assessed using the laboratory model tests to determine the following criteria: Strain of Geotextile Container, Vertical & Horizontal displacements of Geotextile Container layer, and the transmitting load effects due to the applied load. The Geotextile Container layer was failed as a Block Failure type, although there was some variation in the results between the saturated and unsaturated conditions. The main failure was caused by the reduction of the interface friction between Geotextile Containers. The result of this mobilizes the significant horizontal displacement and the ultimate failure of the Geotextile Container layer. The strain on the wet Geotextile Container was occurred about two times greater than that of dry condition.
