  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of group music therapy using the traditional drum on the; social adjustment, self-image, and emotional adjustment, of children with hearing impairment. I participated in this group music therapy using the traditional drum with 7 children with hearing impairment for 3 days a week for 6 weeks(including holidays), and each session was 50 minutes long. The evaluation form of this study is a social-emotional development measurement sheet of Meadow-Kendall, which the children's teacher distributed to the children both pre- and post-examination. With these results, the researcher carried out Window SPSS 19 Version and searched for the experiment's effect of measurement cause (I am not sure what this means.) through paired t-test to identify the experiment's effects (social adjustment, self-image, emotional adjustment) as a result of group music therapy using the traditional drum for children with hearing impairment. This study arrived at the following conclusions. First, after I participated in the group music therapy using the traditional drum, the result of the comparisons of the pre-to-post average for social adjustment showed the statistical significance level of the 0.01 standard. Therefore, it was found that the group music therapy using the traditional drum had a positive effect on the social adjustment of children with hearing Impairment. Second, after I participated in the group music therapy using the traditional drum, the result of the comparisons of the pre-to-post average for self-image development showed the statistical significance level of the 0.01 standard. Therefore, the group music therapy using the traditional drum had a positive effect on the self-image of children with hearing impairment. Third, after I participated in the group music therapy using the traditional drum, the result of the comparisons of the pre-to-post average for emotional adjustment showed the statistical significance level of the 0.01 standard. Therefore, the group music therapy using the traditional drum had a positive effect on the emotional adjustment of children with hearing impairment.

  • We introduce a learning system for the sight reading of simple drum sequences. Sight reading is a cognitive-motor skill that requires reading of music symbols and actions of multiple limbs for playing the music. The system provides knowledge of results (KR) pertaining to the learner's performance by color-coding music symbols, and guides the learner by indicating the corresponding action for a given music symbol using additional auditory or vibrotactile cues. To evaluate the effects of KR and guidance cues, three learning methods were experimentally compared: KR only, KR with auditory cues, and KR with vibrotactile cues. The task was to play a random 16-note-long drum sequence displayed on a screen. Thirty university students learned the task using one of the learning methods in a between-subjects design. The experimental results did not show statistically significant differences between the methods in terms of task accuracy and completion time.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze drum performance techniques, focusing on the representative artists of funk music, who had a revival starting in the 1970s. The purpose of this study is to analyze the creativity shown in David Garibaldi's playing technique, which had a great influence on drum majors with his funk drum playing technique. As a research method, 'James Brown', 'Earth, Wind & Fire' and 'Tower of Power' with David Garibaldi as drummer were selected as representative bands. For the study period, the drum performance was examined by selecting two representative songs from among the songs released between 1965 and 1975, when the development of the corresponding funk music began. David Garibaldi's creative performance in this study is as follows. First, we tried to create a new rhythm in the form of changing the beat or resting the beat out of the frame of contemporary drum performance. Second, the 'Paradiddle', 'Accent', and 'Swiss Army triplet' rudiment techniques were applied to the entire drum kit, bringing innovation to the rhythm. Third, the samba pattern of Latin rhythm and the form of 'Afro-Cuban' were grafted onto funk music. Fourth, the idea of Unison Rhythm obtained from the structure of Latin music was applied to funk music. Based on this study, it is hoped that research on drum performance techniques of various genres will be conducted.

  • Drum Set are representative instruments that use grips in modern popular music. Depending on how and how clearly you hold the basic grip, it also affects your performance ability. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses of each grip, derive the resulting complex effects, and present practical application plans to the drummers. The research method is largely divided into traditional and matched grips, and in detail, German, American, French, and hybrid styles are included to analyze the performance method utilized. It also refers to the grip method of all drummers from the 1930s to the present, which was registered in Drummer World, an overseas drum site. This study proposed several application plans by classifying and analyzing the most basic grip methods in drum set in detail. I was able to see that the performance impact was different depending on the grip, and I think it will be more helpful for future performances if I understand both the positive and adverse functions of each grip and play it.

  • The mask dance drama Goseong Ogwangdae's first act, Mundung Bukchum. The story is about a man who was born to the upper class but contracted leprosy, an incurable disease, due to his ancestors' accumulated sin. Although he is suffering, he is able to triumph over the disease through sinmyeong (catharsis) that is expressed through the wordless act of Mundung Bukchum. This thesis focuses on Goseong Ogwangdae's Mundung Bukchum, particularly the meaning, costume, accompanying music, and process of pedagogical transmission. The chronological characteristics of Goseong Ogwangdae's Mundung Bukchum are as follows. First, as time goes on, the number of dance motions in Mundung Bukchum has increased and the motions used have become reified. Second, I address the small barrel drum used in Mundung Bukchum and check how, through the drum, the changed expression of Mundung is shown. In a 1965 video introduced Mundung is grasping the drum and stick and the dance appears to be made up only of humorous motions. Also in a 1969 video, "Mundung Gwangdae," from the start Mundung is grasping the drum and stick. In 1988 in a video we can see the same scene as today, with the drum and stick sitting in the center of the stage at the start of the dance. We can also confirm that the same fourteen dance motions used today are present. Third, we can also confirm the changes in Goseong Ogwangdae's signature motion, baegimsae as time goes on. Observing the video from 1965, baegimsae does not appear in Mundung Bukchum. In 2000 we can clearly see the baegimsae performed once to the left and to the right while Mundung is squatting. Comparing 1969 to 1988, there is no symmetry in the motions, baegimsae is not done to both left and right, but only in one direction. Watching the record from 2000, the baegimsae motion is performed just as it is now, with the body thrown forward with a sharp push off the ground. Fourth I confirmed how the music used to accompany Goseong Ogwangdae's Mundung Bukchum has changed over time. In 1965 according to records of Mundung Bukchum's appearance, the dance was accompanied by the taryeong rhythmic pattern played on the usual four percussion instruments (barrel drum, hourglass drum, large gong, small gong). In the 1969 records of Mundung Bukchum the accompanying music is gutgeori rhythmic pattern performed on the usual four percussion instruments-an obvious difference. In 1988 the music with Mundung Bukchum is gutgeori rhythmic pattern transitioning into jajinmori rhythmic pattern. In 2000 the music with Mundung Bukchum includes the percussion instruments as well as taepyeongso (double reed oboe) playing gutgeori and jajinmori rhythmic patterns.

  • The purpose of this study was to test the effects of music therapy on cognitive function and depression in demented old adults. This study was made with one -group in a pre- and post-test design. The subjects were seven demented old adults over, sixty-five years and with mild to moderate cognitive impairment, residing at a nursing home. Music therapy was given by one researcher and one research assistant for thirty to forty minutes twice a week for 4 months. Music therapy was conducted with the subjects both listening and singing with a cassette player and a double-handed drum. In order to evaluate the effects of music, we measured the level of cognitive function and depression at the beginning and at the end of the music therapy session by means of an MMSE- K developed by Kwon and Park and the Depression Inventory developed by Chon. The Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired t - test analysis using a SPSS PC package. The results are as follows: 1) The subjects of the music therapy showed improvement in cognitive function. The MMSE-K score was significantly increased after music therapy. Especially, memory recall was very significantly. 2) The subjects of the music therapy showed a slight decrease in depression. However, there was no significant difference in the degree of depression between mean scores measured before and after music therapy. The results suggest that music therapy is effective in improving and maintaining cognitive function in demented old adults. And we suggest that long-term music therapy will be required to improve depression in demented old adults. These findings are encouraging the idea that music therapy may improve cognitive impairment.
