Driving behavior Analysis to Verify the Criteria of a Driver Monitoring System in a Conditional Autonomous Vehicle - Part II - (부분 자율주행자동차의 운전자 모니터링 시스템 안전기준 검증을 위한 운전 행동 분석 -2부-)

  • This study aimed to verify the criteria of the driver monitoring systems proposed by UNECE ACSF informal working group and the ministry of land, infrastructure, and transport of South Korea using driving behavior data. In order to verify the criteria, we investigated the safety regulations of driver monitoring systems in a conditional autonomous vehicle and found that the driver monitoring measures were related to eye blinks times, head movements, and eye closed duration. Thus, we took two different experimental data including real-world driving and simulator-based drowsy driving behaviors in previous studies. The real-world driving data were used for analyzing blink times and head movement intervals, and the drowsiness data were used for eye closed duration. In the drowsy driving study, 10 drivers drove approximately 37 km of a monotonous highway (about 22 min) twice. The results suggested that the appropriate duration of eyes continuously closed was 4 seconds. The results from real-world driving data were presented in the other paper - part 1.

  • In this study, we calculated the driving duration of individual vehicles according to the availability of rest facility on highway, and suggested indicators indicating the potential risk of accidents caused by long-term driving with weights based on the number of vehicles by driving duration of individual links. Based on this, the methodology for estimating the appropriate location of the highway rest facility considering the driving duration of individual vehicles was presented. Using the DSRC individual vehicle data collected from the highways, the appropriate location of the rest facility was calculated by considering the driving duration by classifying weekdays and weekends for the Gyeongbu Expressway. The results showed that the weekly and weekend high risk indicators were different. In the case of weekdays, the risk indicators of Gimchun JC to Kumho JC for Busan were high, while for weekends, the risk indicators of Ansung JC to Dongtan JC for Seoul and Ansung IC to Bukchunan IC for Busan were high. This study has great significance in that it provides a framework for detailed analysis of link units by using non-aggregated data of individual vehicle units. In addition, it is significant that the reasonable driving duration reflecting the behavior of individual vehicles was calculated by analyzing the use of rest facilities.

Thus, we took two different experimental data including real-world driving and simulator-based drowsy driving behaviors in previous studies. The real-world driving data were used for analyzing blink times and head movement intervals, and the drowsiness data were used for eye closed duration. In the real-world driving study, 52 drivers drove approximately 11.0 km of rural road (about 20 min), 7.9 km of urban road (about 25 min), and 20.8 km of highway (about 20 min). The results suggested that the appropriate number of blinks during the last 60 seconds was 4 times, and the head movement interval was 35 seconds. The results from drowsy driving data will be presented in another paper - part 2.

Experimental Installation of Pressure Oscillation based on Pulse-driving Technique

  • Under the background of combustion instability in solid rocket motor, to study the relationship between pressure oscillations and dynamic process of propellant flames, it is necessary to simulate an oscillation environment with certain frequency, amplitude and duration. This paper presents an experimental installation of pressure oscillation based on pulse-driving technique, with which pressure oscillations features under different pulse-driving conditions were compared and analyzed. For the pulse-driver applied in this paper, a pressure oscillation with 0.15s-0.5s duration, 179Hz-210Hz first order frequency, 0.04MPa-0.35MPa amplitude is simulated. The test results show that an oscillation with higher frequency and lager amplitude can be obtained when pulse-driver is installed on the top of the installation cavity, while on the side, an oscillation with a longer duration and approximate cavity natural frequency can be simulated.

  • The solenoid actuated hydrogen injector and the capacitive peak-hold type driving circuit were designed and made, and the hydrogen supply system for in-cylinder injection was constructed with these. The performance of the injector was investigated through measuring the pintle lift profiles and the injection quantities, and the performance of the hydrogen supply system was confirmed through the experiments at the single cylinder engine. The injection quantity increased linearly as the duration of driving signal increased. At the single cylinder engine, the hydrogen injector was operated stably. The hydrogen flow rate of the injector with the peak-hold type driving circuit could be controlled precisely at high engine speed or low load condition only with the variation of signal duration.

  • Vehicle performances such as fuel consumption and catalyst-out emissions are affected by a driving pattern, which is defined as a driving cycle with the grade in this study. We developed an algorithm to recognize a current driving pattern by using a neural network. And this algorithm can be used in adapting the driving control strategy to the recognized driving pattern. First, we classified the general driving patterns into 6 representative driving patterns, which are composed of 3 urban driving patterns, 2 suburban driving patterns and 1 expressway driving pattern. A total of 24 parameters such as average cycle velocity, positive acceleration kinetic energy, relative duration spent at stop, average acceleration and average grade are chosen to characterize the driving patterns. Second, we used a neural network (especially the Hamming network) to decide which representative driving pattern is closest to the current driving pattern by comparing the inner products between them. And before calculating inner product, each element of the current and representative driving patterns is transformed into 1 and -1 array as to 4 levels. In the end, we simulated the driving pattern recognition algorithm in a temporary pattern composed of 6 representative driving patterns and, verified the reliable recognition performance.

  • In the fields of electronics and displays where inkjet printing has demonstrated its capability to fabricate colorant subpixels of thin film transistor liquid crystal(TFT LCD) color filters and organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays, conducting tracks and TFTs, the production of satellite droplets is one of primary things to eliminate because they generally deteriorate the pattern quality. To understand the production mechanism of satellite droplets in this paper, driving waveforms such as monopolar and bipolar were employed and the influence of the pulse duration time were investigated in both experimental and numerical aspects.

Designing Real-time Observation System to Evaluate Driving Pattern through Eye Tracker

  • The purpose of this research is to determine the point of fixation of the driver during the process of driving. Based on the results of this research, the driving instructor can make a judgement on what the trainee stare on the most. Traffic accidents have become a serious concern in modern society. Especially, the traffic accidents among unskilled and elderly drivers are at issue. A driver should put attention on the vehicles around, traffic signs, passersby, passengers, road situation and its dashboard. An eye-tracking-based application was developed to analyze the driver's gaze behavior. It is a prototype for real-time eye tracking for monitoring the point of interest of drivers in driving practice. In this study, the driver's attention was measured by capturing the movement of the eyes in real road driving conditions using these tools. As a result, dwelling duration time, entry time and the average of fixation of the eye gaze are leading parameters that could help us prove the idea of this study.

Effects on Fractal Dimension by Automobile Driver's EEG during Highway Driving : Based on Chaos Theory (직선 고속 주행시 운전자의 뇌파가 프랙탈 차원에 미치는 영향: 카오스 이론을 중심으로)

  • In this study, the psycho-physiological response of drivers was investigated in terms of EEG(Electroencephalogram), especially with the fractal dimensions computed by Chaotic algorithm. The Chaotic algorithm Is well Known to sensitively analyze the non-linear information such as brain waves. An automobile with a fully equipped data acquisition system was used to collect the data. Ten healthy subjects participated in the experiment. EEG data were collected while subjects were driving the car between Won-ju and Shin-gal J.C. on Young-Dong highway The results were presented in terms of 3-Dimensional attractor to confirm the chaotic nature of the EEG data. The correlation dimension and fractal dimension were calculated to evaluate the complexity of the brain activity as the driving duration changes. In particular, the fractal dimension indicated a difference between the driving condition and non-driving condition while other spectral variables showed inconsistent results. Based upon the fractal dimension, drivers processed the most information at the beginning of the highway driving and the amount of brain activity gradually decreased and stabilized. No particular decrease of brain activity was observed even after 100 km driving. Considering the sensitivity and consistency of the analysis by Chaotic algorithm, the fractal dimension can be a useful parameter to evaluate the psycho-physiological responses of human brain at various driving conditions.

  • Fuel injection system is very important in diesel combustion. Recently electronic control of fuel injection system and common rail systems are introduced to reduce the emission and to increase the energy efficiency from diesel engine by control of the injection timing and duration. In this study, evaluation possibility of the system for electronic control by spool valve, one of the accumulator type injection systems with spool valve using solenoid was composed and the operating characteristics were investigated to evaluate the effects of spring coefficient, initial spring force, solenoid driving time, fuel supply pressure on the injection timing and duration. We could confirm the capability that diesel injection was electronically controlled by spool valve.
