Observations of Boring Behaviour and the Drilling Mechanism of Lunatia fortunei (Gastropoda: Naticidae) in Western Korea

  • Boring behaviour and drilling mechanism were investigated by visual observations. In this study, of two kinds of holes (the outer and inner holes) which are formed by drilling of boring gastropod Lunatia fortunei (Naticidae), the diameters of the outer holes are broader and larger than those of the inner holes, and their holes look like the crater in shape, as seen in all valves of bivalves bored by Naticidae species. Two kinds of glands (the accessory boring gland and accessory salivary gland) on the foots of boring gastropods have been investigated. Of them, it has been confirmed that only the accessory salivary glands on the foots secreted sulphuric (acidic) components in the mucus (secretion), while the accessory boring glands on the foots did not secrete their components. In this study, we confirmed that L. fortunei possess the accessory boring gland on the foot, as seen in most species in Naticidae. Accoeding to the results of the experiment of the blue litmus paper tests of the mucus (secretions) secreted from the accessory boring gland the color of the blue litmus paper did not turn red in color because chemical components of mucus (secretion) secreted from the accessory boring gland on the foot of L. fortunei (boring gastropod) were not acidic components. It is supposed that the mucus, which is secreted from the accessory boring gland, contained gelatin-like substances or enzymes without acidic components, as already reported in Naticidae species. Therefore, these substances may be involved in softening the surface of the valves of M. veneriformis. Consequently, it is assumed thar L. fortunei bores holes through the shells of molluscs by means of following 3 methods: (1) a softening of the calcareous shells of M. veneriformis with chemical secretions (including gellatin-like substances or enzyme except for acidic components) from the accessory boring glands, (2) mechanical rasping with the radula, (3) a combination of both. In this study, particularly, acidic components, which are involved in softening the surface of the shells, are not associated with the boring mechanism of L. fortunei because chemical acidic components were not detected in the mucus (secretion), as found in Naticidae species.

Analysis on Burr Formation in Drilling with New Concept Drill (새로운 개념의 드릴에 의한 구멍가공시 버 형성에 관한 연구)

  • A new concept drill was developed recently (or increasing accuracy and productivity in drilling operation. The burr formation in drilling causes many problems in deburring operation because burrs are formed inside holes and it is difficult to remove them. Burr formations are observed in drilling operation with a new concept drill and are compared with conventional HSS drill. Several workpieces with different materials are drilled with several cutting conditions, velocity and feed rate. The burr in drilling can be classified into three types according to the location of crack. To observe the burr formation mechanism, the cap which is formed with the new concept drill is observed and measured.

Micro Drilling using 2-directional Vibration in a Plane (양방향 평면진동을 이용한 미세구멍가공)

  • By generating 2-directional vibration in a xy plane of workpiece table, a newly developed micro drilling using 2-directional vibration was carried out. The vibration was produced by applying sinusoidal voltages to the orthogonally arranged piezoelectric materials built in the workpiece excitation table. Through the micro-drilling experiments using poly-carbonate and brass material, it was found that micro drilling using 2-directional vibration in a workpiece table could be an efficient method to enhance the form accuracy of machined workpiece by suppressing burr formation at both entry and exit region. A higher form accuracy could be obtained by increasing stiffness of feeding mechanism, decrease of geometric tolerance of combining jig, and development of high performance excitation table which generates amplified vibration at higher frequency.

  • In recent years, composite materials like CFRP are increasingly used in various fields of engineering because of their unique properties which offer a high strength/density and high modulus/density. When CFRP structures are manufactured in drilling processes which are frequently practiced in an Industry, they bring on the delaminations sometimes. So, acoustic emission(AE) techniques were used for a condition monitoring of the drilling process in CFRP. In this study, the AE from CFRP estimated the delamination which reduces the strength and load carrying capacity under the drilling process and the initial delamination were well caught and measured by a video camera. From the results, it was found the relationships between failure mechanism of CFRP delamination and AE characteristics as like amplitude and count.

  • Drilling chatter is regenerative type self-excited vibration and can be predicted by the measurments of the dynamic compliance between tool and workpiece based on structural dynamics and cutting dynamics. This paper describes the theoretical prediction about drilling chatter and the mechanism of the formation of multi-coner shape in holes by drilling chatter. By the experiments and theoretical study, it is found that the odd number of multi-coner shape is always generated by drilling chatter.

Experimental Study on the Effect of Drilling Fluid with Different Mix Designs for Bore Hole Collapse Prevention (시추 안정액 배합설계에 따른 공벽 붕괴방지 효과에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This paper presents the results of a reduced-scale physical model investigation into the effect of drilling fluid with different mix designs for bore hole collapse prevention. The bore hole collapse prevention mechanism for the bentonite based drilling fluid was first discussed together with the effect of conditioning with different additives on engineering characteristics of bentonite based drilling fluid. Reduced-scale model tests were then carried out considering field procedures for cases with a decomposed granitic soil with 20% fines and a sand with various drilling fluids with different mix designs. The results indicated that the addition of polymer to the bentonite based drilling fluid decreases the amount of drilling fluid injected, the drilling fluid infiltration thickness and increases the final depth of excavation. Also revealed is that the effect of polymer on the performance of drilling fluid is more pronounced in the decomposed granite soil with 20% fines than the sand. Practical implications of the findings from this study are discussed in great detail.

  • This paper presents the results of a engineering characteristic to the effect of drilling fluid with different mix designs for use in bore hole collapse prevention. The bore hole collapse prevention mechanism for the bentonite based drilling fluid was first discussed together with the effect of conditioning with different additives on engineering characteristics of bentonite based drilling fluid. As result, bentonite with polymer have a outstanding characteristics as compared to CMC Properties thickening effect In the case of sea water with attatulgite be superior to bentonite. Therefore, in this paper presented qualitative result on the performance of the drilling fluid depending on the water.

Hole quality assessment of drilled CFRP and CFRP-Ti stacks holes using polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools

  • Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools possessing high hardness and abrasive wear resistance are particularly suited for drilling of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites, where tool life and consistent hole quality are important. While PCD presents superior performance when drilling CFRP, it is unclear how it performs when drilling multi-stack materials such as CFRP-titanium (Ti) stacks. This comparative study aims to investigate drilling of a Ti plate stacked on a CFRP panel when using PCD tools. The first sequence of the drilling experiments was to drill 20 holes in CFRP only. CFRP-Ti stacks were then drilled for the next 20 holes with the same drill bit. CFRP holes and CFRP-Ti stack holes were evaluated in terms of machined hole quality. The main tool wear mechanism of PCD drills is micro-fractures that occur when machining the Ti plate of the stack. Tool wear increases the instability and the operation temperature when machining the Ti plate. This results in high drilling forces, large hole diameter errors, high surface roughness, wider CFRP exit thermal damage, and taller exit Ti burrs.

  • There are a number of studies concentrating on drilling equipment and drilling methods, but none investigates the impact performance and optimization of DTH (down-the-hole) drilling. It is very difficult to experimentally evaluate the performance of a DTH hammer, because putting together an experimental setup for DTH drilling requires a great deal of money and time. Therefore, this paper examines the characteristics and performance of DTH hammers through pneumatic simulation after a thorough investigation of their working mechanism. In addition, the parameters linked to the performance of DTH hammers were selected using the design-of-experiment method, and then the optimization of performance factors, which are the impact rate and impact energy, was investigated using Taguchi method.

  • Drilling file is medical mini-drill which is made of Ni-Ti material and has tapered shape. It's for removing teeth nervine which helps the endodontic treatment. All files, saled at domestic market, are imported from U.S. and Europe. Also they have low manufacturing efficiency and high price because it is made by universal 5 axis CNC grinding machine. To solve these problem, 3 axis CNC table, controllable tilting angle spindle and helix angle moving table are devised. To confirm divised CNC grinding machine's manufacturing accuracy, conveying amount and finish product size measurement expreiment has been practiced. Also to automate all manufacturing processes, automatic mechanism is designed.
