  • A drilled shaft is a deep foundation that is constructed by placing fluid concrete in a drilled hole. Reinforcing steel can be installed in the excavation, if desired, prior to placing the concrete. Drilled shafts provide excellent foundation systems for civil structures. In order to utilize them effectively, it is essential that designers have a clear understanding for how drilled shafts are constructed and also understand the basis for design methods. This paper describes standard design methods for drilled shafts.

  • In the long span bridge construction, construction cost portion of large scale marine foundation is about 40% (KICTEP, 2007). In this study, designs for deep water depth large composite foundation of a super long span cable-stayed girder bridge of prototype were performed by three design methods (ASD, LRFD, Eurocode) and the behaviors of a large diameter drilled shaft were analyzed and the 3D numerical analysis was performed. As a result, the soft rock socket lengths in allowable stress design estimation method were the longest. The soft rock socket lengths estimated by the design approach 2 among Eurocode and the LRFD were similar. The longer the socket length socketed in the soft rock was, the smaller the axial force acting on a large-diameter drilled shaft head was and the smaller the settlement of drilled shaft was.

  • The trend of current urban redevelopment and new city development project shows that the superstructure of building is getting larger and higher in consequence of a limited plottage condition. For this reason, it is definitely required to extend pile diameter and install more deep foundation(Mega foundation) to support superstructure. The existing precast pile construction method causes construction-related problems such as increasing quantities, difficulty of storage & transportation material and decreasing design load while construct pile in deep foundation. The drilled shaft method has applied to minimize those problems. This article will be presented construction case study of design & construction of R.C.D method for a large building foundation work on the inside and outside of the country.

  • Drilled deep foundations of large diameter are often used for foundations of transmission towers. As tower structures become larger in modern society, there is a need of more efficient and economical design of large-diameter drilled deep foundations. Reinforced drilled deep foundations are popular in Japan for the foundation of tower structures. Stiffeners attached to the shaft of the foundation are used to increase the shaft resistance. This study aims at analyzing the effect of reinforcement with large-diameter drilled deep foundations based on numerical analysis of the representative soil and rock conditions in Korea. The numerical analyses are conducted to analyze the reinforcement effect of various stiffener conditions of number, inclination, location and length. Regarding to number of stiffeners, the effect of reinforcement for weathered and soft rocks increases proportionally as the number of stiffeners increases. For weathered soil, however, the effect of reinforcement increases at a lower rate. The effect of stiffener location is nearly negligible for axially loading cases, while it is significant for laterally loading cases. For the laterally loading cases, upper locations of stiffener give greater reinforcement effect than that of lower location. For stiffener inclinations of axial loading cases, a stiffener inclination equal to 60$^{\circ}$ gives the greatest reinforcement effect.

  • Recently the most of deep foundation were socketed into weathered rock or soft rock to carry large foundation loads. The end bearing behavior of piles socketed in rock is generally dependent on the rock mass conditions with discontinuities and rock strength. Therefore, it is very important that the estimating rock classification with relation of TCR, RQD and unpredicted rock condition. In this study, the construction failure example of drilled shaft due to mistaking to estimate the rock classification on penetration were analyzed in site, so we hope to discuss problems of determining the rock socketed length of drilled shaft on construction.

  • These days we broadly apply drilled shafts for deep foundations to build infrastructures. The defects of the deep foundations cause the decrease of their support load capacity and the increase of settlement, and the subsequent damage of the super-structures. In consequence, non-destructive testings techniques of concrete piles are important for their integrity evaluation. To improve understanding and reliable application of the impact echo method for the integrity evaluation of the drilled concrete piles, numerical studies of the impact response of concrete piles by using axi-symmetric three-dimensional finite element method are peformed for (a) sound piles: (b) piles containing necks, voids and layers of low-quality concrete: and (c) piles in soil and/or above rock. The results of these studies show that the finite element method is effective for evaluating the impact response of drilled concrete piles.

  • A Large-diameter drilled shaft of deep water depth composite foundation supporting a high rise pylon of the test designed super long span bridge was designed by allowable stress design method and failure probability through reliability analysis to bearing capacity was estimated. The allowable stress design results for the bearing capacity of a drilled shaft were analyzed by reliability analysis and the probability of failure shows 0.12 % in case of CFEM, 0.0002 % in case of Korea Highway Corporation criterion, and 0.003 % in case of structure foundation design criterion. In the allowable stress design, the bearing capacity of a large-diameter drilled shaft was obtained by applying to safety factor 3 and reliability analysis for the results was done. If the failure probability suggested by AASHTO(2007) specification is set to 0.02 %, the socketed length of a drilled shaft shows an increase of 25 % in CFEM, decrease of 60 % in KHCC, and decrease of 89 % in SFDC.

  • In this study, a test bed was constructed in order to evaluate thermal efficiency of the energy pile which carries out combined roles of a structural foundation and of a heat exchanger. The energy pile in this study is designed as a large-diameter drilled shaft equipped with the heat exchange pipes which configures a W-shape and an S-shape. The drilled shaft reached to the depth of 60 m whilst the heat exchange pipes were installed to about 30 m deep from the ground surface. The W-shaped and S-shaped heat exchange pipes were installed in the opposite sections of the same drilled shaft. In-situ thermal response tests were performed for both the shapes of heat exchange pipes. To avoid underestimating the thermal performance due to hydration heat of concrete inside the drilled shaft, the in-situ thermal response tests for the energy pile were performed after four weeks since the installation of the energy pile.

  • As the Deep Cement Mixing Method is composed of drilled natural soft soil structure and injected cement slurry to be mix together in it, the nature of excavated ground is influenced directly to the application of constructability. Also the nature of in situ soil is the main material, the mix design and construction work plan should be established before the investigation of soil which is performed through the whole site confirm the soil parameter before construction. The nature of investigated soil and water level as should be performed accurately.

  • During construction of deep foundation in soft rock under varying soil properties, it is essential to locate the rock stratum, especially when drilling with slurry. When slurry is used for drilling, the bottom of the borehole cannot be seen, thereafter soil cuttings cannot be differentiated from soft rock cuttings. A new static rock penetrometer, known as Rock Penetrometer was developed during this study. It could be a simple mechanical device that is attached to the bottom of a Kelly bar which is used to attach drilling tools such as augers and core barrels while drilling. After its calibration in the laboratory, the performance of the static rock penetrometer was verified in the several field test sites.
