This paper performs a numerical computation of ship maneuvering performance in waves. For this purpose, modular-type model (MMG (Mathematical Modeling Group) model) is adopted for maneuvering simulation and wave drift force is included in the equation of maneuvering motion. In order to compute wave drift force, two different seakeeping programs are used: AdFLOW based on Wave Green function method and SWAN based on Rankine panel method. When wave drift force is calculated using SWAN program, not only ship forward speed but also ship lateral speed are considered. By doing this, effects of lateral speed on wave drift force and maneuvering performance in waves are confirmed. The developed method is validated by comparing turning test results in regular waves with existing experimental data. Sensitivities of wave drift force on maneuvering performance are, also, checked.

With desires for safe food, there is growing concern that pesticide spray drift will expose people, plants, and the environment to pesticide residue and potential negative effects thereof. For highly efficient, safe spray application, technologies for measuring the spray drift should be developed and improved with some urgency. This study investigated the applicability of two optical particle counters (OPCs), which are mostly used to measure airborne particle mass concentration, for measurement of airborne pesticide spray drift. Experiments were conducted in a controlled laboratory and an ash tree orchard to evaluate the handiness and accuracy of two OPCs, OPC 1 and OPC 2. The experimental results indicated that the OPC 1 was better applicable to the measurement of spray drift in the field while the use of the OPC 2 was limited due to its narrow range of measurable droplet sizes. The readings of the OPC 1 produced highly accurate results ($R^2=0.9637$) compared to the actual spray drift. For better application of OPCs, this study suggests the OPCs should be positioned properly to inhale spray droplets of the appropriate size and concentration.

Instrument drift is caused by the passage of time, environmental changes, normal wear and tear, debris buildup, sudden shock, vibrations, electromagnetic fields, and improper use. Since it is inappropriate to directly determine the change of the output value as drift during the limited test period, a new algorithm that reflects both zero drift and span drift by giving changes over time to the calibration method of the instrument was proposed. The temperature drift was calculated to be 0.49% for about 60 minutes at 1-minute intervals in the nine-step constant temperature environment through the warming and cooling process.

The steady drift forces on a barge in waves are investigated. The steady drift forces due to a near-field method which is based on direct integration of the pressure acting on the submerged surface of barge are compared with those due to far-field method which is based on the theory of momentum conservation. Numerical results of the linear motions are compared with the experimental and numercal ones which was submitted in the literature. A convergence of the steady drift forces according to the increase of the number of panels which represent the submerged surface are discussed.
Effect of drift current on the first stage of wave generation by wind is studied theoretically. The viewpoint is similar to the one described by Phillips (1957) except that drift current is considered. It is found that inclusion of the effect of the drift current modifies significantly the results obtained by Phillips, particularly the resonance condition and wave spectrum.

Drift design using resizing techniques can be a very practical method in drift design of high-rise buildings since it cannot require sensitivity analysis and structural re-analysis. Resizing techniques has used the cross sectional areas as design variable and supposed that displacement participation factors are inversely proportional to structural weights. Efficiency of resizing techniques based on displacement participation factors may depend on proper selection of sectional properties as design variables. In this study, two different drift design methods with the different sectional properties as design variables are presented and applied to a 20-story structure.

This paper alined at the development of a lateral drift control method that is able to quantitatively control the lateral drift of global node. For this, we applied an efficient partial reanalysis algorithm. By using this algorithm, we could recalculate the displacement and member force of the specific node without reanalyzing the entire structure when member stiffness changes partially. The theoretical concepts of the algorithm are so simple that it is not necessary to solve the complicate differential equation or to repeat the analysis of entire structure. The proposed method calculates the drift contribution of each member for the global displacement according to the variation of section sizes by using the algorithm. Then by changing the member sizes as the order of drift contribution, we could control the lateral drift of global node with a minimum quantity of materials. 20 story braced frame structure system is presented to illustrate the usefulness of proposed method. It is shown that the proposed method is very effective in lateral drift control and the results obtained by proposed method are consistent with those of commercial analysis program.

The objective of this study is to estimate the optimal net twine thickness of drift net for yellow croaker. The filed experiments of the fishing performance were conducted with three kinds of drift net with different monofilament diameters (No.3=0.284mm, No.4=0.330mm, No.5=0.370mm) the total eight times in the southwest coastal sea of Korea. And the physical properties tests on the monofilaments of experimental net were carried out to estimated breaking load and softness in dry and wet conditions, respectively. From the results, the No.3 mono. was the strongest break load per unit area in dry and wet conditions. And the softness showed that the No. 3 mono. was the most soft than another experimental monofilaments. The fishing performance was; the No. 3 drift net showed the most catches. Conversely, the catches of No. 4 and No. 5 drift net showed the half on the catches of No. 3 drift net. Consequently, the diameter of monofilament in the drift net for yellow croaker should carefully choose to consider the economic sides such as the amount of catches and the cost of catches.

Drift design methods using resizing techniques have been presented as a practical drift control methods of high-rise buildings. Most drift design methods using the resizing techniques have adopted the cross-sectional area as the design variables for all structural members in a structure. However, the cross-sectional area is not always governing sectional property for the structural members, but the governing sectional property of each member is dependent on the characteristics of member forces. In this paper, a drift design method using the sectional property related to the governing displacement participation factor as the design variable of each member is presented and applied to the drift design of 20-story steel frame-shear wall system. It can be noted from example test that drift design method considering member characteristics shows similar or somewhat better results in the view point of structural weights and the accuracy of displacement estimation.
The electron collision cross sections for gases have been determined by electron beam and electron swarm method. Especially, measurements by electron swarm method is carried out by using the double shutter drift tube given by T.O.F. and Double shutter method.
