  • This paper describes the feasiblity of recycling sewage dredged soils as fine affrefate. This paper describes the feasibility of recycling sewage dredged soils as fine aggregate. The specific gravity of the dredged soils was smaller than that of sand due to the effect of dredged sludge. However, the grain size distribution of the dredged soils is relative well graded, and the results of the heavy metal concentration from the leaching test of the dredged soils was significantly lower than the requirements of the allowable criteria. Therefore, the effect of recycling of dredged soils on environment the as fine aggregate was negligible. Also, the specific gravity of the dredged and washed soils was similar to that of sand, and the dredged and washed soils for the most part showed lower heavy metal leaching characteristics than those of dredged soils, Also, the results of the study for evaluation the recycling feasibility of dredged and washed soils as fine affrefate. The organic impurity content of the dredged and washed soils was lower than the requirements of the Korean industrial Standards, and the mortar compressive strength using the washdredged soils also met those of the Korean industrial Standards. And, the strengths of the dredged and washed soils were over 95% of those of the NaOH-treated samples. Therefore, it is expected that the dredged soils will be able to be an alternative for fine aggregate.

  • Sediment has been increasingly acknowledged as a carrier in water system and an available contamination. For this reason, dredging of sediment in reservoir to remediate water quality and secure storage capacity is conducted annually. However, disposal of numerous dredged sediment is necessary as a secondary problem. Currently, in Korea, dredged sediment is classified as waste to be reclamated or recycled into sandy soil, however, they are still in trouble because of spacial and environmental problem. Therefore, rather than simple disposal or reuse into sandy soil, it is necessary to research on method to manage main cause of pollution and increase the value as a resource. In this study, we intend to develop a recycle technology for numerous dredged sediment produced by dredging in deteriorated reservoirs using solidificator (stabilizer). To achieve this, we will consider utilization of dredged sediment and evaluation of use possibility as natural recycle by analysis the characteristics of soil-solidificator mixture in terms of physicochemical properties and the mixing ratio between sediment and solidificator.

  • Recently, dewatering process method of high water content materials that utilize geotextile has many applications in variety fields. It is method of dewatering to solid step through self-weight consolidation process after pour sludge using filtering efficiency and dewatering efficiency. Analyzed application of domestic manufactured geotextile tube that can examine physical characteristics of geotextile tube and filling soil and achieve filtering efficiency and dewatering efficiency. Based on the various laboratory and field test results mixing proportions of water and soil is about 6:4 at least. Polypropylene geotextile is more effective for drainage and dewatering function of geotextile tube application.

  • The clay found in the river or in any waste water treatment plant usually have a very high content of water. A large amount of sediments hinder the navigation in river. In waste water treatment plant, there is requirement of settling the thick sludge. These problems are overcome by using rapid means of sedimentation and settling. This paper focus on how method of Electrokinetic sedimentation can be made faster. Sedimentation using Electrokinetic phenomenon has been discussed with varied voltage applied and effect and dose of coagulant in increasing the process. The experimental test has been carried out at water content that are generally present in the case of river and small canals carrying waste water. This paper also focus on different heavy metals concentration during the process and the power aspects of process. A series of experiment were done to support the proposed theory and how a bubble formation could hinder the purpose of experiment.

  • A completion of settling process takes a lot of time for dredged materials of high moisture content, such as contaminated sludge, in landfill site. In general, additives (e.g. flocculants) are used for reducing settling time of such colloidal material, which results in the increase of sludge volume, and hence much space is required in landfill site. This study is to suggest alternative method in order to enhance the settling process of cohesive clayey soils. A number of gravitational sedimentation tests as well as electrokinetic experiments were conducted to investigate the variation of initial moisture content on the settling behaviour of clay slurry. Surface settlement, electric current and local voltage gradient were monitored during the experiment, and moisture content and soil pH were measured after the experiment. From the results, the application of electrokinetics was found to be effective in volume reduction (i.e. increase of settling velocity and decrease of final moisture content) by comparison with gravitational settling process.

  • Occurrences of coastal dredged materials are ever increasing due to port construction, navigational course maintenance and dredging of polluted coastal sediments. Ocean dumping of the coastal dredged materials has become virtually prohibited as London Treaty will be enacted as of the year 2012. It will be necessary to treat and recycle the dredged materials that may carry organic pollutants and heavy metals in a reasonable and effective process: collection of the dredged materials, liquid and solid separation, and treatment of organic compounds and heavy metals. In this study we have developed a continuous bioreactor system that can treat a mixture of silt and particulate organic matter using a microbial consortium (BM-S-1). The steady-state operation conditions were: pH (7.4-7.5), temperature ($16^{\circ}C$), DO (7.5-7.9), and salt concentration (3.4-3.7%). The treatment efficiencies of SCOD, T-N and T-P of the mixture were 95-96%, 92-99%, and 79-97%. The system was also effective in removal of heavy metals such as Zn, Ni, and Cr. Levels of MLSS during three months operation period were 11,000-19,000 mg/L. Interestingly, there was little sludge generated during this period of operation. The augmented microbial consortium seemed to be quite active in the removal of the organic component (30%) present in the dredged material in association with indigenous bacteria. The dominant phyla in the treatment processes were Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes while dominant genii were Marinobacterium, Flaviramulus, Formosa, Alteromonadaceae_uc, Flavobacteriaceae_uc. These results will contribute to a development of a successful bioremediation technology for various coastal and river sediments with a high content of organic matter, inorganic nutrients and heavy metals, leading to a successful reuse of the polluted dredged sediments.

  • Ecological lightweight aggregates were made by using the wastes come from various industrial fields. Wastes were crushed and pulverized by mills and a certain portions of wastes were mixed and formed by pelletizer like small beads. The formed lightweight aggregates were finally sintered with $1125^{\circ}C$/15 min conditions by using rotary kiln. Lightweight concrete sound absorbers were made of ecological lightweight aggregates K73 (Coal bottom ash 70 wt%: Dredged soil 30 wt%) and K631 (Clay 60 wt%: Stone sludge 30 wt%: Spent bleaching clay 10 wt%). For the reference, lightweight concrete sound absorbers made of DL (German made 'L' company LWA) were also made under the same conditions. Sound absorption characteristics were observed and measured according to the kinds of aggregates, water/cement ratio (W/C=20, 25, and 30%), and designed pore rates (V=20, 25, and 30%). The pore rates of the lightweight concrete sound absorber were turned out to be 5 to 10% higher than designed ones. Absorption coefficient of the lightweight concrete sound absorber by using K631 aggregates with W/C=20% and V=25% conditions was 0.88 at 1000 and 3150 Hz from the measurement by the impedance tube.
