  • Pipe drainage is one of the effective slope protein works that can be adopted practically. As fine soil particles are suspended in percolating water, the strainer structure of under drain pipes in necessary to prevent the immediate clogging by soil suspension flow. This study deals with the effective strainer structure of under drain pipes for slope protection. The effective strainer structure of under pipes is the funneled strainer in which pore radius is enlarged toward flow direction. It is designed from the rheological properties of soil suspension flow which prevents the immediate clogging. Experimental results showed that the pipe drain discharge through the funneled strainers was larger than that through the constant pore radius strainers. This theorectial and experimental results indicate that the strainer with enlarged pore radius toward flow direction, is more effective than the strainer with constant pore radius.

  • In special industrial fields such 3s nuclear power plants and chemical plants, it is often necessary to repair system components without plant shutdown or drainage of system having many piping structures which may have hazardous or expensive fluid. A temporary ice plugging method for blocking internal flow is considered as a useful method in that case. According to the pipe freezing guideline of the nuclear power plant, the length of a freezing jacket must be longer than twice of the pipe diameter. However, for applying the ice plugging to short pipes which do not have enough freezing length because of geometrical configuration, it is inevitable to use shorter jacket less than twice of the pipe diameter. In this study, the integrity evaluation for short pipes in the nuclear power plant Is conducted by an experiment and the finite element analysis. From the results, the ice plugging process in short pipes can be safely carried out without any plastic deformation and fracture.

  • It has been noted, in case of the apartments in collective form, the drainage noise from cleaning of toilet causes many problems in the basement and adjacent rooms, mainly hampering the pleasant housing environment. The problems are increasingly raised by civil complaints with the public offices. Therefore, if the drainage noise generates when wash out of toilet bowl is grasped how the characteristics change according to the sorts of drainpipe, it is considered that the establishment of an effective sound insulation countermeasure could be possible when a civil petition against the drainage noise of apartment house is submitted hereafter. On such viewpoint, this study measured and analyzed the characteristics of drainage noise per the type of drainage pipe, according to KS A ISO $1996-1{\sim}3$, with the horizontal branch pipe and riser pipes in the drainage noise experiment chamber which has the characteristics of the anechoic room. In the result, the pipe type with excellent noise reduction function. The result of this study is considered to become available as fundamental data, to take actions on reduction of drainage noise of the ceiling piping method.

  • In Korea, pumping pipe using gravity way by water is most popular method in drainage system. But, it is difficult to repair a drainpipe in this method because the drain pipe diameter is increased as using this method. In this research, we propose a new drainage system. The system aim for an adaptedness with buildings, freedom of plan, construction and renewal in water pipe equipments, etc. The new system is not need of incline of piping, and it uses drainage power that is changed potential energy by high velocity flow as making Siphonage at vertical pipe. Therefore, the diameter of piping can decreased than existing piping system established in the ceiling. Also because connecting position will be located at the lower part, it is changed the potential energy of drainage to the high velocity flow. In addition, drainage will be smooth because the fixture drain is linked by each drain pipes.

  • The pipes used in buildings are generally categorized into metallic or plastic materials. Metal pipes, such as copper and stainless steel pipes, are mainly used for water and hot water supply, and for the heating system. However, plastic pipes made of polyethylene and cross-linked polyethylene are used for floor heating, water drainage, and air vent systems. Usually, plastic pipes have thermal demerits, such as high linear expansion coefficients and bending phenomenon by hot water, although the pipes have several merits of light weight, low price, low thermal conductivity, and the comparatively high workability of metal pipes. Therefore, if those kind of demerits are overcome, plastic pipes can be easily accepted for hot water systems. This research is aimed to evaluate the applicability for vertical heating pipes of a plastic pipe system consisting of electric fusion fitting of a conductive carbon compound and propylene random glass fiber pipe, through measurement of the expansion rate and leakage in summer and winter seasons, in the apartment construction field.

  • A Study was made to improve soil and water temperature and mechanized farming for a wetted paddy under the influence of artesian groundwater located at Samcheon-Dong, Chuncheon City, Kangweon Province. Half perforated PVC drainage pipes were installed in the test paddy to observe temperature change of water and soil. The temperature of the water in the paddy and soil itself raised significantly after the installation of the half perforated PVC pipes. A subsequent improvement of growth and yield of rice on the paddy was achieved. Harvesting operation was also improved with firm ground condition so that cutting and threshing could be done simultaneously within the paddy plot. Following results were obtained from the study. 1.Temperature of the water in a paddy under the influence of artesian groundwater was not changed notably although air temperature was fluctuated during the crop period. Soil temperature was mostly affected by the artesian groundwater. However, the half perforated PVC pipe drainage system made it possible to raise temperature of water and soil remarkably up to the level of optimum farming. 2.Total precipitation was 534.Omm during the crop period of the paddy for 118 days from May 26 to September 20 in 1992. Due to heavy rainfalls of 105.6mm and 109.8mm occurred on August 7 and August 27.1992, respectively, the rate of the artesian groundwater increased to 35 litter per minute with two to three days of time lag. 3.Average rate of the artesian groundwater was 28 litter per minute from the one year of observation. The rate varied by 0.7 to 1.3 times of average during the observation period. Peak rate of the artesian groundwater decreased to 14.5 litter per minute when daily precipitation maintained at the amount of 20 to 30mm for a long time period. Contrarily, it showed a tendency to increase to 35 to 40 litter per minute when heavier precipitation of 50 to l00mm occurred in a short period of three to five days. 4.Growth and yield of Yemyung variety of rice planted on the paddy that was facilitated with a drainage system with half perforated PVC pipes were confirmed at a normal level, while paddy without this perporated drainage system showed abnormal growth with low yield.

  • Most of flooding cases in tunnels are associated with huge inrushes of water due to the fracture zone with very high water head. To find out the causes and countermeasures for flooding cases, a dozen of tunneling cases are studied. Case studies presented here show that if the flooding had been forecasted and pre-drained prior to the tunnel excavation, such accidents could have been prevented. From this observation, we suggest a new horizontal drainage system with pre-investigation and pre-drainage concept. Seepage analyses are performed to analyze the water head reduction effect on the tunnel face by drainage pipes during the construction of subsea tunnels. Drainage system analyses are performed to analyze performance of the drainage system. These analysis results show that the suggested horizontal pre-drainage system provides a clear drainage and water head reducing effect. Finally, the proposed system can be a new alternative to the present water controlling methods applied to subsea tunnels.

  • Pilot wetland reactor systems to test acid mine drainage treatment efficiencies for metals were designed and operated at the Dalsung mine and surveyed the operating problems. pH and Eh (redox potential) were measured in situ and anayses of Cd, Pb, As, Zn, Cu, Fe, Al and Mn were carried out in the laboratory. Maximum metal removal efficiencies of the reactor containing the rice stalks, the cow manure and limestones were that Cu, Zn, Fe, Cd, Al, Mn and Pb were lowered by 98%, 100%, 99%, 100%, 97%, 61% and 100%, respectively and at that time the pH and Eh of the effluents from the reactor were 6 and about -300 mV. However, the redox potential was raised and removal of metal elements except aluminium was decreased with operation time. It suggests that the reduced condition is very important for the metal removal. During the operation, problems such as scaling in pipes and volume change of the substrate within the reactor occurred, which were preventing the flow of main drainage in pipes and reactor.

  • The computation of normal depth is very important for the design of channel and the analysis of water flow. Drainage pipe generally has the shape of curvature like circular or U-type, which is different from artificial triangular or rectangular channel. In this case, the computation of normal depth or the derivation of equations is very difficult because the change of hydraulic radius and area versus depth is not simple. If the ratio of the area to the diameter, or the hydraulic radius to the diameter of pipe is expressed as the water depth to the diameter of pipe by power law, however, the process of computing normal depth becomes relatively simple, and explicit equations can be obtained. In the present study, developed are the explicit normal depth equations for circular and U-type pipes, and the normal depth equation associated with Hagen (Manning) equation and friction factor equation of smooth turbulent flow by power law is also proposed because of its wide usage in engineering design.
