Lock-on characteristics of flow around a circular cylinder oscillating rotationally with a relatively high forcing frequency have been investigated experimentally. Dominant governing parameters are Reynolds number (Re), angular amplitude of oscillation (${\theta}_A$), and frequency ratio $F_R=f_f/f_n,\;where\;f_f$ is a forcing frequency and $f_n$ is a natural frequency of vortex shedding. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of $Re=4.14{\times}10^3,\;{\pi}/90{\leq}{\theta_A}{\leq}{\pi}/3,\;and\;F_R=1.0$. The effect of this active flow control technique on the lock-on flow characteristics of the cylinder wake was evaluated with wake velocity measurements and spectral analysis of hot-wire signals. The rotational oscillation modifies the flow structure of near wake significantly. The lock-on phenomenon always occurs at $F_R=1.0$, regardless of the angular amplitude ${\theta}_A$. In addition, when the angular amplitude is less than a certain value, the lock-on characteristics appear only at $F_R=1.0$,. The range of lock-on phenomena expands and vortex formation length is decreased, as the angular amplitude increases. The rotational oscillation create a small-scale vortex structure in the region just near the cylinder surface. At ${\theta}_A=60^{\circ}$, the drag coefficient was reduced about $43.7\%$ at maximum.
Flow interference is investigated between two tripped cylinders of identical diameter D at stagger angle ${\alpha}=0^{\circ}{\sim}180^{\circ}$ and gap spacing ratio $P^*$ (= P/D) = 0.1 ~ 5, where ${\alpha}$ is the angle between the freestream velocity and the line connecting the cylinder centers, and P is the gap width between the cylinders. Two tripwires, each of diameter 0.1D, were attached on each cylinder at azimuthal angle ${\beta}={\pm}30^{\circ}$, respectively. Time-mean drag coefficient ($C_D$) and fluctuating drag ($C_{Df}$) and lift ($C_{Lf}$) coefficients on the two tripped cylinders were measured and compared with those on plain cylinders. We also conducted surface pressure measurements to assimilate the fluid dynamics around the cylinders. $C_D$, $C_{Df}$ and $C_{Lf}$ all for the plain cylinders are strong function of ${\alpha}$ and $P^*$ due to strong mutual interference between the cylinders, connected to six interactions (Alam and Meyer 2011), namely boundary layer and cylinder, shear-layer/wake and cylinder, shear layer and shear layer, vortex and cylinder, vortex and shear layer, and vortex and vortex interactions. $C_D$, $C_{Df}$ and $C_{Lf}$ are very large for vortex and cylinder, vortex and shear layer, and vortex and vortex interactions, i.e., the interactions where vortex is involved. On the other hand, the interference as well as the strong interactions involving vortices is suppressed for the tripped cylinders, resulting in insignificant variations in $C_D$, $C_{Df}$ and $C_{Lf}$ with ${\alpha}$ and $P^*$. In most of the (${\alpha}$, $P^*$ ) region, the suppressions in $C_D$, $C_{Df}$ and $C_{Lf}$ are about 58%, 65% and 85%, respectively, with maximum suppressions 60%, 80% and 90%.

To verify the effect of inner- and outer-stage gas jets, a shear coaxial injector was designed to analyze the axial velocity profile and breakup phenomenon with an increase in the measurement distance. When the measurement position was increased to Z/d=100, the axial flow showed a fully developed shape due to the momentum transfer, aerodynamic drag effect, and viscous mixing. An inner gas injection, which induces a higher momentum flux ratio near the nozzle, produces the greater shear force on atomization than an outer gas injection. Inner- and Outer-stage gas injection do not affect the mixing between the inner and outer gas flow below Z/d=5. The experiment results showed that the main effect of liquid jet breakup was governed by the gas jet of an inner stage. As the nozzle exit of the outer-stage was located far from the liquid column, shear force and turbulence breaking up of the liquid jets do not fully affect the liquid column. In the case of an inner-stage gas injection momentum flux ratio within 0.84, with the increase in the outer gas momentum flux ratio, the SMD decreases. However, at an inner-stage gas jet momentum flux ratio over 1.38, the SMD shows the similar distribution.

A comparative study between a wind tunnel test and an XFOIL simulation looking at the aerodynamic performance of the airfoil for MW-class wind turbine was conducted for validation in the design stage. Tests are carried out for 21% and 30% thickness-ratio airfoils developed for 5 ~ 10 MW offshore wind turbine and the results are compared with the output from the XFOIL simulation at Reynolds number $1.0{\times}10^7$. The test is performed at a free-stream velocity of 50 m/s, corresponding to a Reynolds number of $2.2{\times}10^6$ based on the chord. Surface roughness is simulated using a zig-zag tape. Discrepancies between the results of the test and the XFOIL analysis are found, however, meaningful data for surface pressure distribution, basic performance and surface roughness effect are obtained from the tests, while useful lift-to-drag ratio data is found by the XFOIL simulation.

Birds and insects flap their wings to fly in the air and they can change their wing motions to do steering and maneuvering. Therefore, we created various wing motions with the parameters which affected flapping motion and evaluated the aerodynamic characteristics about those cases in this study. As the wing rotational velocity was fast and the rotational timing was advanced, the measured aerodynamic forces showed drastic increase near the end of stroke. The mean lift coefficient was increased until angle of attack of $50^{\circ}$ and showed the maximum value of 1.0. The maximum mean lift to drag ratio took place at angle of attack of $20^{\circ}$. Flow fields were also visualized around the wing using particle image velocimetry (PIV). From the flow visualization, leading-edge vortex was not shed at mid-stroke until angle of attack of $50^{\circ}$. But it was begun to shed at angle of attack of $60^{\circ}$.
To develop the efficient numerical optimization method for the design of an airfoil, an evaluation of various methods coupled with two-dimensional Naviev-Stokes analysis is presented. Simplex method and Hook-Jeeves method we used as direct search methods, and steepest descent method, conjugate gradient method and DFP method are used as indirect search methods and are tested to determine the search direction. To determine the moving distance, the golden section method and cubic interpolation method are tested. The finite volume method is used to discretize two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, and SIMPLEC algorithm is used for a velocity-pressure correction method. For the optimal design of two-dimensional airfoil, maximum thickness, maximum ordinate of camber line and chordwise position of maximum ordinate are chosen as design variables, and the ratio of drag coefficient to lift coefficient is selected as an objective function. From the results, it is found that conjugate gradient method and cubic interpolation method are the most efficient for the determination of search direction and the moving distance, respectively.
The present study numerically investigated the influence of the waveform distribution on the tsunami-vegetation interaction using a non-reflected wave generation system for various tsunami waveforms in a two-dimensional numerical wave tank. First, it was possible to determine the wave attenuation mechanism due to the tsunami-vegetation interaction from the spatial waveform, flow field, vorticity field, and wave height distribution. The combination of fluid resistance in the vegetation and a large gap and creates a vortex according to the flow velocity difference in and out of the vegetation zone. Thus, the energy of a tsunami was increasingly reduced, resulting in a gradual reduction in wave height. Compared to existing approximation theories, the double volumetric ratio of the waveform increased the reflection coefficient of the tsunami-vegetation interaction by 34%, while decreasing the transfer coefficient and energy attenuation coefficient by 25% and 13%, respectively. Therefore, the hydraulic characteristics of a tsunami is highly likely to be underestimated if the solitary wave of the approximation theory is applied for the tsunami.
In this work, we numerically investigate the effect of viscoelasticity on 2D laminar vortex dynamics in flows past a single rotating cylinder for rotational rates $0{\leq}{\alpha}{\leq}5$ (the rotational rate ex is defined by the ratio of the circumferential rotating velocity to free stream velocity) at Re=100, in which the vortex shedding has been predicted to occur in literature for Newtonian fluids. The objective of the present research is to develop a promising technique to fully suppress the vortex shedding past a bluff body by rotating a cylinder and controlling fluid elasticity. The predicted vortex dynamics with the present method is consistent with the previous works for Newtonian flows past a rotating cylinder. We also verified our method by comparing our data with the literature in the case of viscoelastic flow past a non-rotating cylinder. For $0{\leq}{\alpha}{\leq}1.8$, the frequency of vortex shedding slightly decreases but the fluctuation of drag and lift coefficient significantly decreases with increasing fluid elasticity. We observe that the vortex shedding of viscoelastic flow disappears at lower ${\alpha}$ than the Newtonian case. At ${\alpha}$=5, the relationship between the frequency of vortex shedding and Weissenberg number (Wi) is predicted to be non-monotonic and have a minimum around Wi=0.25. The vortex shedding finally disappears over critical Wi number. The present results suggest that the vortex shedding in the flow around a rotating cylinder can be more effectively suppressed for viscoelastic fluids than Newtonian fluids.

The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of heat exchangers with louver fins were experimentally investigated. The samples had small fin pitches (1.0 mm to 1.4 mm), and experiments were conducted up to a very low frontal air velocity (as low as 0.3 m/s). At a certain Reynolds number (critical Reynolds number), the flattening of the heat transfer coefficient curve was observed. The critical Reynolds number was insensitive to the louver angle, and decreased as the louver pitch to fin pitch ratio (L$_{p}$F$_{p}$) decreased. Existing correlations on the critical Reynolds number did not adequately predict the data. It is suggested that, for proper assessment of the heat transfer behavior, the louver pattern in addition to the flow characterization need to be considered. The heat transfer coefficient increased as the fin pitch decreased. At low Reynolds numbers, however, the trend was reversed. Possible explanation is provided considering the louver pattern between neighboring fins. Different from the heat transfer coefficient, the friction factor did not show the flattening characteristic. The reason may be attributed to the form drag by louvers, which offsets the decreased skin friction at a low Reynolds number. The friction factor increased as the fin pitch decreased and the louver angle increased. A new correlation predicted 92% of the heat transfer coefficient and 90% of the friction factor within $\pm$10%.10%.
Vortex-induced vibrations of a yawed flexible cylinder near a plane boundary are numerically investigated at a Reynolds number Ren= 500 based on normal component of freestream velocity. Free to oscillate in the in-line and cross-flow directions, the cylinder with an aspect ratio of 25 is pinned-pinned at both ends at a fixed wall-cylinder gap ratio G/D = 0.8, where D is the cylinder diameter. The cylinder yaw angle (α) is varied from 0° to 60° with an increment of 15°. The main focus is given on the influence of α on structural vibrations, flow patterns, hydrodynamic forces, and IP (Independence Principle) validity. The vortex shedding pattern, contingent on α, is parallel at α=0°, negatively-yawed at α ≤ 15° and positively-yawed at α ≥ 30°. In the negatively- and positively-yawed vortex shedding patterns, the inclination direction of the spanwise vortex rows is in the opposite and same directions of α, respectively. Both in-line and cross-flow vibration amplitudes are symmetric to the midspan, regardless of α. The RMS lift coefficient CL,rms exhibits asymmetry along the span when α ≠ 0°, maximum CL,rms occurring on the lower and upper halves of the cylinder for negatively- and positively-yawed vortex shedding patterns, respectively. The IP is well followed in predicting the vibration amplitudes and drag forces for α ≤ 45° while invalid in predicting lift forces for α ≥ 30°. The vortex-shedding frequency and the vibration frequency are well predicted for α = 0° - 60° examined.
