Survey evaluation of thermal boundary condition in the inside and outside of double skin facade

  • Purpose: Double skin facade is a representative advantageous passive technology of building skin in the aspect of energy saving and environment improvement, reduces heat loss with buffer space in winter season and enhances indoor air and comfort of residents by activating natural ventilation in mid-season. However, in summer season, temperature increase in the intermediate space due to solar energy from exterior transparent skin could be a potential problem; also, relatively weak buoyancy of air caused by low density difference between double-skin facade could increase cooling load as air of intermediate space in high temperature hangs. However, proof data is insufficient to objectify such phenomenon. Method: In this study, researchers surveyed air temperature of intermediate space and airflow and diagnosed its cause targeting on applied multistory facade in the building which gives thermal uncomfort to residents. Also, the researchers produced Solar-air heat transfer coefficient meter, measured thermal boundary condition of double-skin facade, and presented the result of measurement as an objectified verification material regarding overheating phenomenon in the intermediate space of double-skin facade in summer season. Result: Inefficient condition was verified that total heat increases and overheating due to insufficient natural ventilation in multistory facade. In addition, logic behind preceding research was objectified and verified regarding high temperature phenomenon in the intermediate space which could increase cooling load in summer season.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the natural ventilation performance for variable external wind speed as a preliminary step to determining the seasonal operating modes of the Double-skin Facade System applied to apartment buildings. For this purpose, two simulation programs are used to compare the Double-Skin Facade System with the Double Sash Window. First, TAS is used to plan a schedule for natural ventilation during the intermediate season and to analyze the cooling loads. Second, CFD is used for a more detailed airflow analysis on a typical floor plan of the model building. The results of the simulations on natural ventilation performance show that the Double-Skin Facade System can reduce the cooling load by 10.5% compared to the Double Sash Window.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the sound insulation performance and present fundamental data for sound insulation plan about open and close windows of inner facade and outer facade of Double-skin Facade system applied to multi-story type. The Headquarter of Green Building and the Energy Saving Building in the Korea Institute of Energy Research was selected for experiment. Measurement method which are specified in the Korea Standard 2235 were selected for this study. As the result of this study, 1) Sound insulation performance of Multi-layer type of Double-skin Facades is very excellent about outdoor noise. 2) Vertical level is higher, it shows that more decreases sound pressure level.

  • In this study, to present the data in the internal thermal condition of Double skin facade were measured internal temperature and inlet and outlet openings wind speed of double skin facade. Measurements were similar to temperatures in the upper double skin facade. Especially in summer, temperature stratification is through to be unfulfilled seamlessly despite inlet and outlet openings open. Double skin facade inlet and outlet openings of the air flow rate was slower outlet openings of the air flow rate than inlet openings of the air flow rate.

  • Purpose : Improvement of indoor thermal comfort and reduction of the energy consumption in building can be obtained by applying a double skin facade system. In order to achieve effectively this purpose, design team would have to perform easy and appropriate performance analysis for making better design decision during the design process. Method : This paper focus on the natural ventilation performance of a multi-story type double skin facade with main causes which are pressure difference according to the wind and temperature difference between indoor and outdoor (Buoyancy Effect). Using this main causes, the natural ventilation ratio of wind effect-to-buoyancy effect in cavity of multi-story type double skin facade were analyzed through the performance analysis results of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation. Result : When the wind velocity was 2m/s, the ventilation rate in the cavity was highest. If wind velocity was slower than 2m/s wind velocity, buoyancy effect has more influence on the ventilation rate in the cavity, and if wind velocity was faster than 2m/s wind velocity, wind effect has more influence on the ventilation rate in the cavity.

Evaluation of the effect of smart façade systems in reducing dynamic response of structures subjected to seismic loads

  • To date the engineering community has seen facade systems as non-structural elements with high aesthetic value and a barrier between the outdoor and indoor environments. The role of facades in energy use in a building has also been recognized and the industry is also witnessing the emergence of many energy efficient facade systems. This paper will focus on using exterior skin of the double skin facade system as a dissipative movable element during earthquake excitation. The main aim of this study is to investigate the potential of the facade system to act as a damper system to reduce earthquake-induced vibration of the primary structure. Unlike traditional mass dampers, which are usually placed at the top level of structures, the movable/smart double skin facade systems are distributed throughout the entire height of building structures. The outer skin is moveable and can act as a multi tuned mass dampers (MTMDs) that move and dissipate energy during strong earthquake motions. In this paper, using a three dimensional 10-storey building structure as the example, it is shown that with optimal choice of materials for stiffness and damping of brackets connecting the two skins, a substantial portion of earthquake induced vibration energy can be dissipated which leads to avoiding expensive ductile seismic designs. It is shown that the engineering demand parameters (EDPs) for a low-rise building structures subjected to moderate to severe earthquakes can be substantially reduced by introduction of a smart designed double skin system.

화재시뮬레이션(FDS)을 이용한 Double Skin 연소확대 위험에 관한 고찰 (Analysis for Fire Spread through Double Skin Facade System with FDS)

  • 본 연구는 Double Skin System의 화재 전파 위험성을 전산유체역학모델인 FDS를 이용하여 평가하였다. 화재모델링을 구현하기 위해 오피스 용도의 단위 구획공간을 화재지역으로 선정하였으며, 화재시나리오는 외창으로의 연소확대 위험 분석을 위하여 일반적으로 많이 설치되는 시스템조건들을 Case로 선정하여 분석하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 일반적으로 많이 사용되는 Double Skin System의 설치 간격에 따른 건물상층부로의 화재확대 위험성을 평가하고, 이에 따른 방화대책 등을 수립하는데 있다. 해석 결과, 더블스킨 중간층 간격이 넓을수록 상부층으로 연소확대 영향이 작은 것을 확인할 수 있었으며, 중간층 간격이 1m 미만인 경우는 발화층 상부 2개층으로 연소확대가 예상되므로 층간연소 확대 방지 시스템이 요구됨을 알 수 있다.

이중외피 구조 건축물의 피난성능 개선에 관한 연구 (Study Improvement of the Evacuation Performance in a Double-Skin Structure)

  • 본 논문은 피난 안전성 평가를 통해 이중외피 구조가 적용된 건축물에서의 피난 성능 개선방안을 제시하고자 한다. 이중외피 구조가 적용된 건축물은 화재 발생시 굴뚝효과로 인한 상층 연소확대 현상이 빠르고 그 특성이 각 구조별로 다른 특성을 갖고 있으며 설계 및 제도적 기준 또한 미비하여 일반 건축물에 비해 피난 안전성을 확보하기 어렵다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 10층의 단일 피난계단이 적용된 이중외피 건축물로 가상의 모델링을 구성하였으며, 피난 성능을 개선하기 위한 방안으로 피난 완료시점을 옥외로의 탈출까지로 변경하고, 각 구조별 위험도를 고려한 경보방식을 제안하였다. 그 결과 기존의 경보방식과 비교하여 박스형은 약 26.4%, 복도형은 약 29.1%, 샤프트-박스형은 약 23.4%, 전면형은 약 26.3%의 피난 성능이 개선되었고, 전층의 재실자의 안전을 확보 할 수 있었다.

박스형 이중외피와 커튼월 창호의 난방기 열적성능 비교 (A Study on thermal performance of box type double skin facade and curtain wall in heating period)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the thermal of DFS(double Facade System) and curtain wall in the heating period. The physical difference between curtain wall and double facade on thermal performance has been tested at the newly constructed laboratory, which can turn $360^{\circ}$ to confirm the characteristic of a facade with the various directions. This study divide on 'ventilated, airtight' and 'heated or unheated' conditions from the CASE 1, 2, 3, 4. The results showed thermal performance of double facade system which has been better than curtain wall. The heating energy of DFS reduced $8%{\sim}10%$ of energy consumption. comparable to SFS in experemted results. In view of the researching results so far achieved, the research came to a conclusion, that the curtain wall can save the energy in the heating period than a curtain wall.

이중외피 중공층의 열성능을 고려한 블라인드 위치 계획 (Planning the Blind Position Considering Thermal Performance in the Intermediate Space of Double-Skin Facade)

  • The blinds in the intermediate space are installed to block the direct solar radiation. As the blind divide the airflow of intermediate space into two, thermal performance of Double-Skin Facade (DSF) are affected by the blind position. Therefore blind position should be planed with careful consideration in order to maximize the thermal performance of DSF. In this study, CFD was peformed to analyze the effect of blind position in multistory-type DSF in variation of other DSF elements. The simulation results showed that the case with narrow depth of intermediate space and outlet on upper side of outer-facade, it is profitable to place blind as close as possible to the outer-facade. In the other cases, the blind should maintain 0.15 m distance from outer-facade.
