  • This paper proposes a roll rate estimation method for spinning vehicles. The carrier phase and frequency variations caused by spinning of vehicles are observed and the roll rate estimator is designed on the observation. The roll rate estimator consists of phase detector and zero crossing counter. The phase detector computes phase variation using in-phase and quadrature value from the correlator. By using zero crossing counter, the roll rate can be estimated since the output of phase detector is changed in proportion to the roll rate. Experiment a results show that estimated roll rate error is smaller than 0.0578Hz.

  • The IEEE 802.11p-based wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE) [1] communication is a method used exclusively for wireless communication on the road. This technique enables information sharing not only among moving vehicles but also between vehicles and infrastructure [2]. As part of WAVE communication, data is transmitted to and from vehicles in motion; in this case, it is difficult to determine the channel accurately in an outdoor environment owing to the Doppler shift [3]. This paper proposes a new channel estimation scheme for enhancing the reception performance of the IEEE 802.11p-based WAVE system. The proposed technique obtains the initial channel value by estimating the least square in the time domain by inserting a pilot signal for channel estimation into the IEEE 802.11p virtual subcarrier. Subsequently, a least mean square algorithm is applied to the initial channel value to update the estimated channel value. The simulation results obtained using the proposed channel estimation technique confirm its remarkable efficiency.

  • In this paper, we present an improved channel estimation method for orthogonal frequency division multipexing systems using pilot symbol assisted modulation(PSAM). Conventional linear minimum mean square error(LMMSE) channel estimation method uses only pilot symbols for channel estimation. So, as the fading channel varies rapidly, the system performance is degraded. The basic idea of the proposed scheme is that we firstly estimate channel coefficients at the middle point between two pilot symbols and then compute the channel attenuation by using LMMSE method. Superior performance achieved with the proposed method is illustrated by simulation experiments with the Doppler frequency of 36Hz and 185Hz in comparison with conventional LMMSE channel estimator.

  • An underwater positioning method that can be applied to structures for underwater construction is being developed at the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology. The method uses an extended Kalman filter (EKF) based on an inertial navigation system for precise and continuous position estimation. The observation matrix was configured to be variable in order to apply asynchronous measured sensor data in the correction step of the EKF. A Doppler velocity logger (DVL) can acquire signals only when attached to the bottom of an underwater structure, and it is difficult to install and recover. Therefore, a complex sensor device for underwater structure attachment was developed without a DVL in consideration of an underwater construction environment, installation location, system operation convenience, etc.. Its performance was verified through a water tank test. The results are the measured underwater position using an ultra-short baseline, the estimated position using only a position vector, and the estimated position using position/velocity vectors. The results were compared and evaluated using the circular error probability (CEP). As a result, the CEP of the USBL alone was 0.02 m, the CEP of the position estimation with only the position vector corrected was 3.76 m, and the CEP of the position estimation with the position and velocity vectors corrected was 0.06 m. Through this research, it was confirmed that stable underwater positioning can be carried out using asynchronous sensors without a DVL.

  • Pilot symbol-based coherent detection is used to increase the link capacity in CDMA systems. In order to detect data efficiently, data signals must be compensated with channel estimation values obtained by using pilot symbols. Many channel estimation schemes were published in previous literatures. However, most of these schemes have performance deterioration in fast fading because of using average vaules of several timeslots. In this paper, we propose an improved channel estimation scheme which is efficient in fast fading and also operates in slow fading satisfactorily. Through computer simulation we show that the proposed scheme has better performance than other schemes in terms of both MSE and BER in fast fading and show robustness for variation in Doppler frequencies.

  • Doubly-selective channel estimator for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) systems is proposed in this paper. Based on the generalized complex exponential basis expansion model(GCE-BEM), we describe the time-variant channel with time-invariant coefficients over multiple OFDM blocks. The time variation of the channel destroys the orthogonality between subcarriers, and the resulting channel matrix in the frequency domain is no longer diagonal, but the main interference comes from the near subcarriers. Based on this, we propose a channel estimator with low pilot ratio. We first develop a least-square(LS) estimator under the assumption that only the maximum Doppler frequency and the channel order are known at the receiver, and then verify that the correlation matrix of inter-channel interference(ICI) is a scaled identity matrix based on which we derive an optimal pilot insertion scheme for the LS estimator in the sense of minimum mean square error. The proposed estimator has the advantages of low pilot ratio and robustness against inter-carrier interference.

  • I evaluate the BER performance of OFDM systems in frequency selective Doppler time variant fading channels, considering the pilot patterns for channel estimation. The performance of the systems is degraded due to channel estimation error. For the reduction of performance degradation in acceptable level, the optimum distance of pilot symbols in pilot pattern is 5 subcarriers in frequency domain and 6 OFDM block in time domain.

  • In this paper, we present an improved channel estimation method for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems using pilot-symbol-aided parameter estimation. Conventional linear minimum mean square error(LMMSE) channel estimation method uses only pilot symbols for channel estimation. So, as the fading channel varies rapidly, a performance is decreased. We proposed a channel estimation method, which estimates channel attenuation in the middle of pilots using pilot symbols and then estimates the whole channel attenuation with pilots and estimated channel attenuation. Compared with conventional LMMSE channel estimation method, the proposed method is significantly robust in a rapid fading channel with high Doppler frequency and delay spread.
