In this paper, we present a performance analysis and design and implementation results of a 2.4 GHz bio-radar system that can detect human heartbeat and respiration signals. In order to design a 2.4 GHz bio-radar system qualitatively, we investigate the electromagnetic properties of human tissues and calculate the target SNR of demodulation output with respect to distance. The target SNR is defined by the 90 % success ratio for detecting heartbeat signal. With this target SNR value, the performance and link budget of the bio-radar system is simulated using MATLAB. Using this link budget results, the direct conversion receiver is designed and Implemented in 4 layer printed circuit board(PCB). With output power of 0 dBm and 5 Hz bandwidth, 80 % success ratio of 50 cm is measured. Measurement results show a good agreement with simulation results.

In this paper, we present the basic design results for high-resolution radar development at S-band frequency that can precisely measure the miss distance between two targets. The basic system requirement is proposed for the design of a 3.5 GHz linear frequency-modulated (LFM) radar with maximum detection distance and distance resolution of 2 km and 1 m, respectively, and the specifications of each module are determined using the radar equation. Our calculations revealed a signal-to-noise ratio ${\geq}30dB$ with a bandwidth of 150 MHz, transmission power of 43 dBm for the power amplifier, gain of 26 dBi for the antenna, noise figure of 8 dB, and radar cross-section of $1m^2$ at a target distance of 2 km from the radar. Based on the calculation results and the theory and method of LFM radar design, the hardware was designed using software defined radar technology. The results of the subsequent field test are presented that prove that the designed radar system satisfies the requirements.

Comparison between the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM)/Precipitation Radar(PR) and the C-band doppler radar at Cheju, Kunsan and Pusan, operated by the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA), is conducted for validation of the surface precipitation structure, and for calibration of KMA radar instrument. Data used in validation was selected for seven rain events in the south region of about $36^{\circ}N$ and at TRMM overflight in Korea, during the summer season of 2000. Quantitatively comparing radar reflectivities from two different platforms that have different view angles, bandwidths and frequencies is a challenging task. For the comparison, the precipitation patterns are projected on the same area for TRMM PR. Through the comparison, it is realized that the reflectivity from ground-based radar is under estimated, compared to TRMM/PR observations. We discuss that is underestimation may be produced by many factors(system performance, topography, etc).

This paper improves the effects of clustered OFCDM scheme considering the frequency diversity effect over a frequency selective fading channel. In OFCDM with frequency domain spreading compared to OFDM, we can increase uncorrelated symbols by frequency allocation method of correspondent symbols over the same antenna and different antenna after spreading. The simulation results show that the performance of proposed system is improved by approximately 4 dB in ${\sigma}=0.02{\mu}sec$, the performance is improved by approximately 2.5dB in large delay spread in a 12-path Rayleigh fading channel with overall the root mean squared delay spread and the maximum Doppler frequency of 20 Hz. Also, the required average received Eb/No at the average BER of $10^{-3}$ by optimum method is improved by approximately 2.0 dB, compared to that of STA-OFCDM with frequency rearrange. The new method does not require any bandwidth expansion any feedback from the receiver to the transmitter and its computation complexity is similar to clustered OFCDM.

Time-variant sea surface causes a forward scattering and Doppler spreading in received signal on underwater acoustic communication system. This results in time-varying amplitude, frequency and phase variation of the received signal. In such a way the channel coherence bandwidth and fading feature also change with time. Consequently, the system performance is degraded and high-speed coherent digital communication is disrupted. In this paper, quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) performance is examined in two different sea surface conditions. The impact of sea surface scattering on performance is analyzed on basis of the channel impulse response and temporal coherence using linear frequency modulation (LFM) signal. The impulse response and the temporal coherence of the rough sea surface condition were more unstable and less than that of the calm sea surface condition, respectively. By relating these with time variant envelope, amplitude and phase of received signal, it was found that the bit error rate (BER) of QPSK are closely related to time variation of sea surface state.
Underwater communication is difficult to increase the communication capacity because the carrier frequency is lower than that of radio communications on land. This is limited to the bandwidth of the signal under the influence of the characteristics of an ocean medium. As the high transmission speed and large transmission capacity have become necessary in the limited frequency range, the studies on MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) communication have been actively carried out. The performance of the MIMO communication is lower than that of the SIMO (Single Input Multiple Output) communication because cross-talk occurs due to multiusers along with inter symbol interference resulting from the channel characteristics such as delay spread and doppler spread. Although the adaptive equalizer considering multi-channels is used to mitigate the influence of the cross-talk, the algorithm is normally complicated. In this paper, time reversal mirror technique with the characteristic of a self-equalization will be applied to simplify the compensation algorithm and relieve the cross-talk in order to improve the communication performance when the signal transmitted from two channels is received over interference on one channel in the same time. In addition, the performance of the MIMO communication based on the time reversal mirror is verified using data from the SAVEX15(Shallow-water Acoustic Variability Experiment 2015) conducted at the northern area of East China Sea in May 2015.
This paper presents an idea of ScanSAR image formation. For image formation of ScanSAR that utilizes the burst mode for raw signal acquisition, most conventional single burst methods essentially require a step of azimuth stitching which contributes to radiometric and phase distortions to some extent. Time-domain cross correlation could replace SPECAN which is most popularly used for ScanSAR processing. The core idea of the proposed method is that it is possible to relieve the necessity of azimuth stitching by an extension of Doppler bandwidth of the reference function to the burst cycle period. Performance of the proposed method was evaluated by applying it to the raw signals acquired by a spaceborne SAR system, and results satisfied all image quality requirements including 3 dB width, peak-to-sidelobe ratio (PSLR), compression ratio, speckle noise, etc. Image quality of ScanSAR is inferior to that of Stripmap in all aspects. However, it is also possible to improve the quality of ScanSAR image competitive to that of Stripmap if focused on a certain parameter while reduced qualities of other parameters. Thus, it is necessary for a ScanSAR processor to offer a great degree of flexibility complying with different requirements for different applications and techniques.
In order to estimate the radial speed of an underwater object so-called target with active sonar, Continuous Wave (CW) pulse is generally used, but if a target is slow and at near distance, it is not easy to estimate the radial velocity of the target due to acoustic reverberation in the ocean. In 2017, Wang et al. utilized broadband signal of two Hyperbolic Frequency Modulation (HFM) pulses, which is known as a doppler-invariant pulse, with equal frequency band and in opposite sweep directions to overcome this problem and successfully estimate the radial speed of slow-moving nearby target. They demonstrated the estimation of the radial velocity with computer simulation using the parameters of two HFM starting time differences and receiving times. However, for it uses two HFM pulses with equal frequency, cross-correlation between the two pulses negatively affect the detection performance. To mitigate this cross-correlation effect, we suggest using two different band HFM with the opposite sweep directions. In this paper, a method of radial velocity estimation is derived and simulated using two HFM pulses with the pulse length of 1 second and bandwidth of 400 Hz. Applying the suggested method, the radial velocity was estimated with approximately 6 % of relative error in the simulation.
Functional ultrasound imaging, such as elasticity imaging and micro-blood flow Doppler imaging, enhances diagnostic capability by providing useful mechanical and functional information about tissues. However, the implementation of functional ultrasound imaging poses limitations such as the storage of vast amounts of data in Radio Frequency (RF) data acquisition and processing. In this paper, we propose a sub-Nyquist approach that reduces the amount of acquired axial samples for efficient shear-wave elasticity imaging. The proposed method acquires data at a sampling rate one-third lower than the conventional Nyquist sampling rate and tracks shear-wave signals through RF signals reconstructed using band-pass filtering-based interpolation. In this approach, the RF signal is assumed to have a fractional bandwidth of 67 %. To validate the approach, we reconstruct the shear-wave velocity images using shear-wave tracking data obtained by conventional and proposed approaches, and compare the group velocity, contrast-to-noise ratio, and structural similarity index measurement. We qualitatively and quantitatively demonstrate the potential of sub-Nyquist sampling-based shear-wave elasticity imaging, indicating that our approach could be practically useful in three-dimensional shear-wave elasticity imaging, where a massive amount of ultrasound data is required.
