Methods : The 38 patients who had a diagnosis of lumbago were observed from June 2002 to February 2003, were divided into two classes ; the A group was 19 cases practised Dong-Si acupuncture with common acupuncture, B group 19 cases only common acupuncture. Then the time of 2 weaks after, I compared Improvement index, Visual analog scale, DITI gap of two groups. Results : In Improvement Index, Group A is $0.4442{\pm}0.1165$ and Group B is $0.3061{\pm}0.1402$. So Group A is thought to be significant(P=0.002). In VAS(visual analogue scale), Group A is $7.4737{\pm}1.1239$ and Group B is $6.3684{\pm}1.0116$. So Group A is thought to be significant(P=0.003). In DITI, temperature differance of Group A is lower than Group B after treatment.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to present clinical utility of therapeutic exercise on the neck and shoulder parts based on the movement system impairment syndrome(MSIS) as Dong-Qi therapy of the Dong-Si Acupuncture and was to examine which Dong-Si acupoints were most effective and non-invasive when performing therapeutic exercise of the MSIS. Methods : Totally eight therapeutic exercises correspondent to eight neck and shoulder MSIS were summarized and tabulated from the Diagnosis and Treatment of Movement Impairment Syndrome and Movement System Impairment Syndromes Of The Extremities, Cervical and Thoracic Spines by Sahrmann SA. Together with the MSIS summaries, acupuncture points and Dong-Qi therapy were summarized and tabulated from Yangweijiequanji 1 and Yangweijiequanji 2 by Yangweijie. According to the posture and movement of the MSIS exercise, effective and non-invasive acupoints were selected. Thereafter, clinical pilot study which five normal volunteers participated in were performed to examine whether these acupoints resulted in any side effects of acupuncture therapy such as pain and distortion of the needle during the MSIS exercises. Results : Through clinical pilot study, ZhongZi, ZhongXian, ZhengJin, ZhengZong and MuLiu in a sitting position, and HuaGuYi, ZhongZi and ZhongXian in a supine position were finally determined as safe and non-invasive Dong-Si acupoints to treat cervical pain. In terms of shoulder pain, ZuQianJin, ZuWuJin, HuaGuEr and JianZhong in a supine position, SiHuaZhong, ZuQianJin, ZuWuJin, QuLing, JianZhong, ShenGuan and JiuLi in a standing position, and ZuQianJin, ZuWuJin, HuaGuEr, QuLing and JianZhong in a prone position were finally accepted as safe and non-invasive Dong-Si acupoints. Conclusion : It is concluded that Dong-Si acupoints can be safely and non-invasively used together with therapeutic exercises of the MSIS to treat cervical and shoulder pains.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of pressing at Kyeun-Jung$(G_{21})$, Gok-Ji$(LI_{11})$ and Zok-Sam-Li$(S_{36})$ with Si-acupuncture on the decreasing of blood pressure and headache on the stroke patients. Methods : This study was one-group pretest-posttest experimental design. The subjects of this study were 30 patients who were hospitalized in stroke center of hospital located in Ulsan from September 27, to November 12, 2004. They had over 160/90mmHg blood pressure but didn't take any hypotensive drugs. The instruments were the Si-acupuncture. the blood pressure and headache scale using Visual Analogue Scale(VAS). Results : 1. With administration of Si-acupuncture, the blood pressure intensity decreased statistical significantly(systolic blood pressure: t=13.310, p=0.000, diastolic blood pressure: t=11.788, p=0.000). After 30 minutes with administration of Si-acupuncture, the blood pressure intensity decreased statistical significantly(systolic blood pressure: t=15.130, p=0.000, diastolic blood pressure: t=12.479, p=0.000). 2. With administration of Si-acupuncture, the headache intensity not decreased statistical significantly'(t=0.372, p=0.712). After 30 minutes with administration of Si-acupuncture, the headache intensity decreased statistical significantly'(t=7.370, p=0.000) Conclusion : According to above, it was verified that the pressing at Kyeun-Jung, Gok-Ji and Zok-Sam-Li with Si-acupuncture was effective in decreasing of blood pressure and headache on the stroke patients.

  • This study evaluated a case of trigeminal nerve stimulation during acupotomy at a site 5 pun left of GV16. The study participant was a 52-year-old male suffering from upper neck pain and numbness, which was managed by acupotomy at a site 5 pun left of GV16. During acupotomy, the patient experienced unexpected numbness and stiffness of the left zygomatic bone. This area corresponds to the distribution of the maxillary nerve, which is the second branch of the trigeminal nerve. After approximately one month, symptoms of numbness and stiffness disappeared without rendering medical treatment. These side effects are presumed to be associated with the trigeminocervical complex and stimulation of the trigeminal nucleus within the spinal cord. Thus, during the acupotomy of the upper neck, especially at GV16, the needles should be inserted slowly, and the patient's response should also be monitored.

  • Objective : In 1983 Autosomal dominent spinocerebellar ataxia(ADCA) has been classified to four types by a useful clinical features according to Harding. Since 1993 ADCA referred to as SCA by molecular genetic characteristics. We focused on the improvement of clinical symptoms in SCA patient through oriental medical treatment. Methods & Results : The assessment included neurophysiological examination and clinical symptoms. For example slow saccade, gaze limitation, upward and lateral, nystagmus, truncal and gait ataxia. The patient(M/30) was clinically charaterized by ocular abnormalities, trunkal and gait ataxia and the MRI showed atrophy of cerebellar vermis. The patient was taken both common acupuncture and Dong-Si venepuncture on Hwasan with herbal medicine. Before the treatment Rt. ocular movement were slowed and a significant eye fixation was observed always in abduction and intermittently presented trunkal and gait ataxia. During the treatment trunkal and gait ataxia has not been presented and ocular obnomalities changed to normal state. This case suggests the possibility of oriental medical treatment on SCA but further observation is needed on this patient.
