  • Semantic web ontologies can be viewed as logic-based domain-oriented contents which allow distributed and heterogeneous information to be semantically integrated, automatically circulated, and enable implicit knowledge to be reasoned. This paper describes the 'Science and Technology Research Area' ontology which is being developed by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI). This ontology was defined to assist actual researchers and project planners to grasp the researchers community from a variety of viewpoints. We describe classes and properties as ontology components and exemplify the representation of real instances in the ontology. In order to represent the identities of real world instances within the ontology, the above ontology employs both class-dependent URI assignment schemes and the identity resolution methods.

  • An ontology as the core element of Semantic Web is a formal specification of a conceptualization of shared domain knowledge. The use of well-defined ontologies can increase the quality of interoperable information systems in the area of Semantic Web. However, in practice, it is not easy to develop high-quality ontologies which have no errors. Therefore, with methodologies for ontology design, various methods or tools for ontology analysis supporting for error-detection might be very helpful for ontology developers. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for analyzing the core constructs of ontology based on the Formal Concept Analysis and develop a tool that supports error-checking ontologies. Our approach can serve not only as a guidance to modify the existing ontologies, but also as a valuable tool in developing high-quality ontologies.

  • Critical practicality problems are cause to search the presentation and contents according to user request and purpose in previous internet system. Recently, there are a lot of researches about dynamic adaptable ontology based system. We designed ontology based educational system which uses discrete probability and user profile. This system provided advanced usability of contents by ontology and dynamic adaptive model based on discrete probability distribution function and user profile in ontology educational systems. This models represents application domain to weighted direction graph of dynamic adaptive objects and modeling user actions using dynamically approach method structured on discrete probability function. Proposed probability analysis can use that presenting potential attribute to user actions that are tracing search actions of user in ontology structure. This approach methods can allocate dynamically appropriate profiles to user.

  • Building ontology is the key factor to construct semantic web. However, this is time-consuming process. Hence, there are several approaches which automatically generate the ontologies from relational databases. Current studies on the automatic generation of the ontologies from relational database are focused on generating the ontology by analyzing the database schema and stored data. These studies generate the ontology by analyzing only tables and constraints in the schema and ignore view definitions. However, view definitions are defined by a database designer considering the domain of the database. Hence, by considering view definitions, additional classes and hierarchical relationships can be generated. And these are useful in answering queries and integration of ontologies. In this paper, we formalize the generation of classes and hierarchical relationships by analyzing existing methods, and we propose the method which generates additional classes and hierarchical relationships by analyzing view definitions. Finally, we analyze the generated ontology by applying our method to synthetic data and real-world data. We show that our method generates meaningful classes and hierarchical relationships using view definitions.

  • Ontology matching technique is one of the most important techniques in the Semantic Web as well as in other areas. Ontology matching algorithm takes two ontologies as input, and finds out the matching relations between the two ontologies by using some parameters in the matching process. Ontology matching is very useful in various areas such as the integration of large-scale ontologies, the implementation of intelligent unified search, and the share of domain knowledge for various applications. In general cases, the performance of ontology matching is estimated by measuring the matching results such as precision and recall regardless of the requirements that came from the matching environment. Therefore, most research focuses on controlling parameters for the optimization of precision and recall separately. In this paper, we focused on the harmony of precision and recall rather than independent performance of each. The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology that determines parameters for the desired ratio of precision and recall that is appropriate for the requirements of the matching environment.

  • Typical search engines may not be the most efficient means of returning images in accordance with user requirements. With the help of semantic web technology, it is possible to search through images more precisely in any required domain, because the images are annotated according to a custom-built ontology. With appropriate annotations, a search can then, return images according to the context. This paper reports on the design of a tourism ontology relevant to touristic images. In particular, the image features and the meaning of the images are described using various properties, along with other types of information relevant to tourist attractions using the OWL language. The methodology used is described, commencing with building an image and tourism corpus, creating the ontology, and developing the search engine. The system was tested through a case study involving the western region of Thailand. The user can search specifying the specific class of image or they can use text-based searches. The results are ranked using weighted scores based on kinds of properties. The precision and recall of the prototype system was measured to show its efficiency. User satisfaction was also evaluated, was also performed and was found to be high.

  • The purpose of this study is to design metadata model for describing different kinds of concepts, properties, and semantic relationships of result materials of researches. We examine our metadata model to evaluate correctness and efficiency of the model through contents analysis of a constructed database. From the results of examination, we suggest more effective structure of metadata schema. Domain ontology could constructed by the enlarged thesaurus in order to overcome the limitation of the keyword search, therefore we design a philosophy and religion ontology based on subject classification to improve information retrieval and implement it using XML/Topic Maps to improve retrieval functionality of our database.

  • Context-awareness as a key technology of ubiquitous computing needs a context model that understands and processes situational information coming from diverse sensors and devices, and can be applied diversely in various domains. Semantic web based ontologies use structured standard format and express meaning of information, so it is possible to recognize effectively context-awareness situations, allowing the system to share information and understand situation by inference. In this paper, we propose a layered ontology model to support generality and scaleability of the context-awareness system, and applied the model to u-Convention domain. In addition, we propose a effective reasoning method to handle compound situation by combining OWL-DL and SWRL rules.

  • This study suggests the method of converting thesauri to SKOS step by step and it is formalized in three stages of the conversion process. The study develops output and guidelines for each stage. The converting stages are: (1) Collecting and analyzing thesauri for understanding about structure of terms and semantics of relation. (2) Defining the conversion method and creating ontology of the thesauri. (3) Examining the preservation of forms and various semantic relations between the thesauri and then creating SKOS ontology. This method can be applied to the thesauruses with complicated relations in concepts. In the future, it is needed to have an embodiment of conversion after making the algorithm of conversion by stage with the method suggested in this research.
