In this research the coupling problem between the elastic structure and the fluid, specially the hydroelastic harmonic vibration problem, is studied. In order to couple the domains, i.e., the structural domain and the fluid domain, the boundary integral method(direct boundary integral formulation) is used in the fluid domain in combination with the finite element method for the structure. The boundary integral method has been widely developed to apply it to the hydroelastic vibration problem. The hybrid boundary integral method using eigenfunctions on the radiation boundaries and the boundary integral method using the series form image-functions to replace the even bottom and free surface boundaries in case of high frequencies have been developed and tested. According to the boundary conditions and the frequency ranges the different boundary integral methods with the different idealizations of the fluid boundaries have been studied. Using the same interpolation functions for the pressure distribution and the displacement the two domains have been coupled and using Hamilton principle the solution of the hydroelastic have been obtained through the direct minimizing process. It has become evident that the finite-boundary element method combining with the eigenfunction or the image-function method give good results in comparison with the experimental ones and the other numerical results by the finite element method.

A coupled variational equation for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems is derived from a steady state Navier-Stokes equation for incompressible Newtonian fluid and an equilibrium equation for geometrically nonlinear structures. For a fully coupled FSI formulation, between fluid and structures, a traction continuity condition is considered at interfaces where a no-slip condition is imposed. Under total Lagrange formulation in the structural domain, finite rotations are well described by using the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress and Green-Lagrange strain tensors. An adjoint shape design sensitivity analysis (DSA) method based on material derivative approach is applied to the FSI problem to develop a shape design optimization method. Demonstrating some numerical examples, the accuracy and efficiency of the developed DSA method is verified in comparison with finite difference sensitivity. Also, for the FSI problems, a shape design optimization is performed to obtain a maximal stiffness structure satisfying an allowable volume constraint.

In this study, a computational analysis system has been developed in order to investigate flow-induced vibration(FIV) phenomenon for general stator-rotor cascade configurations. Relative movement of the rotor with respect to stator is reflected by modeling independent two computational domains. Fluid domains are modeled using the unstructured grid system with dynamic moving and local deforming methods. Unsteady, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with one equation Spalart-Allmaras and two-equation SST $k-\omega$ turbulence models are solved for unsteady flow problems. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used flow computing the coupled governing equations of the fluid-structure interaction problem. Detailed FIV responses for different flow conditions are presented with respect to time and vibration characteristics are also physically investigated in the time domain.

A transient T-F(time-frequency) signal processing technique is applied to a tilt drop and a linear shock test rigs for identification of shock characteristics of hard disk drive (HDD). The T-F technique essentially tracks the shock characteristics of pivot point response as well as head slap and lift-off phenomena. From the T-F analysis result, the shock characteristic in HDD is modeled by the two degree of freedom coupled-dynamic system, which consists of actuator arm and suspension. As shock designing tool, the maximax shock response spectrum is employed for prediction of shock performance. Finally, the shock control technique is tested with newly designed actuator arm and suspension. Experimental head slap test result shows that the shock performance is much higher with the new shockproof designed model than the current model

In this study, advanced computational analysis system has been developed in order to investigate flow-induced vibration(FIV) phenomenon for general stator-rotor cascade configurations. Relative movement of the rotor with respect to stator is reflected by modeling Independent two computational domains. Fluid domains are modeled using the unstructured grid system with dynamic moving and local deforming methods. Unsteady, Reynolds-averaged Wavier-stokes equations with one equation Spalart-Allmaras and two-equation SST ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence models are solved for unsteady flow problems and also relative moving and vibration effects of the rotor cascade are fully considered. A coupled implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark integration method is used for computing the governing equations of fluid-structure interaction problems. Detailed vibration responses for different flow conditions are presented and then vibration characteristics are physically investigated in the time domain as computational virtual tests.

This paper presents the vibration characteristics of a cantilever beam in contact with a fluid using a PZT actuator and PVDF film. dynamic behaviors of a flexible beam-water interaction system are examined. The effect of the liquid level on free vibration of the composite beam in a partially liquid-filled circular cylinder is investigated. The coupled system is subject to an undisturbed boundary condition un the fluid domain. In the vibration analysis of a wetted beam. the decoupled analyses between beam and fluid have been conventionally employed by considering first the composite beam vibration in the all and secondly Performing the correction taking account for surrounding fluid effects. That is, this investigation was to look at how natural frequencies, mode shapes. and damping are affected by liquid level variations. The signals from the sensor according to the applied input voltage are digitalized and filtered in order to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the composite beam in contact with fluid. It was found that the coupled natural frequencies decreased with the fluid level for the identical composite beam due to added mass effect. In case of the free-free boundary condition, the natural frequency gently decreased at fluid water level between 20% and 80% in the first tending mode and we found out the bends of stair shape for added mass effect of the fluid.

The primary objective of this paper is to investigate the dynamic stability and survivability of a four-column classic TLP (tension-leg platform) under less-than-extreme storm conditions where one or more tendons have been lost due to damage or disconnect. The transient responses of the platform and tendon tensions at the moment of disconnection are particularly underscored. The numerical simulation is based on the BE-FE hybrid hull-tendon-riser coupled dynamic analysis in time domain. Compared to the common industry practice of checking the system without a failed tendon in the beginning, the maximum tension on the neighboring tendon can be significantly increased at the moment of disconnection due to the snap-like transient effects, which can lead to unexpected failure of the total system. It is also found that the transient effects can be reduced with the presence of TTRs (top-tensioned risers) with pneumatic tensioners. It is also seen that the TLP cannot survive in the 100-yr hurricane condition after losing one tendon.

Behavior of underground structural systems is usually complicated because of various unknown parameters. In order to construct those structural systems safely and economically, exact identification of the system parameters and accurate analysis of the system behaviors are essentially required. In this study, a forward analysis program, which is able to eliminate numerical errors due to far field boundary effect, is developed by coupling finite and boundary elements. In this coupled analysis, boundary elements are used in the semi-infinite domain where stress variation is small, and finite elements in the stress concentration region where material nonlinearity should be considered. Then, a back analysis program which can identify the system parameters is developed using the direct method to be combined with the forward analysis program. The elastic modulus and initial stress, which are most important in the description of the behavior of underground structures, are taken as the system parameters. A simple example is examined 0 show that the method can be used effectively.

In this paper, a new method for the stability analysis of a pipe conveying fluid which pulsates periodically is presented. The finite element model is formulated liking into consideration of the effects of the fluid pulsating in a pipe. The damping and stiffness matrices in the finite element equation vary with time due to pulsating fluid. Coupled effects of several harmonic components in the velocity of fluid to a pipe is discussed. A new unstable region appears which will not appear in the stability analysis of single pulsating frequency. A method to directly estimate the forced response of pipe is also discussed. The results presented in this paper are verified by the time domain analysis.

Design procedure of LEG(Linear Electric Generator) is introduced by performing the time-domain analysis for the heaving motion of a floating buoy coupled with LEG. A vertical truncated buoy is selected as a point absorber and a double-sided Halbach array mover and cored slotless stator is adopted as a linear electric generator. LEG with a double-sided Halbach array mover and cored slotless stator is designed with the input data such as the heave motion velocity and wave exciting forces in time-domain. The validity of designed LEG is confirmed by performing generating-characteristic-analysis under the sinusoidal motion of a buoy, based on the numerical techniques such as FE(Finite Element) analysis. In particular, an ECM(Equivalent Circuit Method) is employed as the design tool for the prediction of generating characteristics under irregular wave conditions. Finally, we confirm that the ECM gives reasonable and fast results without sacrifice of accuracy.
