  • Blood group determination in dogs is an important factor in transfusion medicine to minimize immediate or delayed adverse reactions after red blood cells transfusion in small animal clinics. Dog erythrocyte antigen (DEA) 1 is the most important blood type due to its high degree of antigenicity causing acute transfusion adverse reactions. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of DEA 1 in various dog breeds in Korea. As a result of testing 592 blood samples from more than 35 dog breeds, DEA 1 blood typing for each breed showed that 57.8% of Malteses, 63.3% of Poodles, 76.2% of Mastiff-like dogs, 72.5% of Pomeranians, 47.7% of Shih Tzus, 70.3% of mixed breeds, 60.0% of Yorkshire Terriers, and 71.4% of Beagles were DEA 1-positive. Miniature Schnauzers and Jindo breeds had a significantly high prevalence (100%) of DEA 1-positive dogs compared to that in other small breed dogs. This is the first report of immunochromatography-detected DEA 1 prevalence in various domestic dog breeds. Although additional studies need clarifying the potential blood transfusion risks in domestic breed dogs with DEA 1, the results of this study may be useful when selecting a blood donor.

  • A 6-year-old, neutered male, Schnauzer was presented with a one year history of weight loss and exercise intolerance. Physical examination revealed abdominal distention and ecchymosis on the abdominal skin. CBC and serum chemistry profiles revealed anemia and increased serum liver enzymes. Ultrasonography revealed a large liver mass which was characterized by multiple hypoechoic lesions. Postmortem examination revealed primary hepatic hemangiosarcoma. The tumor had extended to the mesentery and diaphragm, but distant metastasis was not found. This case report describes primary hepatic hemangiosarcoma which is very rare in a dog.

  • The report describes a case of natural E. ewingii infection confirmed by microscopic examination and molecular analyses in a domestic dog with acute lameness. After the diagnosis, the dog was successfully treated with oral doxycycline. To authors' knowledge, this is the first case report of natural E. ewingii infection in dogs in South Korea.

  • In this paper, we propose the diagnosis system that can predict pet's state of health for pet lovers lacking a technical knowledge of dog-diseases. The proposed system deduces diseases of dogs from input symptoms by our database constructed with 105 kinds of diseases and symptoms. First, a disease is clustered by ART2, the self-learning method in neural network and secondly, the result values, outputs and the weight values clustered by the algorithm are stored to database. Finally, our system diagnoses the state of health by means of comparing the learned information of diseases with the input vectors of each symptom and the related results of questions on diseases. The correct information of diseases and symptom diagnosing is important to predict the state of health of dogs. Therefore, in this paper, the proposed system can manage symptoms and diseases efficiently by database and ART2. We ask veterinary specialist with the efficiency of our system. As a result, we could confirm the possibility as the auxiliary diagnosis system for dog diseases.
