  • The amphiphilic block copolymer (PEtOz-PCL) of poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (PEtOz) and poly(${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) formed spherical micellar structures with an average diameter of 26 nm in aqueous phase. Au and Pd nanoparticles with an average diameter of $2{\sim}3nm$ were prepared by using the PEtOz-PCL micelle consisting of a PEtOz shell and PCL core. The Au nanoparticles of PEtOz-PCL micelles in aqueous phase could be transferred into organic phase by using n-dodecanethiol. The use of the Pd-NP/PEtOz-PCL micelle as a nanoreactor for Suzuki cross-coupling reaction was investigated.

  • Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the structure and stability of a nanoscale self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of alkanethiol on a gold (111) surface. The tilt angle and orientational order of the alkyl chains in the SAM island were examined by systematically varying the size of the island. The chain length dependence of the SAM island was examined by considering alkanethiols containing 12, 16, 20, and 24 carbon atoms. The minimum diameter of SAM islands made from 1-tetracosanethiol, 1-ecosanethiol, 1-hexadecanethiol and 1-dodecanethiol were 2.29, 1.9, 4.7 and 4.76 nm, respectively. These set the ultimate resolution that can be patterned by soft nanolithography. As the length of alkanethiol increases, the SAM islands became more ordered in both orientation and conformation of the alkyl chains.

  • The manuscript reports synthesis of exceptionally stable gold nanoparticles (GNPs) using Momordica charantia fruit extract. The synthesis approach was optimized by refining three experimental variables including source of the fruit extract (peel, seed, and seed coat), pH of the solution, and temperature of the reaction medium. As synthesized GNPs showed excellent stability against various thiolated compounds (e.g., thioglycolic acid, thiourea, ${\text\tiny{L}}-cystine$, 1-dodecanethiol, and cysteamine hydrochloride). Moreover, these nanoparticles showed distinctive colorimetric responses against $Cd^{2+}$ and thiophenol (TP) from their potential interferences. The limit of detection (LOD) values for $Cd^{2+}$ and TP were determined as 0.186 and $0.154{\mu}M$, respectively.

  • In this study, we fabricated hierarchically self-assembled thin films composed of graphene oxide (GO) sheets and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) techniques and investigated their gas-sensing performance. First, a thermally oxidized silicon wafer ($Si/SiO_2$) was hydrophobized by depositing the LB films of cadmium arachidate. Thin films of ligand-capped Au NPs and GO sheets of the appropriate size were then sequentially transferred onto the hydrophobic silicon wafer using the LB and the LS techniques, respectively. Several different films were prepared by varying the ligand type, film composition, and surface pressure of the spread monolayer at the air/water interface. Their structures were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and their gas-sensing performance for $NH_3$ and $CO_2$ was assessed. The thin films of dodecanethiol-capped Au NPs and medium-sized GO sheets had a better hierarchical structure with higher uniformity and exhibited better gas-sensing performance.

  • We investigated the negative differential resistance (NDR) property of self-assembled 4,4-di(ethynylphenyl)-2'-nitro-l-(thioacetyl)benzene ('nitro-benzene'), which has been well known as a conducting molecule [1], Self-assembly monolayers (SAMs) were prepared on Au (111), which had been thermally deposited onto pre-treated $(H_2SO_4: H_2O_2=3:1)$ Si, The Au substrate was exposed to a 1mM solution of 1-dodecanethiol in ethanol for 24 hours to form a monolayer. After thorough rinsing of the sample, it was exposed to a $0.1{\mu}M$ solution of nitro-benzene in dimethylformamide (DMF) for 30 min and kept in the dark during immersion to avoid photo-oxidation. Following the assembly, the samples were removed from the solutions, rinsed thoroughly with methanol, acetone, and $CH_2Cl_2$, and finally blown dry with $N_2$. Under these conditions, we measured the electrical properties of SAMs using ultra high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy (UHV-STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) [2]. As a result, we confirmed the properties of NDR in between the positive and negative region.

  • This study demonstrates the electrochemical conversion of the synthetic procedure of monolayer-protected clusters using a thin toluene layer over an edge plane pyrolytic graphite electrode. A thin toluene layer with a thickness of 0.31 mm was coated over the electrode and an immiscible liquid/liquid water/toluene interface was introduced. The transfer of the tetrachloroaurate ($AuCl_4^-$) ions into the toluene layer interposed between the aqueous solution and the electrode surface was electrochemically monitored. The $AuCl_4^-$ ions initially could not move through into the toluene layer, showing no reduction wave, but, in the presence of the phase transfer reagent, tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOABr), a cathodic wave at 0.23 V vs. Ag/AgCl was observed, indicating the reduction of the transferred $AuCl_4^-$ ions in the toluene layer. In the presence of dodecanethiol together with TOABr, a self-assembled monolayer was formed over the electro-deposited metallic gold surface. The E-SEM image of the surface indicates the formation of a highly porous metallic gold surface, rather than individual nanoparticles, over the EPG electrode.

  • Microorganisms capable of utilizing diaminododecane containing amine groups diterminally were isolated from the soil by enrichment culture. One strain of these isolated strain, designated as EL-0112L, was selected for this study. The results of this study were as follows. 1. This isolated strain EL-0112L was identified as Microbacterium, from the results of morphological, cultural, and biochemical tests. This isolated strain was named temporarily Microbacterium sp. EL-0112L for convenience. 2. Microbacterium sp. EL-0112L was tested for ability to utilize different kinds of substitued alkanes containing cyan, amine, chloro, and thiol groups(monoterminally or diterminall substituted) as carbon source. Pentamethylenediamine, hexamethylenediamine, n-decane, laurylamine, and alkane derivatives containing cyan, chloro, and thiol groups were not utilized by Microbacterium sp. EL-0112L. 3. The alkane derivatives that did not serve as growth substrates were tested further in oxidation tests using resting cell preparation of Microbacterium sp. EL-0112 L. Alkane derivatives containing cyan, chloro, thiol groups, and n-decane were oxidized by Microbacterium sp. EL-0112 L. It is possible that this isolated strain is also able to degrade their substituted counterparts since they are structually similar to diaminododecane. The remarkable substrates that were being oxidized were dichlorodecane, and 1-dodecanethiol. Microbacterium sp. EL- 0112L could not oxidize pentamethylenediamine, and hexamethylenediamine. 4. The metabolic products formed from diaminododecane by Microbacterium sp. EL-0112 L were acid compound containing carboxyl group and not containing amine group. On the thin layer chromatography, Rf values of these metabolic products were different from that of the product formed by Corynebacterium sp. EL-0112L. These results suggested the specificity of diaminododecane as carbon source.

  • The microcantilever (MCL) sensor is one of the most promising platforms for next-generation label-free biosensing applications. It outperforms conventional label-free detection methods in terms of portability and parallelization. In this paper, an overview of recent advances in our understanding of the coupling between biomolecular interactions and MCL responses is given. A dual compact optical MCL sensing platform was built to enable biosensing experiments both in gas-phase environments and in solutions. The thermal bimorph effect was found to be an effective nanomanipulator for the MCL platform calibration. The study of the alkanethiol self-assembly monolayer (SAM) chain length effect revealed that 1-octanethiol ($C_8H_{17}SH$) induced a larger deflection than that from 1-dodecanethiol ($C_{12}H_{25}SH$) in solutions. Using the clinically relevant biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP), we revealed that the analytical sensitivity of the MCL reached a diagnostic level of $1{\sim}500{\mu}g/ml$ within a 7% coefficient of variation. Using grazing incident x-ray diffractometer (GIXRD) analysis, we found that the gold surface was dominated by the (111) crystalline plane. Moreover, using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, we confirmed that the Au-S covalent bonds occurred in SAM adsorption whereas CRP molecular bindings occurred in protein analysis. First principles density functional theory (DFT) simulations were also used to examine biomolecular adsorption mechanisms. Multiscale modeling was then developed to connect the interactions at the molecular level with the MCL mechanical response. The alkanethiol SAM chain length effect in air was successfully predicted using the multiscale scheme.
