Actinomycetes are the most diverse group of bacteria. in variety. morphology. and life cycle. Especially. the variety of genus and species of Actinomycetes is so diverse among other microorganisms that about 50 genus of Actinomycetes have been reported until now. Among them. Streptomyces genus is the most plentiful and over 220 species have been reported. The number of the genus of Actinomycetes will be expected to be fixed to about 55 genus and 250 Streptomyces species in the year 2000 thereabouts. Morphological and physiological characters of Actinomycetes varies with culture condition. and therefore diverse life cycles are also possible. In this paper. life cycles of the representative Actinomycetes, Nocardia, Streptomyces. Kitasatosporia. GeodermatoPhi/us. and Sporichthya. according to the condition of nutrient in the media were reviewed.
Actinomycetes produce diverse secondary metabolites which have the primary importance in medicine, agriculture and food production, and key to this is their ability to interact with other organisms in natural habitats. In this study, we have investigated the taxonomical and functional diversity of actinomycetes in fecal sample of rhinoceros beetle larvae (Allomyrina dichotoma L.) by using culture-dependent and -independent approaches. For the culture-independent approach, the community DNA was extracted from the sample and 16S rRNA genes of actinomycetes were amplified using actinomycetes-specific PCR primers. Thirty-seven clones were classified into 15 genera and 24 species of actinomycetes. For the culture-dependent approach, 53 strains were isolated from larval feces, of which 27 isolates were selected based on morphological characteristics. The isolates were classified into 4 genera and 14 species, and 24 isolates (89%) were identified as the genus Streptomyces. Many of the representative isolates had antimicrobial activities against plant pathogenic fungi and Gram-positive bacteria. In addition, most of the isolates (78%) showed biochemical properties to hydrolyze cellulose and casein. The results demonstrated that diverse and valuable actinomycetes could be isolated from insect fecal samples, indicating that insect guts can be rich sources for novel bioactive compounds.
Soil samples were collected from new-developed wetland soil ecosystem of Tamarix chinesis plantation in Chinese Yellow River Delta in different months of 2003. Soil characteristics, temporal change and spatial distribution of microbial community composition and their relationship with nitrogen turnover and circling were investigated in order to analyze and characterize the role of microbial diversity and functioning in the specific soil ecosystem. The result showed that the total population of microbial community in the studied soil was considerably low, compared with common natural ecosystem. The amount of microorganism followed as the order: bacteria> actinomycetes>fungi. Amount of actinomycetes were higher by far than that of fungi. Microbial population remarkably varied in different months. Microbial population of three species in top horizon was corrected to that in deep horizon. Obvious rhizosphere effect was observed and microbial population was significantly higher in rhizosphere than other soils due to vegetation growth, root exudation, and cumulative dead fine roots. Our results demonstrate that microbial diversity is low, while is dominated by specific community in the wetland ecosystem of Tamarix chinesi.

During an investigation into the indigenous prokaryotic species diversity in Korea, a total of five bacterial strains were isolated from various environments in Korea. The isolated bacterial strains were identified by analyzing their 16S rRNA gene sequences, and those with a minimum of 98.7% sequence similarity with known bacterial species but not reported in Korea were designated as unrecorded species. These isolates were assigned to three phyla, five orders, five families, and five different genera. The isolates were identified as Cumulibacter manganitolerans (99.1%) and Myolicibacterium tusciae (98.7%) of the class Actinomycetes; Bacillus marasmi (99.9%) of the class Bacilli; and Novosphingobium mathurense (100%) and Microvirga ossetica (98.8%) of the class Alphaproteobacteria. Gram reaction, colony and cellular morphology, basic biochemical characteristics, and phylogenetic position of theses isolates are also described.
The effect of parent rocks to the soil microbial diversity were investigated in soils developed from granite, limestone and basalt parent rocks. In the soils, microbial populations were positively related to the soil chemicals, such as soil pH with ftuorescent Pseudomonas, and soil EC with actinomycetes, fungi, mesophilic Bacillus and alkaliphilic bacteria. Gram negative bacteria, spore forming Bacillus, were maintained relatively same levels of population between granite, limestone and basalt soils. Among the species of Burkholderia, Pseudomonas and Ralstonia were dominated in the granite soils, Pseudomonas, Burkholderia and Phyllobacterium in the limestone soils, and Burkholderia in the basalt soils.
In this study, we demonstrate the use of a PCR-based method for the detection of the specific genes involved in natural-product biosynthesis. This method was applied, using specifically designed PCR primers, to the amplification of a gene segment encoding for sedo-heptulose 7-phosphate cyclase, which appears to be involved in the biosynthetic pathways of $C_7N$ aminoacyclitol or its keto analogue-containing metabolites, in a variety of actinomycetes species. The sequences of DNA fragments (about 540 bp) obtained from three out of 39 actinomycete strains exhibited a high degree of homology with the sedo-heptulose 7-phosphate cyclase gene, which has been implicated in acarbose biosynthesis. The selective cultivation conditions of this experiment induced the expression of these loci, indicating that the range of $C_7N$ aminoacyclitol or its keto analogue-group natural products might be far greater than was previously imagined. Considering that a total of approximately 20 $C_7N$ aminoacyclitol metabolites, or its keto analogue-containing metabolites, have been described to date, it appears likely that some of the unknown loci described herein might constitute new classes of $C_7N$ aminoacyclitol, or of its keto analogue-containing metabolites. As these metabolites, some of which contain valienamine, are among the most potent antidiabetic agents thus far discovered, the molecular detection of specific metabolite-producing actinomycetes may prove a crucial step in current attempts to expand the scope and diversity of natural-product discovery.

Off-flavor materials (geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB)) produced by microorganisms, such as, cyanobacteria and actinomycetes, cause freshwater use problems worldwide. Due to unpleasant taste and odor, these microorganisms have raised issues especially in drinking water resources. Recently, there has been increasing concern about 2-MIB and causal cyanobacteria, namely, Pseudanabaena, in Korea. However, material production and ecological dynamics remain largely unexplored. This study reviewed the distribution of Pseudanabaena, its species diversity, and the research trend of molecular ecology related to 2-MIB production in Korea. Based on published literature, we found that seven species of Pseudanabaena which include P. mucicola, P. limnetica, P. redekei, P. catenata, P. galeata, P. yagii, and P. cinerea appeared to occur in a variety of Korean water systems. All of these Pseudanabaena species were found in the North-Han River system (Lakes Soyang, Chuncheon, Uiam, and Paldang). Some of these species were also detected in other watersheds, but the precise species diversity was not identified. Species belonging to the Pseudanabaena genus are hard to classify through general microscopic alpha taxonomy, due to their very small cell size and similar morphological characters. Moreover, the potential of 2-MIB production cannot be detected by microscopic observation. Combining molecular ecological techniques, such as, environmental genomic materials (eDNA, eRNA) analyses to conventional methods could be useful to better understand the off-flavor material production and dynamics, thereby providing more efficient management strategies of freshwater systems.
This paper presents the results of a study carried out on the diversity of the living microorganisms colonizing the inside of Gyeongjuseokbinggo(Treasures 66) and their effect on the substrate. The inner walls and the arch were first examined with the unaided eye. Green thick mats of algae and microorganisms covered the great part of the walls. For the laboratory research this green biogenic layer and the next soil layer were collected by scraping the walls and the arch under aseptic conditions. The material was then cultured in laboratory. In result, many different species of bacteria, fungi, algae, cyanobacteria and actinomycetes were isolated from the samples.
In this study, the distribution of dictyostelid cellular slime molds was investigated from F, H and $A_1$ horizon of pinus, oak forests in Mt. Puk'an, Mt. Nam and Mt. Kwanak. The relationship of cellular slime molds with other soil microorganisms and abiotic factors were analyzed. The six species were isolated as follows: Polysphondlium pallidurn, Dictyostelium purpureum, D. mucoroides, D. crassicaule, D. capitatum, D. implicatum. The dominant species in pinus forests was P. pallidum, and in oak forests it was D. macro ides. In Mt. Nam, D. mucoroides and P. pallidum were isolated at only oak forest. The Correlations of slime mold abundance with bacteria were significant. Even though positive correlations of cellular slime molds with actinomycetes or fungi were not significant, correlations between soil microorganisms were analyzed. Correlation coefficients were high in Mt. Kwanak(r=0.5921) and Mt. Nam(r=0.7243) at significant level P<0.01. There were significant correlations between total slime molds and abiotic factors. It supports that cellular slime molds are limited by foods in nature. In low level of pH, water content and organic matter, that community diversity is more affected by bacteria whose organic degradation capacity is regulated by interactions of soil microorgaisms. Key words: Cellular slime molds, Soil microorganisms, Correlations, Abiotic factors.
BACKGROUND: Cultivation of genetically modified(GM) crops rapidly has increased in the global agricultural area. Among those, herbicide resistant GM crops are reported to have occupied 89.3 million hectares in 2010. However, cultivation of GM crops in the field evoked the concern of the possibility of gene transfer from transgenic plant into soil microorganisms. In our present study, we have assessed the effects of herbicide-resistant GM Chinese cabbage on the surrounding soil microbial community. METHODS AND RESULTS: The effects of a herbicide-resistant genetically modified (GM) Chinese cabbage on the soil microbial community in its field of growth were assessed using a conventional culture technique and also culture-independent molecular methods. Three replicate field plots were planted with a single GM and four non-GM Chinese cabbages (these included a non-GM counterpart). The soils around these plants were compared using colony counting, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and a species diversity index assessment during the growing periods. The bacterial, fungal and actinomycetes population densities of the GM Chinese cabbage soils were found to be within the range of those of the non-GM Chinese cabbage soils. The DGGE banding patterns of the GM and non-GM soils were also similar, suggesting that the bacterial community structures were stable within a given month and were unaffected by the presence of a GM plant. The similarities of the bacterial species diversity indices were consistent with this finding. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that soil microbial communities are unaffected by the cultivation of herbicide-resistant GM Chinese cabbage within the experimental time frame.
