  • Effect of Jeo Ryong-Tang water Extract on Renal Function in Rabbit and Dog. In order to investigate the Pharmacological action of Jeo Ryoung-Tang on renal function, this study was performed in rabbit and dog, making use of it's water extract. Jeo Ryoung-Tang water extract (JRWE), when given into ear vein of rabbits, produced diuresis in a small dose, but antidiuresis in a large dose. Diuretic action of JRWE accompanied the increase of glomerular filtration rate (GFR), renal plasma flow (RPF) and amounts of $Na^+$ in exdreated in urin, but fractional excretion of filtered $Na^+$ was not changed. JRWE, when injected into proleg's vein of dog, produced diuresis, At this time, changes of renal function were similar to that of diuresis in rabbit. JRWE, when infused into a renal artery of dog, exhibited the diuresis in both kidney. It is thought that JRWE, when given into vein of rabbit or dog, induces the diuresis, and the mechanism of it's diuresis is the increase of renal plasma flow through secondary action by some endogenous humoural substance.

  • The relative efficacy on the renal function of rabbits by oral administration of furosemide and 1 : 2 furosemide-PVP coprecipitate was compared by measuring the urine volume in response to maximal response and the amounts of electrolytes excreted in urine. The furosemide produced a rapid onset, short duration of diuresis, in contrast, the 1: 2 furosemide-PVP coprecipitate, a rapid onset, significantly larger magnitude, and longer duration of diuresis and therefore the bioavailability of furosemide from the coprecipitate were increased significantly. The average urine volume and the amount of sodium and potassium excreted in urine were increased about 2.9-, 14.8-, and 1.8-fold from furosemide, and about 6.2-, 24.2-, and 3.6-fold from 1 : 2 furosemide- PVP 40,000 coprecipitate, rerpectively, comparing by their control values.

  • In this study the influence of Bradykinin, a biogenic polypeptide, on the excretory function of the dog kidney was investigated, utilizing the clearance and stop-flow method. The results are summarized as follows; 1) Bradykinin administered intravenously elicited a marked antidiuresis. 2) When given into the renal artery, however, prompt increase of the urine flow, sodium excretion and free water clearance without significant change in the glomerular filtration rate ensued. 3) It was also effective during an osmotic diuresis with 10% Mannitol infusion, though the response was not so marked. 4) The stop-flow experiment showed that sodium reabsorption in the proximal tubules is inhibited by the infusion of bradykinin into the renal artery. It was thus concluded that the diuretic effect of bradykinin given intra-arterially results from the inhibition of sodium transport in the proximal tubules.

  • Betaine functions as an osmoregulators in the cells and its inclusion can spare the choline, carcass fat reduction. Thus, two hundred eighty eight of seventy eight weeks old laying hens were fed with 0, 500, 1,000, 2,000 ppm betaine addition during the environmentally high temperature stress. Basal diets contained 16% CP and 2,800 ME. Egg production, feed intake, feed conversion were examined for eight weeks. Egg qualities, liver betaine, blood osmolarity, AntiDiuretic Hormone(ADH) were measured at the end experiment. Egg production of hens fed 500, 2,000 ppm dietary betaine and showed significance between control and 2,000 ppm betaine treatment(P<0.05). ADH of blood sera tended to increase as dietary supplemental betaine increased. The results of this experiments indicated that dietary supplemental betaine was able to improve the performance, eggshell breaking strength, liver betaine in this experiment.

  • 'Gu Maig(瞿麥)' is one of the Chinese crude drugs used mainly to cure a diuretic, gonorhoea and menostasis, etc. With regard to the botanical origin of 'Gu Maig', it has been considered to be Dianthus spp. of Caryophyllaceae, but there has not been studied pharmacognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of the "Gu Maig", the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the leaves and stems of Dianthus species growing in Korea, i.e. D. sinensis, D. superbus var. longicalycinus, D. repens, D. morii, D. superbus var. speciosus were compared. As a result, it was determined that 'Gu Maig' was the whole plant body of Dianthus sinensis and D. superbus var. longicalycinus.

  • The Korean folk medicine 'Am Cho' has been used as the folk remedy for diuretic, stomach and liver cancer. The botanical origin of the crude drug has not been studied pharmacognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of 'Am Cho', the comparative morphological and anatomical characteristics have been studied of Lepisorus species growing wild in Korea, i.e. L. annuifrons, L. onoei, L. thunbergianus, L. ussuriensis and 'Am Cho' form Korea. As a result, it was clarified that 'Am Cho' from Korea was derived from Lepisorus onoei.

  • The whole plants of Prunella vulgaris (Labiatae) and Thesium chinense (Santalaceae) are used as Hakocho(夏枯草) in the market in Korea. In oriental medicine, these herb drugs are prescribed as a diuretic or antiinflammatory drugs. In order to investigate the efficacy of the plants, the extracts were bioassayed for antiinflammatory action. The water extracts of Prunella Herba and Thesii Herba showed remarkable anti-carrageenin effect and significant inhibition of the swellings in adjuvant arthritis in rats. However, the extracts did not show any inhibition of leucocyte emigration in CMC pouch in rats.

  • Woohwangchungsim-Won has been widely used for the treatment of appoplexy, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, insomnia and cerebrovascular accident, etc in oriental hospital and pharmacy. In order to investigate the efficacy of Woohwangchungsim-Won, the water extract of it were bioassayed for isolated ileum, blood vessels, blood pressure, heart and diuresis. The results of this studies were as follows; Spontaneous motilities of isolated ileum of mice were strongly suppressed, and contraction of isolated ileum of mice and guinea-pigs induced by acetylcholine chloride, barium chloride and histamine were inhibited. Vaso-dilating action due to vascular smooth muscle relaxation in frogs and rabbits, and hypotensive action in anesthetized rabbits were noted. Negative inotropic action on the isolated frog heart and diuretic effect in rabbits were shown.
