The speech sound is detected by the vibration measurement of the window glass. In this study, we investigate the effect of the disturbing waves by background noise and window shaker excitation on the speech intelligibility of the detected sound. Based upon Modulation Transfer Function(MTF), speech intelligibility of the sound is objectively estimated by Speech Transmission Index(STI) As the level of the disturbing wave varies, variation of the speech intelligibility is examined. Experimental result reveals how STI is influenced by the level and frequency characteristics of the disturbing wave. By using a customized window shaker for disturbing sound, we evaluate the efficiency and the frequency characteristics of the anti-eavesdropping system. The purpose of the study is to provide useful information to prevent the eavesdropping through the window glass.
Eavesdropping prevention performance is evaluated on a commercial window shaker, which is used to prevent a glass window from eavesdropping. Speech transmission index (STI) is introduced in order to estimate quantitatively the speech intelligibility of the sound detected on the glass window. Objective test by IEC standard using modulation transfer function (MTF) is performed to determine STI. Using Maximum Length Sequency (MLS) signal as a sound source, MTF is measured by accelerometers and laser doppler vibrometer. STI under different level of disturbing wave are compared to confirm the disturbing effect on the speech intelligibility.
Possibility of the remote eavesdropping through window glass is investigated using a laser sensor. Various thicknesses and types of glass windows are excited by maximum length sequency (MLS) signal and the vibration sound is detected by a laser doppler vibrometer. Intelligibility of the detected sound is evaluated using the speech transmission index (STI), which is based on the modulation transfer function (MTF). In order to identify the disturbing effect, different level of disturbing wave is generated by an outside speaker and a window shaker attached on the glass window. On the different thickness of glass windows, decrease effect of the speech intelligibility is analysed.
Piston type wave makers or flap type wave makers are usually adopted as a wave maker which disturbing the fluid domain with sinusoidal motion. Recently hybrid wave maker which could be operated as not only piston type and/or flap type but also swing type wave maker have been devised by utilizing the link mechanism. The wave board of hybrid wave maker has been devised to be independently controlled by the horizontal actuators on upper and lower end of the wave board. The wave board could operate as a flap type wave board when the lower hinge is in a stationary condition and the upper hinge is operated with sinusoidal motion. On the contrary, the swing type wave board could be obtained by the lower hinge is activated and the upper hinge is in a stationary condition. When both end of the wave board is activated in a synchronized condition, the wave board motion become piston motion. In addition the hybrid wave maker could enhance the piston motion with flap motion or swing motion by selecting control parameters. Various wave board motion of hybrid wave maker and relevant wave form have measured on the wave board and departed location. It is appeared that the novel hybrid wave maker could be utilized for the improvement of wave qualities in experiments.
Nonlinear scattering of difference frequency acoustic wave in a water-saturated sandy sediment was investigated. Difference frequency acoustic wave was observed to be scattered due to the nonlinearity of water-saturated sandy sediment when the collinear acoustic waves with two different fundamental frequencies are incident on the sediment. The pressure level of the difference frequency acoustic wave was 6 dB higher than the background noise level. It seems very useful to evaluate the nonlinear parameter of water-saturated sandy sediment without disturbing the sediment. Such nonlinear acoustic response of water-saturated sandy sediment can be used as background acoustic data for estimating the gas void fraction in marine gassy sandy sedimen.
It is generally known that submerged breakwaters can reduce the incoming wave energy without disturbing the beach scenery. However, a submerged breakwater is also able to cause a setup of the sea level in the protected area which is also called as water piling-up. Since the piling-up can result in longshore currents, sediment transports, and unexpected beach erosion, understanding about the piling-up process is required prior to designing the nearshore structures. In this study, the water piling-up behind a submerged breakwater is assessed in the time of storm events. For the study area, Anmok beach in Gyeonso-dong, Gangwon-do is selected. 1-year, 5-year, 10-year, and 50-year return-values were derived from Peaks-Over-Threshold(POT) method and those are applied as offshore boundary conditions for the numerical simulation. The numerical results of the piling-up were assessed with regard to the wave steepness and the height of the submerged breakwater. With increase of both significant wave height and the height of the submerged breakwater, the piling-up parameter is also increased which can lead to erosion of dry beach behind the structure.
The pseudospectral method for stability analysis was used to find the most influential disturbance mode for transition of plane channel flows and Blasius flow at their critical Reynolds numbers. A number of various oblique disturbance waves were investigated for their pseudospectra and resolvent norm contours in each flow, and an exhaustive search method was employed to find the disturbing waves to which the flows become most unstable. In plane Poiseuille flow an oblique disturbance with a wavelength of 3.59h (where h is the half channel width) at an angle $28.7^{\circ}$ was found to be the most influential for the flow transition to turbulence, and in plane Couette flow it is an oblique wave with a wavelength of 3.49h at an angle of $19.4^{\circ}$. But in Blasius flow it was found that the most influential mode is a normal wave with a wavelength of $3.44{\delta}_{999}$. These results imply that the most influential disturbance mode is closely related to the fundamental acoustic wave with a certain shear sheltering in the respective flow geometry.
Purpose: Particle separation in solution is one of important process in a unit operation as well as in an extract preparation for biosensors. Contrary to centrifuge-type of mesh-type filter, using an ultrasonic standing wave make the filtering process continuous and free from maintenance. It is needed to investigate the characteristics of particle movement in the ultrasonic standing wave field. Methods: Through the computer simulation the effects of major design and driving parameters on the alignment characteristics of particles were investigated, and a cylindrical chamber with up-stream flow type was devised using two circular-shape PZTs on both sides of the chamber, one for transmitting ultrasonic wave and the other for just reflecting it. Then, the system performance was experimentally investigated as well. Results: The speed of a particle to reach pressure-node plane increased as the acoustic pressure and size of particle increased. The maximum allowable up-stream flow rate could be calculated as well. As expected, exact numbers of pressure-node planes were well formed at specific locations according to the wavelength of ultrasonic wave. As the driving frequency of PZT got close to its resonance frequency, the bands of particles were observed clearer, which meant the particles were trapped into narrower space. Higher excitation voltages to the PZT produced a greater acoustic force with which to trap particles in the pressure-node planes, so that the particles gathered could move upwards without disturbing their alignments even at a higher inlet flow rate. Conclusions: This research showed the feasibility of particle separation in solution in the continuous way by an ultrasonic standing wave. Further study is needed to develop a device to collect or harvest those separated particles.
To provide the physician with adequate information to diagnose and treat sleepwalking and sleep terrors, the author reviewed clinical features, epidemiology, causative and precipitating factors, polysomnography, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and treatment for these disorders. Sleepwalking and sleep terrors have been defined as disorders of arousal that occur early in the night and have their onset during stage 3 or 4 sleep. In both disorders, patients are difficult to arouse, and complete amnesia or minimal recall of the episode is frequent. Genetic, developmental, and psychological factors have been identified as causes of both sleepwalking and sleep terrors. Sleepwalking and sleep terrors typically begin in childhood or early adolescence and are usually outgrown by the end of adolescence. When sleepwalking or sleep terrors have a post-pubertal onset or continue to adulthood, psychopathology is a more significant causative factors. The behavior that occur from deep slow-wave sleep can be painful or dangerous to the individual and/or disturbing to those close to that individual. The assessment of patients suspected of having these conditions requires a thorough medical and sleep history. The most important consideration in managing patients with sleepwalking or sleep terrors episodes is protection from injury.

Conventionally, because it is difficult to control a ship in shallow water and because attempting to do so creates unwanted environmental effects, maneuvering ships in the harbor area for berthing is usually done with the assistance of tugboats. In this paper, we propose a new method for berthing ships automatically by using bow and stern thrusters. Specifically, a steering motion model of a ship is considered, and parameters in the equation are evaluated by the system identification technique. An optimal controller based on observations was designed from the linearization of the non-linear ship motion in the horizontal plane. It is used to reduce the uncertainty about the ship's dynamics and reduce measurement requirements. The performance of the controller was also analyzed for its robustness relative to avoiding disturbing the environment due to winds, currents, and wave-drift forces. Experiments were conducted to estimate the potential for identifying result and the design of the controller. Specifically, in this paper, the system modeling and tracking control approach are discussed based on a two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) servo-system design.
