  • In this paper, a decentralized control problem is considered for multimachine power systems with nonlinear interconnections and disturbances. A direct feedback linearization compensator is employed to cancel most of the nonlinearities, and then a backstepping procedure is applied to deal with the interconnections and to reduce the effects of a disturbance that does not satisfy the matching condition. In this procedure, the disturbance is handled by using a smooth approximation of the signum function. Practical stability is achieved under the assumption that the infinite norm of the disturbance is known. However, even in the case where the infinite norm of the disturbance is not known precisely, the proposed control system still guarantees $L_2$ stability. Furthermore, the origin is globally uniformly asymptotically stable in the absence of the disturbance. A three-machine power system is considered as an application example.

  • The underlying principle of fault detection via unknown input observer is to make the state estimation error independent of disturbances(or unknown inputs). In this paper, we present a systematic method that can exactly assign the eigenstructure with disturbance suppression and fault isolation capability. A desired eigenstructure for both fault isolation and disturbance suppression is obtained by an optimization method. For the dual purposes, terms for fault isolation and far disturbance suppression are included in the employed objective function for the optimization. The proposed scheme is applied to a simple example to confirm the usefulness of the method.

  • This paper presents a Modified Adaptive Complementary Sliding Mode Control (MACSMC) system for the longitudinal motion control of the Fully-Submerged Hydrofoil Craft (FSHC) in the presence of time varying disturbance and uncertain perturbations. The nonlinear disturbance observer is designed with less conservatism that only boundedness of the derivative of the disturbance is required. Then, a complementary sliding mode control system combined with adaptive law is designed to reduce the bound of stabilization error with fast convergence. In particularly, the modified complementary sliding mode surface which contains the estimation of the disturbance can reduce the switching gain and retain the normal performance of the system. Moreover, a hyperbolic tangent function contained in the control law is utilized to attenuate the chattering of the actuator. The global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is demonstrated utilizing the Lyapunov stability theory. Ultimately, the simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • A frequency-domain PES estimation and its prediction method are proposed for the tightly-coupled servo/mechanical design of high-TPI HDD system above 100kTPI. The major two disturbance energies which are related with mechanical vibrations inside of HDD are used to predict the drive-level PES, while considering closed-loop servo dynamics. One is the torque disturbance which mainly comes from aerodynamic excitation of HSA system and the other is the displacement disturbance from disk-spindle dynamics. (omitted)

  • An unknown linear time invariant plant with asymmetric oscillation in the output such as a static load disturbance. A saturation function nonlinear element is used to find the one point information in the frequency domain. An asymmetric self-oscillation caused by such as a static load disturbance saturation function feedback is analyzed. a new method to tune a PID controller based on the analysis is proposed in the presence of asymmetric oscillation. The proposed method does not require the knowledge of plant d.c. gain with an asymmetric oscillation in the plant output.

  • This paper deals with a robust fine seek controller design problem with multiple constraints using a genetic algorithm. A robust $H\infty$ constraint is introduced to attenuate effectively velocity disturbance caused by the eccentric rotation of the disk. A weighting function is optimally selected based on the estimation of velocity disturbance and the estimated minimum velocity loop gain. A robust velocity loop constraint is considered to minimize the variances of the velocity loop gain and bandwidth against the uncertainties of fine actuator. Finally, a robust fine seek controller is obtained by solving a genetic algorithm with an LMI condition and an appropriate objective function. The proposed controller design method is applied to the fine seek control system of a DVD recording device and is evaluated through the experimental results.

  • In this study, to control the heading angle of a ship, which is constantly subjected to various internal and external disturbances during the voyage, an LADRC (linear active disturbance rejection control) design that focuses more on improving the disturbance removal performance was proposed. The speed rate of change of the ship's heading angle due to the turn of the rudder angle was selected as a significant factor, and the nonlinear model of the ship's maneuvering equation, including the steering gear, was treated as a total disturbance. It is the similar process with an LADRC design for the first-order transfer function model. At this time, the gains of the controller included in LADRC and the gains of the extended state observer were tuned to RCGAs (real-coded genetic algorithms) to minimize the integral time-weighted absolute error as an evaluation function. The simulation was performed by applying the proposed GA-LADRC controller to the heading angle control of the Mariner class vessel. In particular, it was confirmed that the proposed controller satisfactorily maintains and follows the set course even when the disturbances such as nonlinearity, modelling error, uncertainty and noise of the measurement sensor are considered.

  • A new scheme to estimate the moment of inertia in the servo motor drive system in very low speed is proposed in this paper. The typical speed estimation scheme in most servo system for low speed operation is sensitive to the variation of machine parameters, especially the moment of inertia. To estimate the motor inertia value, the observer using the Radial Basis Function Networks(RBFN) is applied. The effectiveness of the proposed inertia estimation method is verified by experiments. It is concluded that the speed control performance in the low speed region is improved with the proposed disturbance observer using RBFN.

  • In this paper, a new discrete integral static output feedback variable structure controller based on the a new integral dynamic-type sliding surface and output feedback discrete version of the disturbance observer is suggested for the control of uncertain linear systems. The reaching phase is completely removed by introducing a new proposed integral dynamic-type sliding surface. The output feedback discrete version of disturbance observer is presented for effective compensation of uncertainties and disturbance. A corresponding control with disturbance compensation is selected to guarantee the quasi sliding mode on the predetermined integral dynamic-type sliding surface for guaranteeing the designed output in the integral dynamic-type sliding surface from any initial condition for all the parameter variations and disturbances. Using discrete Lyapunov function, the closed loop stability and the existence condition of the quasi sliding mode is proved. Finally, an illustrative example is presented to show the effectiveness of the algorithm.

  • The issue of rejecting periodic disturbances arises in various applications dealing with rotating machinery. A new method using DIDF (Dual-Input Describing Function) is presented for the rejection of periodic disturbances with uncertain frequency. This can be added to an existing feedback control system without altering the closed-loop system stability. The objective is to design a nonlinear compensator to secure specified oscillation amplitude and frequency which are the same as disturbances. We suggest two procedures to determine coefficients for DIDF's synthesis. The structure of the proposed DIDF is so simple that we can easily synthesize. A number of computer simulations were carried out to demonstrate the salient feature of the proposed DIDF compared to the conventional ones(that is, adaptive algorithms).
