  • Recently, an increasing interest in district heating system has emerged rapidly, In this paper, the physical measurements and data to be monitoring through the internet were carried out with regard to hot water heating energy consumption at the three apartment housings with district heating system in Sang-am district of Seoul, Korea, Measurements were made of the thermal factors such as the pressure of heating pipe, flow rates, hot water temperature and etc, The objective of this study is to compare the design capacity of reheat exchanger with that of preheat exchanger in order to evaluate for the number of plates of two exchangers to be distributed properly.

  • Failure analysis on the welded type 304 pipe used for cooling water piping in the district heating primary side was conducted. Inorganic elements and bacteria in the cooling water and in corrosion products were analyzed, and the weldment was inspected by microscopy and a sensitization test. Corrosion damages were observed in the heat-affected zone, on weld defects such as incomplete fusion or excessive penetration caused by improper welding, or/and at the 6 o'clock position along the pipe axial direction. However, the level of concentration of chloride in the cooling water as low as 80 ppm has been reported to be not enough for even a sensitized type 304 steel, meaning that the additional corrosive factor was required for these corrosion damages. The factor leading to these corrosion damages was drawn to be the metabolisms of the types of bacteria, which is proved by the detection of proton, sulfur containing species, biofilms, and both bacteria and corrosion product analyses.

  • Particles or deposit formed by corrosion of the pipe material bring about bad influences on the heating systems with inconvenience, energy loss and so on. In order to obtain the non-corrosive environments, the circulation hot water should properly be treated in several ways to satisfy one or more conditions of the followings: suitable pH-level, low hardness, low oxygen content, low conductivity, low level of chlorides and sulphur compounds and low level of solid particles. This experimental study was carried out to develope the new guidelines on the optimal water quality and directions for water quality management in heating systems. As results, it was recommended that the heating water be maintained pH-level not less than 8, hardness contents as $CaCO_3$ no more than 50 mg/L, turbidity no more than 10 NTU and T-Fe contents 1 mg/L below.

  • The ice slurry maker which can produce the ice slurry well for the ice particle in-flowing condition was revised. We removed the stagnant region at the top of the ice slurry maker, and IPF 40% could be realized. The IPF controller with 6 mm diameter holes at the bottom was designed. But the IPF controller with only 6 mm diameter holes could not control IPF in a pipe. This is because the ice particles at ice slurry flow exist homogeneously not only at the upper part but also at the bottom part. We changed the hole size of IPF controller surface using fine meshes and then, IPF in a pipe was increased by 70% when the hole size was $80{\mu}m$ and less.

  • Heating pipes, which are among the main equipment in district heating systems, can be classified into supply and return pipes. Because when the district heating transmission pipe, which is charged with district heating in small to medium-size cities, is under thermal stress during temperature variances in heating water, it suffers from the fatigue phenomenon caused by the thermal stress, according to the number of its service years. District heatingpipes have shown various characteristics according to the operating condition of the service connections, and the irregular temperature variance has had a bad influence on fatigue heating pipes. Therefore, in this study, a field test on laid heating pipes was performed, and the data for each region were analyzed. Also, the fatigue safety of district heating pipes was evaluated via cycle-based evaluation and stress-based evaluation.

  • Heating energy was measured in an apartment housing unit with a district heating system, varying the kind of hot water distributors. Ondol coils passing through a living room raised the temperature of the room where the heating was turned off. Including this characteristic of Ondol heating into the modeling, we performed simulations and showed a verification by comparison with the results of measurements. As a result, a main flow control method, which changes hot water flow rate supplied to a housing unit according to the thermal load, can reduce the supplied flow rate and lower the return temperature, compared with a constant flow method. That can result in decreased heat loss in utility-pipe conduits even though the heating energy supplied is almost the same. An outdoor reset control that raises the temperature of the supplied hot water if the outdoor temperature falls has the effect of a quicker response in heating than the reduced flow rate and return temperature.

  • Manholes and underground spaces are installed to manage the buried heat transport pipes of the district heating system, and the corrosion damage of the equipment placed in this space often occurs. The purpose of this work is to identify locations with a high risk of corrosion damage in the air vent and to establish preventive measures based on precise analysis via sampling of heat transport pipes and air vents that have been used for about 30 years. The residual thickness of the air vent decreased significantly by reaching ~1.1 mm in thickness, and locations of 60~70 mm away from a transport pipe were the most vulnerable to corrosion. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis was performed in the corroded oxides, and it was found that chloride ion was contained in the corrosion products. Anodic polarization tests were carried out on the air vent materials (SPPS250, SS304) with varying the amounts of chloride ions at two different temperatures (RT, 80℃). The higher concentration of chloride ions and temperature are, the lower corrosion resistances of both alloys are.

  • In the present study, we developed optimal heat supply algorithm which minimizes the heat loss through the distribution pipe line in group energy apartment. Heating load variation of group energy apartment building in accordance with outdoor air temperature was predicted by the correlation obtained from calorimeter measurements of whole households of apartment building. Supply water temperature and mass flow rate were conjugately controlled to minimize the heat loss rate through distribution pipe line. Group heating apartment located in Hwaseong city, Korea, which has 1,473 households divided in 4 regions, was selected as the object apartment for verifying the present heat supply control algorithm. Compared to the original heat supply system, 10.4% heat loss rate reduction can be accomplished by employing the present control algorithm.

  • An experimental study was performed to control Ice Packing Factor (IPF) of ice slurry in a pipe in a real time. This paper presented the concept that IPF can be adjusted by the amount of the solution contained to ice slurry. Based on this concept, we designed IPF controller consisting of the outlet tube providing ice slurry and the upper tube discharging only a solution through holes, and investigated the technical validity and efficiency of the controller experimentally. As a result, the original proposed IPF controller could not control IPF of ice slurry in a pipe. This is because an ice of ice slurry was drained out into not only the outlet but also the upper of the controller due to the size of the holes relatively large compared to the ice particle. Therefore, we changed the hole size of IPF controller surface using fine meshes and then, observed that IPF in a pipe was increased by $4{\sim}7$ percent when the hole size was $80{\mu}m$ and less.
