The research about distributional characteristics of coastal mantle communities in South Korea was accomplished. This study was carried out by direct analysis of the latitude and temperatures of each releve site on the basis of syntaxonomy and hierarchical system of coastal mantle communities which was already obtained from Zurich-Montpellier School's method. The distribution of coastal mantle communities in South Korea appeared from North to South in the order of Rosa rugosa community, Vitex rotundifolia community, the Linario-Viticetum rotundifoliae, the Roso-Viticetum rotundifoliae and the Imperato-Viticetum rotundifoliae, and it was recognized that tendencies of continuous and overlapped distribution pattern in adjacent syntaxa. Consequently, It is suggested that the syntaxonomical, geographical and bioclimatic informations of Japan, North Korea and China are essential to determine the distributional patterns of coastal mantle communities in Korean Peninsula.
This article reports an attempt to perform a similarity analysis on a collection of 25 culinary manuscripts in Chosun periods using a set of quantitative text analysis methods. Historical culinary texts are valuable resources for linguistic, historic, and cultural studies. We consider the similarity of two texts as the distributional similarities of the functional components of the texts. In the case of culinary texts, text elements such as food names, cooking methods, and ingredients are regarded as functional components. We derive the similarity information from the distributional characteristics of the two key functional components, cooking methods and ingredients. The results are also quantified and visualized to achieve a better understanding of the properties of the individual texts and the collection of the texts as a whole.
We have conducted faunistic study of sea lice collected from marine plankton samples of western and southern coasts of Korea. These specimens were identified as Caligus undulatus Shen and Li, 1959, belonging to family Caligidae and order Siphonostomatoida with worldwide distribution. The range extension of C. undulatus is reported in addition to the previously known distributional range from the Northwest Pacific (China, Japan, and Korea), India, Brazil, and Mexico. This species can be distinguished from all previous reports with characteristics such as overall body proportions of both sexes, structure details of mouth appendages, armature of legs, and some variation in body size. The distributional range of C. undulatus is now given with its northern and south hemisphere limit being 40 to $10^{\circ}N$ in the Indo-Pacific and $30^{\circ}S$ in the Southwest Atlantic. This is the first record of its female occurring in Korea.
To maintain a rich biological diversity is important to develop for biomaterial resources such as Korean evergreen broad-leaved tree species, the distribution of which is restricted to the southern part of Korean peninsula. We assessed photosynthetic characteristics of Quercus acuta and Castanopsis sieboldii, the representative evergreen broad-leaved trees in Korea, in order to establish a basis for conservation strategy related to distributional change in evergreen broad-leaved tree species according to climate change. Photosynthetic characteristics were evaluated in the sun and shade leaves of the two species. Sun leaves in both species revealed higher light compensation point and maximum photosynthetic rate compared to the shade leaves. In addition, photosynthetic rate was higher in Q. acuta than C. sieboldii, which was supported by a higher leaf nitrogen content and leaf mass per area. Water use efficiency was also higher in Q. acuta as compared to that in C. sieboldii. Similar photosynthetic rate, however, was shown in photosynthetic response to $CO_2$ concentration in the intercellular space. These results suggest that both species could respond differently to the changing environmental factors including climate change, suggesting the possibility of distributional changes resulting from a differential growth rate.
1. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find out the distributional characteristics of dyspepsia according to Sasang Constitution. 2. Methods: The medical records of 108 subjects who have received prescriptions and diagnosis of Sasang constitution from June 2007 to April 2009 at a Korean Medical clinic in Seoul were reviewed. General factors and the frequency of the prescriptions according to Sasang constitution are compared and analyzed. 3. Results: Among the 108 subjects, 57(52.78%) persons were Soyangin, 27(25.00%) Taeumin, and 24(22.22%) Soeumin. The frequencies of the prescriptions of interior and exterior disease were compared. Exterior disease(89.47%) was higher than interior disease in Soyangin and interior disease was higher than exterior disease in Taeumin(88.89%) and Soeumin(91.67%). (p-value<0.001) The most common disease was Mangeum-syndrome(73.68%) of exterior disease in Soyangin, Dry-febrile symptom(88.89%) of interior disease in Taeumin and Taeum-syndrome(66.66%) of interior disease in Soeumin. 4. Conclusion: There were significant differences on the distribution of dyspepsia in interior or exterior disease according to Sasang Constitution.
The purpose of this study was to understand the geographical and environmental distribution of animals and plants in Baekdudaegan region using field survey and GIS data. Crucial factors were selected and analyzed to understand the distributional characteristics of wild animals (16 species in 5 orders) and rare endemic plants (20 species in 12 orders). These crucial factors include stand factor (forest type, DBH class, and crown density), soil factor (bed rock, soil texture, and organic matter), geographical factor (elevation, slope, aspect) and climatic factor (temperature, rain fall, humidity). Finally, ten crucial factors were selected by statistical analysis and categorized for analyzing geographical and environmental features. Three orders such as Rodentia, Carnivora, and Artiodactula in wild animal showed the similar habitat characteristics with the small diameter and the elevation range from 801 to 1,000m. The Hydropotes inermis of Artiodactyla and Rattus norvegicus of Rodentia were different in the type of orders, but they had the similar habitat characteristics with the coniferous forest and loam. On the other hand, four orders such as Tubiflorales, Liliales, Ericales, and Rhamnales in the rare and endemic plants were showed high occurrence rate in the organic matter between 4 and 6%. The Rodgersia podophylla of Rosales and Gastrodia elata Blume of Microspermae were different in the type of orders, but they had the similar habitat characteristics with the stand factor and soil factor.

This study examined distributional patterns of Asterias amurensis in Tongyeong, the central South Sea of Korea. The density of the sea star was estimated at 10 chosen sites in the inner and the outer parts of the Tongyeong coast from December 2000. The mean density of the species in this area was $2.4ind./m^{2}$. The seasonal surveys conducted at 3 arbitrary chosen sites (i.e., sea cage, reef and soft sediment) also showed that the abundance of the species at the sea cage site $(density:\;3.6\;ind./m^{2};\;biomass:\;250.7\;gwwt/m^{2})$ was significantly higher than at the reef site $(density:\;1.7\;ind./m^{2};\;biomass:\;63.5\;gwwt/m^{2})$ and the soft sediment site $(density:\;0.4\;ind./m^{2};\;biomass:\;18.9\;gwwt/m^{2})$. Densities were higher at sea cages areas than at reefs and soft bottom sites. At sea cage site, A. amurensis population exhibited a strong aggregated distributional pattern. In contrast, at reef and soft bottom sites, A. amurensis population showed a random distributional pattern. The spatial difference in prey species and its abundance was the primary factor determining the spatial heterogeneity of the sea star in its behavior characteristics. Experiments on the feeding preference indicated that A. amurensis had a strong selectivity on its prey, but this selectivity varied between populations living in different sites. In particular, A. amurensis populations at the reef site showed a strong selectivity on various sessile and mobile animals living in reef areas, suggesting that these animal groups may play a role as "windows for the survival of A. amurensis". These results suggest that the distribution of A. amurensis in Tongyeong is closely associated with abundance of prey species and the bottom composition.
A simple measure of uncertainty importance based on normalized metric distance to quantify the entire change of cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) has been developed for use in probability safety assessments (PSAs). The metric distance measure developed in this study reflects the relative impact of distributional changes of inputs on the change of an output distribution, white most of the existing uncertainty importance measures reflect the magnitude of relative contribution of input uncertainties to the output uncertainty. Normalization is made to make the metric distance measure a dimensionless quantity. The present measure has been evaluated analytically for various analytical distributions to examine its characteristics. To illustrate the applicability and strength of the present measure, two examples are provided. The first example is an application of the present measure to a typical problem of a system fault tree analysis and the second one is for a hypothetical non-linear model. Comparisons of the present result with those obtained by existing uncertainty importance measures show that the metric distance measure is a useful tool to express the measure of uncertainty importance in terms of the relative impact of distributional changes of inputs on the change of an output distribution.
Two unrecorded polychaetous serpulids found in Korean waters, Protula tubularia (Montagu, 1803) and Ditrupa arietina (O.F.Muller, 1776), were described. Taxonomical criteria and morphological characteristics of these cosmopolitan species were also discussed. In addition, some ecological aspects were noted together with distributional ranges in the world ocean.
