  • The purpose of the present study was to design and prepare the optimum formulation for the oral administration of titrated extract of the unsaponifiable fraction of Zea mays L. (ETIZM). For this purpose, we simulated the blood concentration of ETIZM after its oral administration, changing the dissolution rate constants $(0.05{\sim}20\;hr^{-1})$. In vivo parameters, such as absorption rate constant $(k_a)$, elimination rate constant (k) and volume of distribution (Vd), were incorporated in the simulation on the basis of the experiments and literatures. When the dissolution rate constant $(k_r)$ is over $5\;hr^{-1}$, the absorption process appears to be the rate limiting step for the transport of ETIZM from the G.I. ract to the blood circulation. While less than $5\;hr^{-1}$, the dissolution rate considered to be the rate limiting step. Moreover, the optimum blood concentration was shown in the range from 1 to $5\;hr^{-1}$ of $k_r$ in the simulation. To design and prepare the tablets on the basis of the above results, 7 formula containing HPMC, PEG 4000 and PEG 6000 (1-5%, respectively) were prepared and evaluated. The tablets containing PEG 4000 (1%), PEG 6000 (1%) or PEG 4000 (5%) satisfy the optimum $k_r$ range ($1-5\;hr^{-1}$). These formulations, therefore, will be able to show the more effective blood concentration, compared with the commercial products after the oral administration.

  • This study discussed the possible optimization of enzyme-mediated calcite precipitation (EMCP) as a soil-improvement technique. Magnesium chloride was added to the injection solution to delay the reaction rate and to improve the homogenous distribution of precipitated minerals within soil sample. Soil specimens were prepared in 1-m PVC cylinders and treated with the obtained solutions composed of urease, urea, calcium, and magnesium chloride, and the mineral distribution within the sand specimens was examined. The effects of the precipitated minerals on the mechanical and hydraulic properties were evaluated by unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and permeability tests, respectively. The addition of magnesium was found to be effective in delaying the reaction rate by more than one hour. The uniform distribution of the precipitated minerals within a 1-m sand column was obtained when 0.1 mol/L and 0.4 mol/L of magnesium and calcium, respectively, were injected. The strength increased gradually as the mineral content was further increased. The permeability test results showed that the hydraulic conductivity was approximately constant in the presence of a 6% mineral mass. Thus, it was revealed that it is possible to control the strength of treated sand by adjusting the amount of precipitated minerals.

  • We have investigated the relation between the molecular weight distribution (MWD) of diffusible species and the recovery rate of hydrophobicity of room-temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone rubber (SIR) using solvent extraction at various temperatures. It was observed that the extract had a MWD ranging from a few hundreds g/mol to hundreds of thousands g/mol. By measuring the migration of siloxane to the extracted SIR surface through a thin carbon coating, the aspect of migration of diffusible species was observed as a real time plot, and the time constant of the migration was also calculated. According to the time dependence of IR-absorbance, the time constant was increased with the increase of MW of the extracts.

  • To evaluate the performance of heat exchanger with rotating porous plates, the experimental investigation was carried out under various conditions. With an equal interval of 18 mm inside the heat exchanger, the rotating porous plates are mounted. The hot and cold airs enter at opposite ends of heat exchanger and exchange heat each other. In order to measure the temperature distribution of the hot air side inside heat exchanger, the thermocouples are inserted between the plates. The first location of thermocouple is 10 mm downstream from the inlet of heat exchanger, and succeeding ten locations are aligned at an equal interval of 18 mm. As a result of the measurement, the temperature distribution inside heat exchanger was constant as the hot air temperature of inlet is low. It was found that the heat transfer rate does not depend on the variation of RPM at the lower temperature of inlet. The heat transfer rate at the higher temperature of inlet increased a little with the increase in RPM.

  • Burn-in is a widely used method to improve the quality of products or systems after they have been produced. In this paper, the problem of determining optimal burn-in time for a system which performs given mission is considered. It is assumed that the given mission time is not a fixed constant but a random variable which follows an exponential distribution. Assuming that the underlying lifetime distribution of a system has an eventually increasing failure rate function, an upper bound for the optimal burn-in time which maximizes the probability of performing given mission is derived. The obtained result is also applied to an illustrative example.

  • A high rate deposition sputtering process of magnesium oxide thin film in oxide mode has been developed using a 20 kW unipolar pulsed power supply. The power supply was operated at a maximum constant voltage of 500 V and a constant current of 40 A. The pulse repetition rate and the duty were changed in the ranges of $10\sim50$ kHz and $10\sim60%$, respectively. The deposition rate increased with rising incident power to the target. Maximum incident power to the magnesium target was obtained by the control of frequency, duty and current. The deposition rate of a moving state was 9 nm m/min at the average power of 1.5 kW. This result shows higher deposition rate than any other previous work involving reactive sputtering in oxide mode. The thickness uniformities over the entire substrate area of $982mm{\times}563mm$ were observed at the processing pressure of $2.8\sim9.5$ mTorr. The thickness distribution was improved at lower pressure. This technique is proposed for application to a high through-put sputtering system for plasma display panels.

  • We study optimal trading strategy of a market maker with stock inventory. Following Avellaneda and Stoikov (2008), we assume the stock price follows a normal distribution. However, we take a constant expected rate of the stock return and assume that the stock volatility is an inverse function of the stock price level. We show that the optimal bid-ask spread of the market maker is wider for a higher expected rate of stock returns.

  • This paper presents a reliability analysis of S-bonds for AF track circuits, which detect train movement and transmit a speed control signal to the train. Field survey shows that S-bonds are exposed to very large vibrations transferred from rail, and suffer from frequent failures when they were installed on ballasted track. We collected the time-to-failure data of S-bonds from the maintenance field of Seoul metro line 2, and made a parametric approach to estimate the statistical distribution that fits the time-to-failure data. The analysis shows that S-bonds have time-to-failure characteristics described by Weibull distribution. The estimated shape parameter of Weibull distribution is 1.1, which means the distribution has constant failure rate characteristics like exponential distribution. The reliability function, hazard function, percentiles and mean lifetime are derived for maintenance support.

  • The exact cause of the system's failure is often unknown in the masked system lifetime data. In such type of data, there are two observable quantities, namely (i) the systems time to failure and (ii) the set of systems components that contains the component, which might cause the system to fail. Our objective in this paper is to use the maximum likelihood procedure in the presence of masked data to make inference for the reliability of the system's components. We assume a multi-component series system where each component has a constant failure rate. Different cases that permit for closed form solutions of point estimates are considered. The results obtained in this paper generalize other published results.
