Objectives The purpose of this study was to analyze the Sasang constitution and psychological traits of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients and to utilize the results in treatment and management. Methods The differences of Sasang Constitution distribution, psychological characteristics, comorbid disorders between ALS group of 26 patients and general group of 1132 persons were investigated and analyzed. Results There was no significant different distribution of Sasang Constitution between ALS group and general group but there was Yang-like personality tendency in ALS group than general group. In overall constitution, ALS group had the high prevalence rate of musculoskeletal disorders and diabetes than general group. In Soyangin constitution, ALS group had a high prevalence rate of musculoskeletal disorders than genral group. In Taeeumin constitution, ALS group had a high prevalence rate of diabetes and hypertension than general group. Conclusion ALS patients have the Yang-like personality. It is due to the adaptation of personality on the environmental change or coping strategy on diseases rather than the characteristics of congenital Sasang Constitution.

The purpose of this study aimed to know the association between seven health practices and self rated health by Sasang constitution. We recruited 367 subjects aged from 30 to 59. KS 15 questionnaire was used to classify Sasang constitution and visual analogue scale was used to estimate self rated health. Chi-square test was used to know the difference of occupation distribution by Sasang constitution. Anova test, T-test and Chi-square test also used to analyze the difference of self rated health between the health practice group and non-health group in individual Sasang constitution. SPSS 21.0K was used and significant p was <.05. Regular morning meal, non-snaking, good sleeping and sufficient exercise had higher self rated health score (p<.05). Regular morning meal, good sleeping and sufficient exercise had higher score in Tae-eumin (p<.05). Good sleeping had higher self rated health score in Soeumin and Soyangin (p<.05). These results suggest there is possibility that health practices for health promotion could be different according to Sasang constitution.

To study clinical characteristics of patients complained of the tremor, I analyzed a database of twenty four patients managed at the Sasang Constitutional Department in Wonkwang University Oriental Medical Hospiyal from June 1999 to October 2000. 54% of patients who had adequate follow-up were improved with herb medication, electric acupuncture, physical therapy, aromatherapy. 46% of them were not improved in spite of above mentioned treatment. None of patients was aggravated. 71 % of them have male sex and 42% in 7th decade. The distribution ratio was 46% Soyang Constitution, 42% Taeumin Constitution, 13% Soum Constitution. I diagnosed 75% of them as essential tremor or physiological tremor or neurosis. Most of them had the tremor in upper extremities. The period of history were various distribution. Herb medicines were used in the Sasang Constitutional Theory. The Sasang Constitutional Medicine has the significant effects of treating patients complained of the tremor..

The subjects were 420 workers who received oriental and western health examination both in the workplaces for 1 month. This study was planned for the reflection of western health examination results through evaluation of Sasang constitution with use of data from western health examination, and for the presentation of basic data applicable to constitutional medicine with preventive medicine. Data that were collected in field research were analyzed into frequencies, One-Way ANOVA, Chi-square testing by the study purposes, and the research results were as follows: 1. The distribution of Sasang constitution in 420 subjects was Taeumin > Soumin > Soyangin, and the general characteristics of subject by Sasang constitution were no significant difference. 2. For the measured values for body by the subject of Sasang constitution, Taeumin had higher value for height, body weight, systolic and diastolic blood pressure than other 2 constitutions. Soumin had the lowest values in average for all items, and on the other hand, Soyangin had high pulse pressure compared to other constitutions. It was significant difference between constitutions. 3. For the hematological average, Taeumin had high average for FBS, Total-C, GPT, and Taeumin ,and Soyangin had high in Hb compared to Soumin. Soyangin had the highest average for ${\gamma}-GPT$, and there were significant differences between FBS, Total-C, Hb, GPT, ${\gamma}-GTP$, excepting for GOT. 4. For the result of health examination by the Sasang constitution of subject, Taeumin showed the highest percentage in the items of obesity, primary care, secondary suspicion, and showed significant difference by the constitution. For the distribution of the past disease history by the health examination result of Sasang constitution, Taeumin and Soumin had high prevalence rate for hypertension, liver disease, and Soyangin had high prevalence rate for liver disease, hypertension. For the requirement of lifestyle improvement to the subject, the highest requirements by the Sasang constitution were physical exercise for Soumin, regulation of body weight for Taeumin, and it showed significant difference. For the requirement of primary care by the constitution, the highest requiremetns were obesity control for Taeumin, blood pressure control for Soumin, Soyangin, and liver suspicion was the highest distribution for each constitution in the case of having decision for secondary suspicion.

We proceeded the judgement of Sasang constitution of 79 children(the age 101 between 15) who have visited Dongguk Bundang Oriental Medical Hospital during 3 months from August 2002 to October 2002 by Questionnaire of Sasang Constitution Classification and conducted questionnaire survey about the type of disease and symptom occurred frequently. The conclusion is following. 1. The distribution of Sasang constitution: Soeum group(少陰人) 32, Taeeuml group(太陰人) 29, Soyang group(少陽人) 18. 2. The distribution of systemic disease occurred frequently : in digestive system, Soeum (46.9%) & Soyang(44.4%) group more than Taeeum group(34.5%) and in genitourinary system and others, Soeum(28.1%) more than Taeeum group(17.2%). 3. The distribution of symptom occurred frequently : in rhinitis and sinusitis, Taeeum(60.0%) & Soeum(60.0%) more than Soyang(45.5%), in abdominal pain, Soeum(58.8%) & Soyang(62.5%) more than Taeeum(36.4%), and in diarrhea, Taeeum(45.5%) more than Soeum(123.5%) & Soyang group(25.0%). Headache & vexation(心煩) are almost found in Soeum group with abdominal pain and excessive sweating is only found in Taeeum group. 4. The efficacy of herbal medication combined with Cervix Cornu Pranum (鹿茸加味劑) : after the medication, change of condition have showed in Taeeum group at the most high rate(31.0%) and showed in Soeum(15.6%) and Soyang(11.1%) group. 5. The distribution of allergic disease: allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis took up the majority of all allergic diseases. In morbidity of allergic rhinitis, Taeeum(62.1%) & Soyang(55.6%) more than Soeum(37.5%). In morbidity of other allergic diseases and degree of severity, it has no difference among three Sasang constitution groups.

The purpose of this paper was to investigated to the relationship between longevity and Sasang Constitution. The investigation of this paper is composed of 4 parts. First part is investigated to the distribution of sex constitution and constitutional form. Second part is the distribution of the special of body quality(blood pressure, Pulse, Respiration, heredity, stool frequency) and the disease. Third part is the relation of the longevity reason(diet, alcohol intake, smoking). Fourth part is the relationship between the QSCC II and longevity reason. The results were as follows : 1. In case of a macrobian, Soyangin is much more in constitution. 2. A macrobian is generally short and thin. 3. About the macrobian's strength of heredity, there is no any meaningful conclusion, but more studying relationship between heredity and longevity is needed. 4. A macrobian has normal condition in blood pressure, pulse and feces condition. 5. In case of macrobian, the portion of a light eater, non-smoker, and abstainer is high, they like warm food. 6. A macrobian who is active and diligent has high accomplishment and good sociality. Considering above conclusion, a macrobian is related to Soyangin in characteristic of constitution. In the future, more studying is needed whether the macrobian has kept their lives with their unique preservation of health or not.

We explicate the forming mechanism of Sasang constitution as the principle of energy distribution which is based on the evolutionary hypothesis. The result was obtained as follows: 1. The principle of form-image (形象) in oriental medicine can be explained with the relation between structure and function that a life acquires through the adaptation and evolution. 2. The Sung-jung (性情) in Sasang constitutional medicine can be explained as the strategy for survival or the pattern of adaptation by which an individual or a species lives in this world. 3. The forming mechanism of Sasang constitutional organic phase (臟局) can be explained as the principle of energy distribution which includes three hypothesis (hypothesis of limited resources, hypothesis of preference and hypothesis of effectiveness). 4. It is postulated that the local hemodynamics is one of the most important factors that determine the difference of Sasang constitutional organic function. 5. The relation of metabolic rate, local hemodynamics and thermo-metabolism is inseparable and it is the important point of forming mechanism of Sasang constitution and the diagnosis of pulse.

Objectives : This study was performed to find out the correlation between the use of herbal extracts and the Sasang constitution of patients in Japan. Methods : We recruited 315 subjects who had been visiting the Center for Kampo Medicine for the treatment, Keio University in Tokyo, Japan. They answered SSCQ-P(Sasang Constitution Questionaire for Patients) questionnaire, a sasang constitution specialist interviewed them and diagnosed the sasang constitution. And the 80 herbal extracts subject's having taken were classified into four type Sasang constitutional herbal formulas according to "Donguisusebowon", the ingredients in a formula that have different role(sovereign, minister, assistant and courie) and effect and indication of formula. Results : 1. Among the total 315 subjects, the number of Taeyangin, Soyangin, Taeeumin, and Soeumin was 3(1.0%), 85(27.0%), 90(28.6%), and 137(43.5%). 2. Among the 80 herbal extracts subject's having taken, the number of each Soyangin, Taeeumin, and Soeumin herbal formulas was 30, 7 and 43. 3. 1 Soyangin and 2 Soeumin herbal formulas were prescribed in 3 Taeyangin subjects group. 29 Soyangin, 4 Taeeumin, 52 Soeumin herbal formulas were prescribed in 85 Soyangin subjects group. 39 Soyangin, 6 Taeeumin, 45 Soeumin herbal formulas were prescribed in 90 Taeeumin subjects group. 51 Soyangin, 6 Taeeumin, 80 Soeumin herbal formulas were prescribed in 137 Soeumin subjects group. Conclusions : The Soeumin rate in Japan was significantly higher than that in Korea. There was no significant correlation between the use of herbal extracts and the Sasang constitution in Japan.

In Sasang medicine, humen are classified into four constitutions which are Taeyang, Soyang. Taeum and Soum. Depending on each different constitution, the clinical and pharmacological application for the same disease might be different. In this study, genomic DNA of different constitutions(Taeum, Soyang and Soum) were analyzed by Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism(RFLP) to provide scientific and objective references for Sasang classification. The DNA polymorphism for each constitution detected as differences in the length of DNA fragments, after digestion with restriction enzyme Hae III, was investigated using YNH24 as DNA probe. The allele size of Taeum, Soyang and Soum group detected by YNH24 ranged from 1.3 to 3.8 kb, 1.5 to 3.9 kb and 1.3 to 4.6 kb, respectively. However, the allele size distribution of YNH24 loci of different constitutions was shown to be too variable to be classified as 3 different constitution groups investigated. For further study, it is suggested that the number of each constitution samples for RFLP analysis should be increased and statistical analysis of the allele size distribution should be carried out.

Objectives The purpose of this review was to investigate constitutional medical research on tumors and to propose information for further research. Methods The literature was investigated from Oriental medicine advanced searching integrated system, China national knowledge infrastructure, and PubMed. The searching terms were cancer, tumor, neoplasm, Sasang constitution, and so on. And studies were collected and analyzed into the three parts of distributions, treatments, and preventions. Results The distribution and type of tumors were different depending on the type of Sasang constitution. The symptoms of a tumor can occur variously in all types of diseases or patterns. Preventing tumors and cultivating health should be considered all aspects of physical, mental, and social health in the Sasang constitutional concept of securing requisite energy of minor organs. Conclusions The Sasang constitutional medicine for treating tumors should be focused on strengthening the constitutional healthy energy considering personal characteristics.
