  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the mass concentration of nanoparticles and understand the characteristics of elements of heavy metal concentrations within nanoparticles in the air using Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor Model-110 (MOUDI-110), based on indoor and outdoor air. Methods: This Study sampled nanoparticles using MOUDI-110 indoors (office) and outdoors at S University in Asan, Korea in order to reveal the concentration of nanoparticles in the air. Sampling continued for nine months (10 times indoors and 14 times outdoors) from March to November 2010. Mass concentrations of nanoparticle and concentrations of heavy metals (Al, Mn, Zn, Ni, Cu, Cr, Pb) were analyzed. Results: Indoors, geometric mean concentration of nanoparticles ranged in size from 0.056 ${\mu}m$ to 0.10 ${\mu}m$ and those of 0.056 ${\mu}m$ or less recorded 0.929 ${\mu}g/m^3$ and 1.002 ${\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. On the other hand, the levels were lower outdoors with 0.819 ${\mu}g/m^3$ and 0.597 ${\mu}g/m^3$. Mann-Whitney U tests showed that the difference between the indoors and the outdoors was statistically meaningful in terms of particles of 0.056 ${\mu}m$ or less (p<0.05) in size. These results are possibly influenced by the use of printers and duplicators as the factor that increased the concentration of nanoparticles. In seasonal concentration distribution, the level was higher during the summer compared to in the autumn. Those of 0.056 ${\mu}m$ or less in size presented a statistically meaningful difference during the summer (p<0.05). These results may be influenced by photochemical event as the factor that makes the levels high. Regarding zinc, among the other heavy metals, the fine particles ranged in size from 0.056 ${\mu}m$ to 0.10 ${\mu}m$ and those of 0.056 ${\mu}m$ or less recorded 1.699 $ng/m^3$ and 1.189 $ng/m^3$ in the outdoors. In the indoors, the levels were lower, with 0.745 $ng/m^3$ and 0.617 $ng/m^3$. Cr and Ni at the size of 0.056 ${\mu}m$ or less, both of which have been known to pose severe health effects, recorded higher concentrations indoors with 0.736 $ng/m^3$ and 0.177 $ng/m^3$, compared to 0.444 $ng/m^3$ and 0.091 $ng/m^3$ outdoors. By season, Zn, Ni, Cu and Pb posted a high level of indoor concentration during the fall. As for Cr, the level of concentration indoors was higher than outdoors both during the summer and the autumn. Conclusion: This study indicates the result of an examination of nano-sized particles and heavy metal concentrations. It will provide useful data for the determination of basic nanoparticle standards in the future.

  • A packed bed of volcanic rock was used as deodorizing material to remove hydrogen sulfide($H_2$S) from air in a laboratory-scale column, and was inoculated with Thiobacillus sp. as $H_2S$ oxidizer. The effects of volcanic rock particle size distribution on system pressure drop were examined. Various tests have been conducted to evaluate the effect of $H_2S$ inlet concentration and CBCT(Empty Bed Contact Time) on $H_2S$ elimination. The pressure drop for particles of size range from 5.6 to 10 mm was 14 mm$H_2S$/m at a representative gas velocity of 0.25m/s. Biofilter using scoria and Thiobacillus sp. could get the stable removal efficiencies more than 99.9% under $H_2S$ inlet concentrations in the range from 30 to 1,100ppm at a constant gas flow rate of $15.2{\ell}$/min. $H_2S$ removal efficiencies greater than 99% were observed as long as EBCT was longer than 8sec at the 250ppm of $H_2S$ inlet concentration. When EBCT was reduced to 5.5 sec, $H_2S$ removal efficiency decreased by about 12 percent. The maximum $H_2S$ elimination capacity was determined to be 269g-$H_2S/m^3{\cdot}hr$.

  • Five on-road measurements were made using a mobile laboratory (ML) to characterize spatial and temporal air pollutant distributions over roads around a day-care center in urban area on 30 August 2013. Fixed monitoring was also done near the day-care center using the ML during the periods between on-road measurements. On-road air pollution monitoring route was classified into seven sections and three zones to identify severe polluted roads among many roads having different traffic volumes and directions. Typical pollutants emitted from vehicles such as $NO_x$, black carbon, particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and submicron particles including nanoparticles were monitored using real-time instruments. Peak concentration episodes were frequently observed during the on-road measurements and most peaks were simultaneously monitored at four pollutants. Colored on-road air pollution map for each pollutant provides an insight on spatial air pollution distribution, showing heavily polluted roads and sections. Average on-road $NO_x$ concentration of each run was similar to that monitored at the nearest roadside air monitoring station.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the character and condition of Cr in the clinker and thereby contribute to the research for reduction in utilizing Cr in the cement manufacturing process. The concentration of chromium by cement particle size and the distribution of chromium by clinker mineral were measured. Next, correlation was considered between chromium and the soluble components in cement. As a result, in the range that cement particles were 20${\mu}$m or less, highest soluble hexavalent chromium was found. When the concentration of chromium was measured through mineral separation, belite and the interstitial phase were higher in chromium than in alite. soluble hexavalent chromium was contained in domestic cement less than 20ppm, and its conversion ratio was somewhat high as 10 to 40% or so.

  • Elastomeric seals are widely used in dynamic seal applications, and it is well known that the sealing surfaces can be gradually worn out. Abrasive wear is known to be the most dominant factor; however, little research has been carried out on this problem until now. In this study, a new contact problem related to elastomeric seals-a small spherical particle and steel surface-was modeled and analyzed using MARC. Variations of von-Mises and residual stress distributions as well as deformed seal and steel surface shapes with seal materials and interferences are presented. The stress distribution and surface deformation are highly affected by the elastic properties of seal. For PTFE, the maximum von-Mises stress exceeds the yield strength, and plastic deformation occurs on the steel surface. Therefore, the sealing surface can also be worn down by sub-surface fatigue due to intervening hard particles in the sealing surfaces together with the well-known abrasion.

  • Innovations from current researches on cloud computing such as applying bio-inspired computing techniques have brought new level solutions in offloading mechanisms. With the growing trend of mobile devices, mobile cloud computing can also benefit from applying bio-inspired techniques. Energy-efficient offloading mechanisms on mobile cloud systems are needed to reduce the total energy consumption but previous works did not consider energy consumption in the decision-making of task distribution. This paper proposes the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) as an offloading strategy of cloudlet to data centers where each task is represented as a particle during the process. The collected tasks are classified using K-means clustering on the cloudlet before applying PSO in order to minimize the number of particles and to locate the best data center for a specific task, instead of considering all tasks during the PSO process. Simulation results show that the proposed PSO excels in choosing data centers with respect to energy consumption, while it has accumulated a little more processing time compared to the other approaches.

  • The composites in the system aluminium titanate-mullite were synthesized by stepwise alkoxide hydrolysis of tetraethylorthosilicate, Si(OCLH5), and titaniumtetraethoxide, $Ti(OC_{2}H_{5})_4$ in $Al_{2}O_{3}$ ethanolic colloidal solution. All particles produced by sol-gel-process were amorphous, monodispesed and had a narrow particle size distribution. Sintered bodies at $1600 ^{\circ}C$ for 2h were subjected to prolonged durability tests-on the one hand annealing at the critical decomposition temperature of $1100 ^{\circ}C$ for lOOh and on the other cyclic thermal shock between 750 and $1400 ^{\circ}C$ for 100h. The best thermal durability was achieved by a composition containing 70 and 80 vol% aluminium titanate, which showed little change in microstructure and thermal expansion cycles during the tests. The microstructural degradation of samples studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and dilatometry, was presented here. The study was conducted in order to predict the service life of aluminium titanate-mullite ceramics formed by this processing route.

  • Available VLBI sources at high frequencies (e.g. >22GHz) are very limited - mainly due to atmospheric fluctuations that degrade coherence time and a power-law energy distribution of particles in case of AGNs. However, simultaneous multi-frequency VLBI receiving system of the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) and its powerful VLBI phase calibration technique offer benefits in finding more weak sources at millimeter wavelengths. Based on this aspect, multi-frequency AGN survey with the KVN (MASK) project, which aims to densify an existing a VLBI catalog of extragalactic radio sources at 22/43/86/129GHz is proposed as a KVN legacy program. We selected 1220 sources of AGNs that include known VLBI sources and new fringe-detected sources using the KVN at K-band (22GHz). Among them, 138 sources were observed as pilot experiments at 22/43/86/129GHz simultaneously and excellent VLBI detection results are achieved. Therefore, we expect that MASK will open a new era in VLBI science at millimeter wavelengths by providing unprecedented number of available sources in the Universe.

  • In general, particle simulation methods such as the MPS(Moving Particle Simulation) or SPH(Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) methods have some serious drawbacks for pressure solutions. The pressure field shows spurious high fluctuations both temporally and spatially. It is well known that pressure fluctuation primarily occurs because of the numerical approximation of the partial differential operators. The MPS and SPH methods employ a pre-defined kernel function in the approximation of the gradient and Laplacian operators. Because this kernel function is constructed artificially, an accurate solution cannot be guaranteed, especially when the distribution of particles is irregular. In this paper, we propose a particle simulation method based on the moving least-square technique for solving the partial differential operators using a Taylor-series expansion. The developed method was applied to the hydro-static pressure and dam-broken problems to validate it.

  • In order to collect basic data of soil environment in the Vicinity of King Sejong Station, King George Island, Antarctica, the physico-chemical characteristics of soils were investigated. Soil samples were collected in Barton Peninsula from 13 sites according to direction from the Sejong Cape. Soils from 13 sites were divided into three groups. The sand percentage of soils were much higher as above 90% than silt and clay percentages of soils at the all sites. Soil texture was classified sandy (10 sites) and loamy sand (3 sites). In distribution characteristics at different soil particles according to direction, large particles ($>500{\mu}m$) were higher in the order of Group 1 (Marian cove coast regions) > Group 2 (Inland regions) > Group 3 (Maxwell bay coast regions). On the other hand, small particles ($<355{\mu}m$) were higher in the order of Group 3 > Group 2 > Group 1. Chemical characteristic of soils showed significant differences at different areas. pH ranged 4.5-6.7, showing it was slightly acid and EC ranged $0.06-0.16dS\;m^{-1}$. T-N, OM and T-C contents were high at #6, #8, #12 and #13 sites. T-P and P2O5 contents were high at #9 and #12 sites. The results of this study will be helpful to understand soil environment in the Antarctic Peninsula and surrounding islands.
