  • The purpose of this study is to ascertain the color design element in traditional palaces among those in the neighboring three nations of East Asia, notably Korea, China and Japan. Undoubtedly the ultimate goal to be pursued, by so doing, has to be inquiry into the identical prototype of Korean color design element. The East Asian color palette is rich in symbolic meaning, mostly these color are in harmony with the nature and human life. In this study, the color of the traditional palace is characterized by the actual color use. The colors of China are various, but they concentration R~G, middle/high level of chroma. In Korea, the colors in palace are distributed in YR/GY, middle/low chroma, relatively higher value. While the major features of Japan color are YR/achromatic with middle/low levels of value and chroma.

  • The objectives of this study are to develop a deterministic, distributed, and event - oriented hydrologic watershed model and to test the applicabilities of the model to small watersheds. The resulting model SRAFEM, Storm Runoff Analysis by Finite Element Method, is capable of simulating storm runoff from small watersheds using two - dimensional overland flow and one - dimensional channel flow components by. kinematic approximations and finite element method. Two small watersheds were selected and the applicability of the model was tested. The test results showed that the mean simulation errors for runoff volume and peak flow were 13.9% and 19.1 % for Yeonwha watershed. They were 42.8% and 8.0% for Banweol watershed, respectively.

  • There is a big issue to generate 3D hexahedral finite element (FE) model, since a process to divide the whole domain into several simple-shaped sub-domains is required before generating a continuous mesh with mapped mesh generators. In general, it is nearly impossible to set up proper division numbers interactively to keep mesh connectivity between sub-domains on a complicated arbitrary-shaped domain. If mesh continuity between sub-domains is not required in an analysis, this complicated process can be omitted. Element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) can accept discontinuous meshes, which only requires nodal information. However it is difficult to choose a reasonable influenced domain in moving least squares scheme with non-uniformly distributed nodes in discontinuous FE models. A new FE scheme fur discontinuous mesh is proposed in this paper by applying improved EFGM with some modification to derive FE approximated function in discontinuous parts. Its validity is evaluated on linear elastic problems.

  • Extruded Profiles of Aluminum alloys have been widely used as parts and frames in mechanical and construction structures. Nowadays, mechanical processing of extruded Al alloy profiles is often employed for various industrial applications. Especially, the bending process is more and more applied and the process is greatly influenced by the distributed mechanical properties in the extruded profiles. Due to large reduction of area or extrusion ratio in ordinary production of extruded profiles, anisotropy is naturally induced by large severe deformation during the extrusion process. Therefore, the anisotropy properties play a great role in the bending process, as a post processing of extruded profiles and errors will be involved when the extruded profiles are treated as isotropic material, ignoring the induced anisotropy in the thin-walled extruded product. In the present work, the anisotropic material change is simulated, as a simplified method, employing Barlats six-component yield criterion in the rigid-plastic finite element method. Finite element computations are carried out for extrusion of a thin-walled part.

  • This paper presents the design method and performance characteristics of a chip-type quadrature hybrid using LTCC-MLC technology. The design method for a chip-type quadrature hybrid is based on lumped element equivalent circuit of quarter-wave transformer. The chip-type quadrature hybrid was miniaturized to a greater extent using multilayer structure and lumped element. The proposed design method can also reduce the undesirable parasitic effects of the chip-type quadrature hybrid. The proposed chip-type quadrature hybrid was designed and fabricated using the proposed design method and the equivalent circuit model of a quarter-wave transformer. Fabrication and measurement of designed chip-type quadrature hybrid show much smaller size than a conventional distributed quadrature hybrid and a good agreement with simulated results.

  • A meso-scale analysis method using the natural element method is proposed for the analysis of material damage of brittle microcracking solids. The microcracking is assumed to occur along Voronoi edges in the Voronoi diagram generated using the nodal points as the generators. The mechanical effect of microcracks is considered by controlling the material constants in the neighborhood of the micorcracks. The macro elastic moduli of isotropic solids containing a number of randomly distributed microcracks are calculated considering the effect of microcrack closure to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

  • The meshing of the domain has long been the major bottleneck in performing the finite element analysis. Research efforts which are so-called meshfree methods have recently been directed towards eliminating or at least easing the requirement for meshing of the domain. In this paper, a new meshfree method for solving nonlinear boundary value problem, based on the bubble packing technique and Delaunay triangle is proposed. The method can be efficiently implemented to the problems with singularity by using formly distributed nodes.

  • A parallel nonlinear analysis program of prestressed concrete frame is migrated on a PC cluster system and a massively parallel processing system, CRAY T3E system, using MPI. The PC cluster system is configured with Pentium Ⅲ class PCs and fast ethernet. The CRAY T3E system is composed of a set of nodes each containing one Processing Element (PE), a memory subsystem and its distributed memory interconnect network. Parallel computing algorithms are implemented on element-wise processing parts including the calculation of stiffness matrix, element stresses and determination of material states, check of material failure and calculation of unbalanced loads. Parallel performance of the migrated program is evaluated through typical numerical examples.

  • This paper presents the shape optimization considering the uncertainty of design variable to find robust optimal solution that has insensitive performance to its change of design variable. Stochastic finite element method (SFEM) is used to treat input data as stochastic variables. It is method that the potential values are series form for the expectation and small variation. Using correlation function of their variables, the statistics of output obtained form the input data distributed. From this, design considering uncertainty of design variables.

  • A four-noded curved shell finite element for the geometrically non-linear analysis of beams curved in plan is introduced. The structure is conceived as a sequence of macro-elements (ME) having the form of transversal segments of identical topology where each slice is formed using a number of the curved shell elements which have 7 degrees of freedom (DOF) per node. A curved box-girder beam example is modelled using various meshes and linear analysis results are compared to the solutions of a well-known computer program SAP2000. Linear and non-linear analyses of the beam under increasing uniformly distributed loads are also carried out. In addition to box-girder beams, the proposed element can also be used in modelling open-section beams with curved or straight axes and circular plates under radial compression. Buckling loads of a circular plate example are obtained for coarse and successively refined meshes and results are compared with each other. The advantage of this element is that curved systems can be realistically modelled and satisfactory results can be obtained even by using coarse meshes.
