  • Recently, as one of low complexity video encoding methods, DVC (Distributed Video Coding) scheme has been actively studied. Most of DVC schemes exploit feedback channel to achieve better coding performances, however, this causes these schemes to have high decoding delay. In order to overcome these, this paper proposes a new fast DVC decoding method using parity-bit request model, which can be obtained by using bit-error rate, sent by encoder with motion vector, which is transmitted through feedback channel by decoder after generating side information. Through several simulations, it is shown that the proposed method improves greatly the decoding speed, compared to the conventional schemes.

  • Distributed video coding technique(DVC) is needed for several applications with low bit rate or low encoding resources. However, since conventional DVC schemes have performance limitations and so as one of the several methods to overcome this problem and to improve the coding efficiency, DVC scheme with the moving information of side information has been developed. Based on this system, in this paper, an efficient reliability estimation is introduced to evaluate the blocks composing of side information and send these blocks location to the encoder side. Then, these enable the encoder to selectively encode and to improve the coding performance. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme performs better than the conventional coding scheme.

  • Recently, distributed video coding (DVC) has been actively studied for low complexity video encoder. The complexity of the encoder in DVC is much simpler than that of traditional video coding schemes such as H.264/AVC, but the complexity of the decoder in DVC increases. In this paper, we propose the Region-Of-Interest (ROI) based DVC with low decoding complexity. The proposed scheme uses the ROI, the region the motion of objects is quickly moving as the input of the Wyner-Ziv (WZ) encoder instead of the whole WZ frame. In this case, the complexity of encoder and decoder is reduced, and the bite rate decreases. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme obtain 0.95 dB as the maximum PSNR gain in Hall Monitor sequence and 1.87 dB in Salesman sequence. Moreover, the complexity of encoder and decoder in the proposed scheme is significantly reduced by 73.7% and 63.3% over the traditional DVC scheme, respectively. In addition, we employ the layered belief propagation (LBP) algorithm whose decoding convergence speed is 1.73 times faster than belief propagation algorithm as the Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) decoder for low decoding complexity.

  • Distributed video coding (DVC) is a new coding paradigm that enables to exploit the statistics among sources only in decoder and to achieve extremely low complex video encoding without any loss of coding efficiency. Wyner-Ziv coding, a particular implementation of DVC, reconstructs video by correcting noise on side information using channel code. Since a good quality of side information brings less noise to be removed by the channel code, generation of good side information is very important for the overall coding efficiency. However, if there are complex motions among frames, it is very hard to generate a good quality of side information without any information of original frame. In this paper, we propose a method to enhance the quality of the side information using small amount of additional information of original frame in the form of hash. By decoder's informing encoder where the hash has to be transmitted, side information can be improved enormously with only small amount of hash data. Therefore, the proposed method gains considerable coding efficiency. Results of our experiment have verified average PSNR gain up to 1 dB, when compared to the well-known DVC codec, known as DISCOVER codec.

  • Recently, lots of research works have been actively focused on the DVC (Distributed Video Coding) techniques which provide a theoretical basis for the implementation of light video encoder. However, most of these studies have showed poorer performances than the conventional standard video coding schemes such as MPEG-1/2, MPEG-4, H.264 etc. In order to overcome the performance limits of the conventional approaches, several channel-divided distributed video coding schemes have been designed in such a way that some information are obtained while generating side information at decoder side and then these are provided to the encoder side, resulting in channel-divided video coding scheme. In this paper, the interpolation scheme by weighted sum of multiple motion-compensated interpolation frames is introduced and a new channel-divided DVC scheme is designed to effectively describe noisy channels based on the motion vector and its matching characteristics. Through several simulations, it is shown that the proposed method performs better than the conventional methods at low bit-rate and keeps the reconstructed visual quality constantly.

  • Distributed video coding is a coding paradigm that allows complexity to be shared between encoder and decoder, in contrast with conventional video coding. We propose that complexity balancing method of encoder/decoder by phase motion estimation algorithm. The encoder performs partial motion estimation. The result of the partial motion estimation is transferred to the decoder, and the decoder performs motion estimation within the narrow range. When the encoder can afford some complexity, complexity balancing is possible. The method proposed is able to know relativity between complexity balancing and coding efficiency. The coding efficiency increase rate by the encoder complexity increases is higher than that by the decoder complexity increases. The proposed method can control the complexity and coding efficiency according to devices' resources and channel conditions.

  • DVC (Distributed Video Coding) techniques provides a basic theory for the implementation of low-power video encoder. Conventional methods decide the parity bit request at decoder side. These are effective in controlling the bit-rate, but, are not able to control the visual quality. Thus, this paper presents an effective method of estimating visual quality improved by correcting the virtual channel noise for the reconstructed frame. Through several experiments, it is shown that the proposed method are able to estimate effectively the decoded visual quality.

  • The increasing demands on low-power, and low-complexity video encoder have been motivating extensive research activities on distributed video coding (DVC) in which the encoder compresses frames without utilizing inter-frame statistical correlation. In DVC encoder, contrary to the conventional video encoder, an error control code compresses the video frames by representing the frames in the form of syndrome bits. In the meantime, the DVC decoder generates side information which is modeled as a noisy version of the original video frames, and a decoder of the error-control code corrects the errors in the side information with the syndrome bits. The noisy observation, i.e., the side information can be understood as the output of a virtual channel corresponding to the orignal video frames, and the conditional probability of the virtual channel model is assumed to follow a Laplacian distribution. Thus, performance improvement of DVC systems depends on performances of the error-control code and the optimal reconstruction step in the DVC decoder. In turn, the performances of two constituent blocks are directly related to a better estimation of the parameter of the correlation channel. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to estimate the parameter of the correlation channel and also a low-complexity version of the proposed algorithm. In particular, the proposed algorithm minimizes squared-error of the Laplacian probability distribution and the empirical observations. Finally, we show that the conventional algorithm can be improved by adopting a confidential window. The proposed algorithm results in PSNR gain up to 1.8 dB and 1.1 dB on Mother and Foreman video sequences, respectively.

  • DVC(Distributed Video Coding) techniques have been attracting a lot of research works since these enable us to implement the light-weight video encoder and to provide good coding efficiency by introducing the feedback channel. However, the feedback channel causes the decoder to increase the decoding complexity and requires very high decoding latency because of numerous iterative decoding processes. So, in order to reduce the decoding delay and then to implement in a real-time environment, this paper proposes several parity bit estimation methods which are based on the temporal correlation, spatial correlation and spatio-temporal correlations between LDPCA frames on each bit plane in the consecutive video frames in pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv video coding scheme and then the performances of these methods are compared in fast DVC scheme. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the adaptive spatio-temporal correlation-based estimation method and the temporal correlation-based estimation method outperform others for the video frames with the highly active contents and the low active contents, respectively. By using these results, the proposed estimation schemes will be able to be effectively used in a variety of different applications.
