Congenital bronchial atresia is a rare anomaly, which results from a congenital focal obliteration of a proximal segmental or subsegmental bronchus, with normal development of the distal structures. The short atretic segment leads to the accumulation of mucus within the distal bronchi, forming a bronchocele and air trapping of the alveoli supplied by these bronchi. The diagnostic CT features include the presence of a branching opacity and the bronchocele, which radiate from the hilum and are surrounded by an area of hyperlucency.
A new species belonging to the genus Cyclopinoides Lindberg, 1953 (Cyclopinidae) is described from three beaches in Korea and Japan, as the first record of the genus from the Pacific. Among five species currently recognized in the genus, the new species resembles C. schulzi Herbst, 1964 from the Red Sea in sharing the character combination of 20-segmented antennule and stumpy caudal rami. However, C. orientalis n. sp. differs from it by relatively longer caudal rami (2.5-2.8 times as long as wide in female and about 1.6-1.8 times in male, while less than 2 times in female and about 1.3 times in male of C. schulzi), and by the transformation of an outer distal spine to a slender seta on the distal exopodal segment of leg 4. Moreover, C. orientalis n. sp. is discernible from C. schulzi in having a pyriform copulatory tube (against elongated tubular style in C. schulzi). A key to the species hitherto known in the genus is provided.
Oncaea prendeli Shmeleva, 1966 is redescribed here based on a specimen collected using a fine-mesh net in the epipelagic layer in the south sea of Jeju Island, Korea. The Korean specimen is generally similar to Mediterranean specimens in terms of morphological characteristics, but it shows a few minor differences in a slightly larger length-to-width ratio for the distal endopod segment of the antenna, a relatively shorter caudal seta IV, and additional ornamentation on the maxillule and maxilla. This species is distinguishable from the most similar congeneric species, O. tregoubovi Shmeleva, 1968, and three species of the genus Spinoncaea Böttger-Schnack, 2003 by the distal and lateral armature of the antenna, ornamentation on the female maxilliped, spine number on the endopod of leg 2, and proportional length of setae on the caudal ramus. Moreover, spine lengths on the exopods of legs 2-4 are proposed as new morphological characters for the identification of congeners. This is the first record of O. prendeli in Korean waters.
Clinodactyly is defined as an angulation of a digit in the radio-ulnar plane. This anomaly can be congenital, dominantly inherited, or acquired due to trauma or inflammation. Although the deformity usually causes little functional impairment, correction is made because of cosmetic problems. Male subject, with polydactyly on thumb(Wassel's type VII) received first surgery at the age of one. And at the age of six, abnormal growth on the radial side of the first metacarpal bone and ulnar deviation of the distal phalanx of the thumb at the interphalangeal joint had developed. The authors used the growing bony segment from the first metacarpal bone as a bone graft for the correction of clinodactyly on thumb. Z-plasty incision was made on the concave(ulnar) side of thumb and a wedge osteotomy was made on the distal phalanx. The bone graft was inserted into the gap of the distal phalanx of the thumb and fixed it with K-wires. Deformity of the metacarpal bone and clinodactyly on thumb was corrected effectively without donor site morbidity with noticible growth of the grafted metacarpal bone 12 months after surgery.
The present study was performed to assess peripheral neural involvement by exposure to hand-arm vibration. Segmental sensory nerve conduction in the median and ulnar nerves were measured in shipyard workers exposed to vibration. The subjects were 47 male adults exposed to hand-arm vibration and 7 healthy male controls. The subjects underwent an extensive bilateral neurophysiological examination. Sensory compound nerve action potential (SNAP) of the median and ulnar nerves in palm-finger and wrist-palm segments were measured by antidromic method. And SNAP of the median and ulnar nerves in wrist-proximal finger and wrist-distal finger segments were measured by orthodromic method. Result of sensory nerve conduction study was abnormal in 31 patients $(66\%)$ and normal in 16 patients $(34\%)$ of subjects. The pathological pattern in the hand-arm vibration exposed group was 13 patients $(28\%)$ of carpal tunnel syndrome, 18 patients $(38\%)$ of distal sensory neuropathy, 7 patients $(15\%)$ of multifocal and 1 patient $(2\%)$ of Guyon syndrome. The present study indicates that vibration-induced nerve impairments exist both in the finger-palm and palm-wrist segment of median and ulnar sensory nerves. The results suggest that segmental sensory nerve conduction study would be useful as objective indication of peripheral nerve impairment induced by the hand-arm vibration.

Ponciri Fructus (PF), the immature fruit of Poncirus trifoliata, has been used for treatment of constipation in Korean traditional medicine. It has been reported that PF has a prokinetic effect on gastrointestinal tract, but little is known about the effect on colonic contraction. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of PF on spontaneous contractions of proximal and distal colon in rats. The aqueous extract of PF was centrifuged and filtered and its supernatant was used for in vitro motility study. The removed colon from rats was divided into proximal and distal segments. Each segment was mounted in a 10 ml organ bath and measured the change of the spontaneous contraction with increasing dose (1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, $1000{\mu}g/ml$) of PF extract administration. Also the effect of PF on the spontaneous contraction was measured under treatment of atropine, acetylcholine (Ach), and tetrodotoxin (TTX). PF increased the spontaneous phasic contraction of distal colon dose dependently, but there was no change in proximal colon. The contractile response induced by PF in distal colon was lower than that of Ach and was partially blocked by atropine ($10^{-6}M$). TTX increased the spontaneous contraction and it was reinforced with Ach addition. But the extract of PF had no or little contractile effect of TTX in colon. PF increased spontaneous contractions selectively in distal colon. The prokinetic effect of PF may be due to enhancement of cholinergic related excitatory neural system.
This study was designed to analysis the displacement and stress distribution of individual tooth by orthodontic force during distal on masse movement of the maxillary dentition. In this study, three dimensional finite element analysis was used. Author made the finite element model of maxillary teeth, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone and bracket with anatomic and physiologic characteristics on computer. Author analysed and evaluated the displacement and stress distribution of individual tooth when extraoral force, Class II intermaxillary elastics, ideal arch wire, MEAW and tip back bend were used for distal on masse movement of the maxillary dentition. These analyses were also applied in the case of the maxillary second molar were not extracted. Author compared the results of the cases which maxillary second molar were extracted or not. The results were expressed quantitatively and visually. Author obtained following results, 1. When anterior headgear was applied, the posterior translation, posterior tipping, and vertical displacement of teeth were produced more in the anterior segment of the dentition. 2. When Class II intermaxillary elastics were applied in the ideal arch wire, the teeth displacement were usually produced in the anterior segment. But when tip back bend were added in the ideal arch wire, the orthodontic force produced by elastics were transmitted to the posterior segment. As increasing the tip back bend, posterior translation and lingual tipping of anterior teeth were decreased, posterior translation and tipping displacement of posterior teeth were increased, and extrusion of anterior teeth by Class II elastics were decreased 3. When MDAW and Class II elastics were applied, the teeth movement were sir flu with the case of ideal arch wire and Class II elastics, but more small and uniform teeth displacement were produced Compared with the ideal arch wire, posterior tipping of the posterior segment were more produced than lingual tipping displacement of the anterior segment. 4. When the maxillary second molar without orthodontic appliance existed, the displacement of maxillary first molar were decreased.
Six new species of copepods associated with polychaetes are described from Korea. Included are Indoclausia bipartita n. sp., Clausia parva n. sp., and Maxilliclausia propria n. gen. n. sp. in the Clausiidae; Pseudanthessius excertus n. sp. in the Pseudanthessiidae; and Polyankylis ovilaxa n. sp. and Sewelloya plana n. gen. n. sp. in the Polyankyliidae. The new genus Maxilliclausia has a peculiar maxilla in which the distal segment forms a sucking disk, a non-prehensile antenna, vestigial legs 3 and 5, and lacks a maxilliped and leg 4. The two new species of the Polyankyllidae are discovered as external associates of terebellid polychaetes. The new genus Sewelloya has a simple female maxilliped bearing only two small setae on its terminal segment, an uniramous leg 4 bearing 1-segmented exopod, and a reduced leg 5 represented by three setae. The genera Terebelliphilus Kim, 2001 which was originally placed in the Sabelliphilidae, and Octophiophora Stock, 1988 and Stockia Sebastian and Pillai, 1974, both of the latters with uncertain familial positions, are transferred to the Polyankyliidae. A key to five genera of the Polyankyliidae are provided.
The incidence of syphilitic aortic aneurysm was decreased now a day. The predilection site of cardiovascular syphilis is the thoracic aorta, especially ascending portion. The form of syphilitic aneurysm is characterized by saccular or fusiform. We have experienced 58 year old female complained of intermittent left chest pain for these 2 years. Saccular aneurysm of 7 cm in diameter at the descending thoracic aorta just distal to the left subclavian artery was confirmed with aortogram, and etiologic lesion was suspected as syphilis by her strong positive finding of serum VDRL test. Excision of the aneurysm was done under temporary bypass with heparinized 10mm silicone bypass cannula, and 23 mm Dacron aortic prosthetic graft in 10 cm segment was replaced, and excised aortic segment was confirmed as syphilitic aneurysm on light microscopic examination. Postoperative hospital course was uneventful, and discharged 3 weeks after operation in good normotensive condition. The patient died of CVA 3 months after discharge at home.
Two new harpacticoid species belonging to the genera $Microarthridion$ Lang, 1944 (Tachidiidae) and $Nitocra$ Boeck, 1864 (Ameiridae) are recorded from underground caves in the karst area of Ninh Binh Province, North Vietnam. $Microarthridion$$thanhi$ n. sp. is distinguished from congeneric species by the number of setae on the antennary exopod, the structure of leg 5 in both sexes, and the finger-like process modified from an outer distal pinnate seta of the third endopodal segment of leg 2 in the male. $Nitocra$$vietnamensis$ n. sp. has the character combination of six setae on the ellipsoidal exopod of leg 5 in both sexes, the first endopodal segment of leg 1 shorter than the whole exopod, the seta/spine armature of an inner seta of P2-P4 enp-1 and four elements on P2 enp-3, and the reduction of the proximal endite to a seta on the maxillary syncoxa.
