A Study on the Weldability and the Fatigue Characteristics in Resistance pot Welding of 5182-O/6061-T6 Dissimilar Aluminum Alloy Sheets (이종 AI합금의 저항점용접부 용접성과 피로특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study deals with spot weld ability of dissimilar aluminum alloy sheets in order to take advantage of its lightweight and strength. The paper also shows the relationship between weld elements(i.e. current, welding time and tip force) and weld quality on the resistance spot weld part of the same and dissimilar Al alloy. The conclusions are: (1) Because of excessive tip force, deep indentation remained at the Al 5182 side which is lower stiffness at the dissimilar Al alloy. (2) Weld quality (i.e. tensile shear strength) of dissimilar Al alloy is superior to that of the same Al 6061 alloy. (3) As long cycles, fatigue life of spot weld specimen on dissimilar Al alloy sheets was better than that of the same Al alloy.

  • Bonded dissimilar materials are being increasingly used in automobiles, aircraft, rolling stocks, electronic devices and engineering structures. Bonded dissimilar materials have several material advantages over homogeneous materials such as high strength, high reliability, light weight and vibration reduction. Due to their increased use it is necessary to understand how these materials behave under stress conditions. One important area is the analysis of the stress intensity factors for interface cracks emanating from circular holes in bonded dissimilar materials. In this study, the bonded scarf joint is selected for analysis using a model which has comprehensive mixed-mode components. The stress intensity factors were determined by using the boundary element method (BEM) on the interface cracks. Variations of scarf angles and crack lengths emanating from a centered circular hole and an edged semicircular hole in the Al/Epoxy bonded scarf joints of dissimilar materials are computed. From these results, the stress intensity factor calculations are verified. In addition, the relationship between scarf angle variation and the effect by crack length and holes are discussed.

  • For many years and primarily for economical reasons, Dissimilar Metal Welds have been used as transition joints in a variety of equipment and applications. But Dissimilar Metal Welds have several fabrication and metallurgical drawbacks that can often lead to in-service failures. For example, the most pronounced fabrication faults are hot cracks. Laser welding techniques have been characterised for various materials. In this paper, the laser weldability of STS304 stainless steel and SM45C at dissimilar metal welds using a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser are experimentally investigated. An experimental study was conducted to determine effects of welding parameters, on eliminating or reducing the extent welding zone formation at dissimilar metal welds and to optimize those parameters that have the most influence parameters such as focus length, power, beam speed, shielding gas, and wave length of laser were tested

  • Application of bonded dissimilar materials in various industries are increasing. When these materials are used in structures, it needs to investigate strength evolution applying fracture mechanics. Al/Epoxy bonded dissimilar materials with an interface crack and an interface crack emanating from an edge semicircular hole were prepared for the static tests so that experiment of fracture toughness were carried out. Stress intensity factors of interface cracks in bonded dissimilar materials were computed with boundary element method(BEM) and the fracture criterion of mixed mode crack were analyzed. From the results, the fracture criterion and the method of strength evolution by the fracture toughness in Al/Epoxy bonded dissimilar materials were proposed.

  • In this paper. Compression in the case where dissimilar blocks are twinned variously are carried out in the condition of lubricated interface. The degree of growth is experimentally investigated. Moreover, numerical simulations are carried out by the elastic-plastic FEM for the case of the dissimilar blocks with the initial sawtooth angle of $60^{\circ}$ . The dissimilar blocks are twinned, larger difference between material properties leads smaller growth, and the degreased interface leads smaller growth than that in the lubricated one. Furthermore, by the simulation of compression where dissimilar blocks are twinned, it is confirmed that the tendency of the general deformation pattern is very similar to the experiment.

  • Determination of weld-induced residual stress has been an important issue in nuclear power industry because several failures were reported in dissimilar metal weld parts due to primary water stress corrosion cracking. In this context, a couple of remarkable round robin analyses were conducted to quantify the welding simulation variables and to establish optimized numerical analysis process. The purpose of the present research is to introduce welding simulation results for a safety and relief nozzle, which has a dissimilar metal weld part as well as a similar metal weld part. First, finite element analyses are carried out to calculate residual stresses at the inside of nozzle considering only dissimilar metal welding.   • Stress singularities appear at the interface edge in dissimilar materials also under thermal loading. First, these singularities then an interface meets a free side surface with an arbitrary angle are studied for a two-dimensional problem. The singular properties under thermal loading are made clear and the concrete singular field are obtained. Secondly, the dependence of stress field on elastic constants in axisymmetric dissimilar materials are. discussed. That is, it is shown that three elastic constants mutually independent are necessary, in general, to characterize the stress field of axisymmetric dissimilar materials, although Dunders' parameters defined for two-dimensional dissimilar materials have been often applied correspondingly also to axisymmetric problems.

  • Recently advantages joining dissimiliar materials and light weight material techniques have led to increasing use of structural adhesives in the various industries. Stress singulartiy occurs at the interface edges of adhesively bonded dissimilar materials. So it is required to analyze its stress singularity at the interface edges of adhesively bonded joints indissimilar materials. In this paper, the analysis method of stress singularity is studied in detail. Also, effects of the stress singularity at the interface edge of adhesively bonded scarf joints in combinations of dissimilar materials are investigated by using 2-dimensional elastic program of boundary element method. As the results, the strength evaluation method of adhesively bonded dissimilar materials using the stress singularity factor, $\Gamma$,is very useful. The fracture criterion, method of strength evaluation and prediction of fracture strength by the stress singularity factor on the adhesively bonded dissimilar materials are proposed.
