  • In this paper, we present a design for a retraction-type actuator (ReACT) that has the characteristics of both thermomechanical metamaterials and displacement amplification mechanisms. The ReACT consists of an actuating bar, a diamond-shaped displacement amplification (DA) structure, and a slot for loading thin-film heaters formed through the actuating bar. When power is supplied to the thin film heater, the actuating bars contacting the heater thermally expand, and the diamond-shaped DA structures retract in the longitudinal direction. The performance characteristics of the ReACT, such as temperature distribution and retracting displacement, were calculated with thermomechanical analysis methods using the finite element method (FEM). Subsequently, the ReACTs were fabricated using a polymer-based 3D printer that can easily execute complex structures, and the performance of the ReACT was evaluated through repeated tests under various temperature conditions. The results of the performance evaluation were compared with the results of the FEM analysis.

  • A joint displacement resistance evaluation method for selecting waterproofing materials in railway bridge decks is proposed. The displacement range for an evaluation is determined by finite element method (FEM) analysis of a load case based on an existing high-speed PSC Girder Box railroad bridge structure. The FEM analysis results were used to calculate the minimum joint displacement range to be applied during testing (approximately 1.5 mm). For the evaluation, four commonly used waterproofing membrane types, cementitious slurry coating (CSC), polyurethane coating system (PCS), self-adhesive asphalt sheet (SAS), and composite asphalt sheet (CAS), were tested, with five specimens of each membrane type. The joint displacement width range conditions, including the minimum displacement range obtained from FEM analysis, were set to be the incrementing interval, from 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 mm. The proposal for the evaluation criteria and the specimen test results demonstrated how the evaluation method is important for the sustainability of high-speed railway bridges.

  • The response displacement method is the most frequently used method for seismic design of underground structures. This method is pseudo-static method, and the evaluations of velocity response spectrum of seismic base and response displacement of surrounding soil are the most important steps. In this study, the evaluation of velocity response spectrum of seismic base according to the Korean seismic design guide and the simple method of calculating the response displacement were studied. It was found that velocity response spectrum of seismic base can be estimated by directly integrating the ground-surface acceleration response spectrum of soil type S$_A$, and the evaluation of the response displacement using double cosine method assuming two layers of soil profile shows the advantages in the seismic design.

  • In this paper, the seismic performance evaluation was performed on 100 existing open-cut power cable tunnels, including ones that did not consider seismic design, in order to verify that the government's demand level (seismic special grade, 0.22 g). The results of the seismic performance evaluation show that most of the tunnels have seismic performance of 0.3 to 1 g, satisfying the level of the seismic special grade and securing the seismic safety. Meanwhile, the earthquake response analysis and structural test were performed to verify the validity of the method and the results of the seismic performance evaluation of the tunnels by the response displacement method, and to verify their seismic safety. As a result, the relative displacement due to the response displacement method under the 0.22 g earthquake was conservative than the results of the earthquake response analysis, and the results of load-displacement curves and response modification coefficient calculation by real scale structural tests showed the safety of the tunnels.

  • There are representative two performance evaluation methods for performance-based design(PBD) of reinforced concrete structures by the nonlinear static analysis, one method includes the capacity spectrum method(CSM) suggested in ATC-40(996) and the other is the displacement coefficient method(DCM) in FEMA-273(1997). The objective of this paper is to compare and verify two methods and suggest the displacement-based design for new performance evaluation of reinforced concrete structures.

  • A series of field tests were performed to suggest a rational method for the stability evaluation of soft clay. The behavior of settlement-displacement obtained by field monitoring system was used to compare and analyze with various stability evaluation methods, and to investigate the applicability of the methods for stability evaluation of soft clay. The limit equilibrium method, numerical analysis and field monitoring methods were used to analyze the stability evaluation. The horizontal displacement was abruptly increased when physicla properties of soft clay reached its maximum values and therefore, the values of these properties could be used to the fundamental data for stability evaluation. The evaluation of the stability of clay embankment was suggested to use inclination of ccrve rather than critical line, and the minimum satey factor of 1.2 or larger for natural clay was recommeded . Therefore, the evaluation of short term stability of soft clay could be effectively peformed with the hypefrbolic model and the field monitored data.

  • There have been no obvious design criteria of high efficient displacement pump using a dimensionless parameter which can represent many physical aspect of displacement pump could be very useful to estimate displacement pump performance. Many dimensionless analysis methods have been developed in fluid dynamics, machine design and so on. In this study a new dimensionless parameter is developed for estimate displacement pump performance and efficiency, until now to evaluate the performance of displacement pumps which are widely used in industry field, primarily experimental methods have been used. The dimensionless parameter contains many physical information about pump design. For example, they are the relation between flow rate and power, displacement operation displacement and size, inlet and outlet valve size. And the developed dimensionless functions are induced from numerical method.

  • A functional suspension model is proposed as a kinematic describing function of the suspension, that represents the relative wheel displacement in polynomial form in terms of the vertical displacement of the wheel center and steering rack displacement. The relative velocity and acceleration of the wheel is represented in terms of first and second derivatives of the kinematic describing function. The system equations of motion for the full vehicle dynamic model are systematically derived by using velocity transformation method of multi-body dynamics. The comparison of test and simulation results demonstrates the validity of the proposed functional suspension modeling method. The model is computationally very efficient to achieve real-time simulation on TMS 320C6711 150 MHz DSP board of HILS (hardware-in-the-loop simulation) system for ECU (electronic control unit) evaluation of semi-active suspension.

  • We have developed a current range extension method to obtain the ratio error and phase displacement of a current transformer (CT) by using absolute evaluation method and two different CTs. The method was applied to CTs under test with the current ratios in the range of 5,000 A / 1 A - 20,000 A / 1 A. The ratio error and phase displacement of the CT under test obtained in this study are consistent with those measured at the national institute in Germany using the same CT under test within an expanded uncertainty (k = 2) in the overall current ratios.

  • This paper presents the structural performance monitoring of an urban footbridge located in Hangzhou, China. The structural health monitoring (SHM) system is designed and implemented for the footbridge to monitor the structural responses of the footbridge and to ensure the structural safety during the period of operation. The monitoring data of stress and displacement measured by the fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensors installed at the critical locations are used to analyze and assess the operation performance of the footbridge. A linear regression method is applied to separate the temperature effect from the stress monitoring data measured by the FBG-based strain sensors. In addition, the static vertical displacement of the footbridge measured by the FBG-based hydrostatic level gauges are presented and compared with the dynamic displacement remotely measured by a machine vision-based measurement system. Based on the examination of the monitored stress and displacement data, the structural safety evaluation is executed in combination with the defined condition index.
