A new adaptive alternating-direction-implicit finite-difference time-domain (ADI-FDTD) method is proposed to obtain isotropic wave propagation for all directional angles. We add the square terms of time-step multiplied by the spatial derivatives of x and y as a perturbed term to the conventional ADI-FDTD and can find the optimization coefficient of square terms of time-step to generate the minimum anisotropy. The new ADI-FDTD is also stable, even when its time-step is greater than the Courant-Friedrich-Levy (CFL) limit. The characteristic equation of the dispersion relation governing the new method is derived and compared with the theoretical and numerical results for the conventional ADI-FDTD and perturbed ADI-FDTD methods.
Parameter estimations were made for the reversed-phase adsorption of perillyl alcohol (POH), a potent anti-cancer agent, on octadecylsilyl-silica gel (ODS). The average particle diameter of ODS was about $15\;{\mu}m$, and the particles were packed in the column $(3.9\;\times\;300mm)$. The mobile phase used was a mixture of acetonitrile and water, in which the acetonitrile ranged between 50 and $70\;(v/v\;\%)$. The first absolute moment and the second central moment were determined from the chromatographic elution curves by moment analysis. Experiments were carried out using POH solutions within the linear adsorption range. The fluid-to-particle mass transfer coefficient was estimated using the Wilson-Geankoplis equation. The axial dispersion coefficient and the intra particle diffusivity were determined from the slope and intercept of a plot of H vs $1/u_0$, respectively. The contributions of each mass-transfer step were axial dispersion, fluid-to-particle mass transfer, and intraparticle diffusion.
An Eulerian-Lagrangin approach is used to compute particle dispersion from a power plant chimney. For air flow, three-dimensional incompressible filtered Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a subgrid-scale model by integrating the Newton's equation, while the dispersed phase is solved in a Lagrangian framework. The velocity ratios between crossflow and a jet of 0.455 and 0.727 are considered. Flow fields and particle distribution of both cases are evaluated and compared. When the velocity ratio is 0.455, it demonstrates a Kelvin-Helmholtz vortex structure above the chimney caused by the interaction between crossflow and a jet, whereas the other case shows flow structures at the top of the chimney collapsed by fast crossflow. Also, complex wake structures cause different particle distributions behind the chimney. The case with the velocity ratio of 0.727 demonstrates strong particle concentration at the vortical region, whereas the case with the velocity ratio of 0.455 shows more dispersive particle distribution. The simulation result shows similar tendency to the experimental result.
A harmonically mode-locked fiber ring laser cavlty was theoretically analyzed. The measured charactenstlcs of a 10 GHz erbium-doped fiber ring laser were used as a basis of the theoretical analysis. From the nonlinear Schroedinger equation of an actively mode-locked erblUm-doped fiber laser. the effects of the components inside the laser cavity have been analyzed includmg nonlinear effects from group-velocity dispersion (GVD) and self-phase modulation (SPM). Usmg the analysls. we have designed a laser cavity with minimum pulsewidth and chirp by changing the intracavity optical intensity and the bandwidth of the filter. In the new design, the chirp i, reduced by 2 times and the pulsewidth by 2A times. compared to the laser used in the experiment. iment.
We propose a simple model to elucidate the dispersion behavior of spiraling modes on silver nanowire by finding correspondence parameters and building a simple equivalent relationship with the planar insulator-metal-insulator geometry. The characteristics approximated for the proposed structure are compared with the results from an exact solution obtained by solving Maxwell's equation in cylindrical coordinates. The effective refractive index for our proposed equivalent model is in good agreement with that for the exact solution in the 400-2000 nm wavelength range. In particular, when the radius of the silver nanowire is 100 nm, the calculated index shows typical improvements; the average percentage error for the real part of the effective refractive index is reduced to only 5% for the $0^{th}$ order mode (11.9% in previous results) and 1.5% for the $1^{st}$ order mode (24.8% in previous results) in the 400-800 nm wavelength range. This equivalent model approach is expected to provide further insight into understanding the important behavior of nanowire waveguides.
In order to mitigate the damage caused by accidents in nuclear power plants (NPPs), evacuation strategies are usually managed on the basis of off-site effects such as the diffusion of radioactive materials and evacuee traffic simulations. However, the interactive behavior between evacuees and the accident environment has a significant effect on the consequential gap. Agent-based modeling (ABM) is a method that can control and observe such interactions by establishing agents (i.e., the evacuees) and patches (i.e., the accident environments). In this paper, a radiological emergency evacuation model is constructed to realistically check the effectiveness of an evacuation strategy using NetLogo, an ABM toolbox. Geographic layers such as radiation sources, roads, buildings, and shelters were downloaded from an official geographic information system (GIS) of Korea, and were modified into respective patches. The dispersion model adopted from the puff equation was also modified to fit the patches on the geographic layer. The evacuees were defined as vehicle agents and a traffic model was implemented by combining the shortest path search (determined by an A * algorithm) and a traffic flow model incorporated in the Nagel-Schreckenberg cellular automata model. To evaluate the radiological harm to the evacuees due to the spread of radioactive materials, a simple exposure model was established to calculate the overlap fraction between the agents and the dispersion patches. This paper aims to demonstrate that the potential of ABM can handle disaster evacuation strategies more realistically than previous approaches.
An analytical investigation has been performed on the mechanical performance of waves propagated in a Single-Layered Graphene Sheet (SLGS) when an In-plane Varying Bending (IVB) load is interacted. It has been supposed that the Graphene Sheet (GS) is located on an elastic medium. Employing a two-parameter elastic foundation, the effects of elastic substrate on the GS behavior are modeled. Besides, the kinematic equations are derived by the means of a trigonometric two-variable refined plate theory. Moreover, in order to indicate the size-dependency of the SLGS, a Nonlocal Strain Gradient Theory (NSGT) was considered. The nonlocal governing differential equations are achieved in the framework of Hamilton's Principle (HP). Also, an analytical approach was used to detect the unknowns of the final eigenvalue equation. Finally, the effects of each parameters using some dispersion charts were determined.
A long vertical duct is an essential installation for extracting smoke to the ground level when a fire occurs in an underground space. Due to the limitations of its basic assumptions, the existing two-layer zone model is unsuitable to model smoke dispersion through a long vertical duct. Therefore, an assessment was made to investigate the applicability of the field model, which is based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A similar configuration to the published experimental work was modeled to test the validity. It is clear that under a consistent decision criterion based on the mass fraction, the field model (CFD) is able to predict that the diffusion front progresses up the shaft with exactly the same rate as that in the empirical correlation equation. This result is for better than the mathematically obtained equations in previously published research. Therefore, it can be said that the field model is an excellent option to predict the smoke dispersion through the long vertical shaft.

Alumina dispersion strengthening copper(ADSC) alloy has great potential for use in many industrial applications such as contact supports, frictional break parts, electrode materials for lead wires, and spot welding with relatively high strength and good conductivity. In this study, we investigated the oxidation behavior of ADSC alloys. These alloys were fabricated in forms of plate and round type samples by surface oxidation reaction using Cu-0.8Al, Cu-0.4Al-0.4Ti, and Cu-0.6Al-0.4Ti(wt%) alloys. The alloys were oxidized at $980^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, 2 h, and 4 h in ambient atmosphere. The microstructure was observed with an optical microscope(OM) and a scanning electron microscope(SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS). Characterization of alumina was carried out using a 200 kV field-emission transmission electron microscope(TEM). As a result, various oxides including Ti were formed in the oxidation layer, in addition to ${\gamma}$-alumina. The thickness of the oxidation layer increased with Ti addition to the Cu-Al alloy and with the oxidation time. The corrected diffusion equation for the plate and round type samples showed different oxidation layer thickness under the same conditions. Diffusion length of the round type specimen had a value higher than that of its plate counterpart because the oxygen concentration per unit area of the round type specimen was higher than that of the plate type specimen at the same diffusion depth.

Recently. three-dimensional models have been used for aquatic dispersion of radioactive effluents in relation to nuclear power plant siting based on the Notice No. 2003-12 'Guideline for investigating and assessing hydrological and aquatic characteristics of nuclear facility site' of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) in Korea. Several nuclear power plants have been under construction or planed. which are Shin-Korl Unit 1 and 2, Shin-Wolsong Unit 1 and 2, and Shln-Ulchin Unit 1 and 2. For assessing the aquatic dispersion of radionuclides released from the above nuclear power plants, it is necessary to know the coastal currents around sites which are affected by circulation of East Sea. In this study, a three dimensional hydrodynamic model for the circulation of the East Sea of Korea has been developed as the first Phase, which Is based on the RIAMOM. The model uses the primitive equation with hydrostatic approximation, and uses Arakawa-B grid system horizontally and Z-coordinate vertically. Model domain is $126.5^{\circ}E\;to\;142.5^{\circ}E$ of east longitude and $33^{\circ}N\;and\;52^{\circ}N$ of the north latitude. The space of the horizontal grid was $1/12^{\circ}$ to longitude and latitude direction and vortical level was divided to 20. This model uses Generalized Arakawa Scheme. Slant Advection, and Mode-Splitting Method. The input data were from JODC, KNFRDI, and ECMWF. The model ing results are in fairly good agreement with schematic patterns of the surface circulation in the East Sea The local current model and aquatic dispersion model of the coastal region will be developed as the second phase. The oceanic dispersion experiments will be also tarried out by using ARGO Drifter around a nuclear pelter plant site.
