The ground subsidence that occurred in an abandoned coal mining area, Gaeun, Korea, was observed by using 25 JERS-1 SAR interferograms from November 1992 to October 1998. We estimated the subsidence on a subset of image pixels corresponding to point-wise permanent scatters (PSs) by exploiting a long temporal series of interferometric phases. The results were compared it with a distribution map of in situ examined crack level. PSs were identified by means of amplitude dispersion index and coherence of the interferograms. The measured subsidence rate represented the average velocity in a period of image acquisition and excluded complex nonlinear displacements such as an abrupt collapse. The mean line-of-sight velocity in the study area is 0.19cm/yr and an r.m.s. error is 0.18cm/yr. The center of the abandoned Gaeun coal mine (0.49cm/yr) and the area near to the Gaeun station (1.66cm/yr) were observed as most rapidly subsiding areas.

We investigate the propagation characteristics of a pulse laser in a time-of-flight laser range finder (TOF-LRF) system with variations in atmospheric conditions, such as temperature, pressure, relative humidity, and the concentration of $CO_2$. The measurement error of distance related with the group velocity change in the TOF-LRF system is analyzed by considering the refractive index of the standard atmosphere with variations in atmospheric conditions. The dependence of the pulse width broadening induced by chromatic dispersion of the standard atmosphere on the operating wavelength and the initial pulse width of the light sources is discussed. The transmission of air with variations in the relative humidity or the concentration of $CO_2$ is analyzed by using different values of absorption coefficients depending on the operation wavelength of the light source in the TOF-LRF system.
This paper investigates the concrete permeability through a numerical and statistical approach. Concrete is considered as a random heterogeneous composite of three phases: aggregates, interfacial transition zones (ITZ) and matrix. The paper begins with some classical bound and estimate theories applied to concrete permeability and the influence of ITZ on these bound and estimate values is discussed. Numerical samples for permeability analysis are established through random aggregate structure (RAS) scheme, each numerical sample containing randomly distributed aggregates coated with ITZ and dispersed in a homogeneous matrix. The volumetric fraction of aggregates is fixed and the size distribution of aggregates observes Fuller's curve. Then finite element method is used to solve the steady permeation problem on 2D numerical samples and the overall permeability is deduced from flux-pressure relation. The impact of ITZ on overall permeability is analyzed in terms of ITZ width and contrast ratio between ITZ and matrix permeabilities. Hereafter, 3680 samples are generated for 23 sample sizes and 4 contrast ratios, and statistical analysis is performed on the permeability dispersion in terms of sample size and ITZ characteristics. By sample theory, the size of representative volume element (RVE) for permeability is then quantified considering sample realization number and expected error. Concluding remarks are provided for the impact of ITZ on concrete permeability and its statistical characteristics.

We demonstrate a repeatless transmission of 2.5 Gbps digital signal over 98 km opticla filbers using optical transmitter and optcial receiver which are designed and implemented using commercially available devices. The optical transmitter is realized by using a distributed feedback(DFB) laser. Temperature of the laser is thermoelectrically stabilized and the output optical power is also stabilized by using negative feedback. The output power of the transmitter is 0 dBm. The optical receiver consists of an InGaAs avalanche photodiode, a preamplifier. an automatic gain control amplifier, and a clock/data regenerator. We find an optimum decision threshold that gives the best receiver sensitivity form the measured V curve. The best sensitivity is -35.5dBm( BER-1*10S010T, PRBS=2S023T -1 ) and the overload power is -9 dBm. Finally, we achieve error free optical transmission with 98 km optical fibers. The exinction ration penalty of 2 dB. the chromatic dispersion penalty of 1 dB, and the total power penalty of 3.0 dB are measured. These results satisfy CCITT recommendation.
Due to large demand for high speed and great capacity for data transfer, WDM, which uses the wavelength division multiplexing technique, is known as alternative way to satisfy those demand for its flexible network operation and management, easy network expansion with existing networks, and enhancement of efficient data transfer rate. For these reasons, a new high capacity WDM optical communication network plan was established. Therefore, the quality of currently deployed optical cables with 81.6 km in length should be assessed to ensure if high capacity WDM system could be implemented on existing optical cables. Two important characteristic parameters, Transfer Loss and PMD (Polarization Mode Dispersion), were measured to evaluate quality of existing optical cable. Transfer Loss was measured at 0.244 dB per kilometer, which is lower than the design standard value at 0.275 dB/km. The measured PMD value gave at 0.030ps/km, and it, therefore, satisfies the value recommended by ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union-T) of 0.5ps/km. In addition, the transfer characteristic for existing 2.5 Gbps and 10 Gbps system were measured and evaluated, and the results showed that error-free transfer is very much feasible. Computer simulation for DWDM system, which is likely be a future backbone network in Korea, to assess the transfer characteristic using the same condition employed for 2.5 Gbps and 10 Gbps was carried out as well. The simulation verified that a stable network operation and reliable service could be provided.
The purpose of this study is to assess the suitability of the statistical techniques employed in papers published in the Korean Journal of Veterinary Research from March 1997 to March 1999 and it is hoped that the critical assessment may be of help to other researchers preparing their works for publication. Of the 246 original papers 94 were included in the analysis. Of 62 papers with the measure of central location and dispersion of data 34 (54.8%) used them correctly : 9 (39.1%) of 23 for t-test ; 1 (33.3%) of 3 for correlation analysis ; 7 (43.8%) of 16 for analysis of variance (ANOVA) ; 5 (62.5%) of 8 for chi-square test ; 44 (71%) of 62 for description of p-value. A number of papers employed ANOVA did not perform subsequent analysis of multiple comparison. Compared to the results of others, relatively higher proportion of papers in the present study was evaluated as appropriate analysis. The reason is that papers described insufficiently on the study design were not included, and evaluation items were restricted to the cases violated seriously inherent assumptions for each statistical technique. Statistical misuse or abuse appeared in the study is due to lack of knowledge on statistics and short of its importance for improvement the quality of paper. Because an inappropriate analysis can lead the readers to misunderstand on findings, observed statistical analyses must be valid, and correctly undertaken. It is suggested that more intensive statistical refereeing are needed, and the communication should be allowed for the controversial points.

The discrete wavelet transform is utilized as preprocessing of Neural Network(NN) to identify aging state of internal partial discharge in transformer. The discrete traveler transform is used to produce wavelet coefficients which are used for Classification. The statistical parameters (maximum of wavelet coefficients, average value, dispersion, skewness, kurtosis) using the wavelet coefficients are input into an back-propagation neural network. The neurons whose weights have obtained through Result of Cross-Validation. The Neural Network learning stops either when the error rate achieves an appropriate minimum or when the learning time overcomes a constant value. The networks, after training, can decide if the test signal is Early Aging State or Last Aging State or normal state.
The goal of quality assurance (QA) is to minimize systematic errors in order to maintain the quality of a certain process. Statistical process control (SPC) has been utilized for QA in radiation therapy field since 2005 and is changing QA paradigm. Its purpose is to maintain a process within the given control limits while monitoring of error trends such as variation or dispersion. SPC can be applied to all QA aspects of radiotherapy; however, a medical physicist should have enough knowledge about the application of SPC to QC/QA procedures. In this paper, the author introduce a concept of SPC and review some previously reported studies those used SPC for QA in radiation therapy.

The radio signal in GNSS was intentionally designed with two frequencies in order to combat the dispersion error caused by trans-ionospheric propagation. By measuring the path delay independently at the two, widely spaced GPS frequencies, L1 & L2, the TEC along the path from satellite to receiver can be measured directly. The issue with dual frequency measurement of the ionosphere is the calibration of L1/L2 interfrequency biases. L1/L2 interfrequency biases are generated because physical electric signal paths of L1 and L2 circuits are different from each other for both satellites and receiver. Conventionally L1/L2 interfrequency bias is estimated and broadcasted by 2D ionospheric model. In this paper, we estimated IFB (interfrequency bias) by 2D & 3D ionospheric models including real time filter methods and compared the result of those and concluded the merit of 3D tomography model to recover the problem of 2D thin shell model. We confirmed our conclusion by experimental data.
A one-dimensional transport of displacing monovalent ion, $A^+$, and a trivalent ion being displaced, $B^{3+}^ in a porous exchange system such as soil was approximated using the Crank-Nicolson implicit finite difference technique and the Thomas algorithm in tandem. The variations in the concentration profile were investigated by varying the ion-exchange equilibrium constant (k) of ion-exchange reactions, the influent concentrations, and the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the exchanger, under constant flux condition of pore water and dispersion coefficient. A higher value of k resulted in a greater removal of the native ion, behind the sharper advancing front of displacing ion, while the magnitude of the penetration distance of $A^+$ was not great. As the CEC increased, the equivalent fraction of $B^{3+}^ initially in the soil was greater, thus indicating that a higher CEC adsorbed trivalent cations preferentially over monovalent ions. Mass balance error from simulation results was less than 1%, indicating this model accounted for instantaneous charge balance fairly well.
