  • We have constructed laser Doppler velocimetry system using self-mixing effect with a semiconductor laser. This technology is based on the frequency mixing phenomena which occurs when light scattered back from the moving object into the laser cavity interferes with light inside the laser. We have compared the value of Doppler shifted frequency with the velocity variation of the wheel. Frequency dependence on the angle between the moving direction of rotating aluminum wheel and the incident beam also have been proved. As an illustration of the performance of the velocimeter, velocity measurements of a rotating disk are described. Doppler signal shows a good linear relationship with velocity of rotating disk.

  • Rayleigh was an excellent experimenter as well as a theorist. Rayleigh improved Rijke's sounding device by heat and the singing flame into sources of pure tones. Above all, his making of the artificial bird whistle was a critical achievement in the improvement of experimental sound sources. This source made supersonic waves available in the laboratory and thus paved the way to confirmable observations of reflection, refraction, diffraction and interference of sound in the laboratory Furthermore, Rayleigh augmented the sensitivity of sensitive flames as detectors for sound wave. Besides, he devised a phonic wheel which could precisely control the angular velocity of some acoustical instruments and made the Rayleigh-disk that enabled experimenters to measure the absolute value of the sound intensity. These devices enhanced the exactness of acoustical experiments.

  • Surface finishing using magnetorheological (MR) fluid is useful to finish small but not too small workpieces such as those in a few millimeter scale. However, due to the high surface hardness, this finishing process does not seem to be suit for applying to a hard disk slider. In this work, a preliminary study is performed on the finishing of the hard disk slider surface with a mixture of an MR fluid and diamond powder. During a wheel type MR finishing process, centrifugal force is found to be a major factor to cause a reduction in material remove rate (MRR), which is supported by a theoretical model. To facilitate this founding, the rotational speed of tool is confined to 500rpm while a rectilinear alternating motion with the mean speed, which is equivalent to the rotational speed, is additionally applied to the workpieces. As a consequence, MRR of about 2 times of the sole rotational case is obtained. This paper shows that MR finishing process can be used to polish a hard material in millimeter scale efficiently by controlling the speeds of the tool and the workpiece.

  • This paper proposes a control system to keep the balance of a unicycle robot. The robot consists of the disk and wheel, for balancing and driving respectively, and the tile angle is measured and used for balancing by the IMU sensor. A PID controller is designed based on a non-model based algorithm to prove that it is possible to control the unicycle robot without any approximated linear system model such as the sliding mode control algorithm. The PID controller has the advantage that it is simple to design the controller and it does not require an unnecessary complex formula. In this paper, assuming that the pitch and roll axis are dynamically decoupled, each of the two controllers are designed separately. A reaction wheel pendulum method is used for the control of the roll axis, that is, for balancing and an inverted pendulum concept is used for the control of the pitch axis. To confirm the performance of the proposed controllers using MATLAB Simulink, the dynamic equations of the robot are derived.

  • Squeal, a kind of self-excited vibration, is generated by the friction between the disc and the friction materials. It occurs at the ending stage of the braking process, and radiates and audible frequency range of 1 kHz to 10 kHz. Squeal is generated from unstability because of the coupling between the translation and rotation of the system. This instability is caused by the follower force and follower force is normal component of the friction force. In this paper modal analysis of wheel brake system was performed in order to predict the squeal phenomenon. It was shown that the prediction of system instability is possible by FEM. A finite element model of that brake system was made. Some parts of a real brake was selected and modeled. Modal analysis method performs analyses of each brake system component. Experimental modal analysis was performed for each brake components and experimental results were compared with analytical results from FEM. To predict the dynamic unstability of a whole system, the complex eigenvalue analysis for assembly modeling of components confirmed by modal analysis is performed. The finite element models of the disk brake assembly have been constructed, and the squeal noise problems have been solved by complex eigenvalue analysis. The complex eigenvalue analysis results compared with real train test.

  • This paper proposes an attitude and direction control of a single wheel balanced robot. A unicycle robot is controlled by two independent control laws: the mobile inverted pendulum control method for pitch axis and the reaction wheel pendulum control method for roll axis. It is assumed that both roll dynamics and pitch dynamics are decoupled. Therefore the roll and pitch dynamics are obtained independently considering the interaction as disturbances to each other. Each control law is implemented by a controller separately. The unicycle robot has two DC motors to drive the disk for roll and to drive the wheel for pitch. Since there is no force to change the yaw direction, the present paper proposes a method for changing the yaw direction. The angle data are obtained by a fusion of a gyro sensor and an accelerometer. Experimental results show the performance of the controller and verify the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

  • The limited slip differential(LSD) is a device which enables the driving force to be transmitted from one slipping wheel to another wheel in such case that the car is stuck in clay or snow. When the unwanted slipping occurs on one wheel, the LSD temporarily restraints the differential motion to transmit the driving force in the other wheel. So far, many types of LSD were developed such as mechanical lock type, disk clutch type, viscous coupling type, torsion type and multiple clutch type. However these types of LSD is too complicated and expensive, so it is used only for 4WD outdoor vehicles, military vehicles, and a portion of deluxe car. So, many studies has been devoted to improve new types of LSD to cover those demerits of existing LSDs that the hydraulic LSD is developed as arepresentative result of that. The hydraulic LSD which uses the principle of gear pump is packed with viscous oil in tight container. When a slip occurs on one wheel, the hydraulic LSD generates torque caused by high oil pressure in the container. This study has been devoted to suggest an improved hydraulic LSD. In order to achieve it, we designed a new type of hydraulic LSD, produced it and did a rig test with it on real vehicle. From the rig test, it has been confirmed that the new type of hydraulic LSD can be directly applied to exiting vehicles without changing the design criteria

  • Torsion mode or bending mode of drive-line for rear-wheel drive vehicle exists in low frequency band. If resonance exists there between natural mode of driveline and powertrain excitation force, drive-line will manifest excessive vibration response. Also, the vibration response can be transmitted to vehicle body and can induce booming noise. A vehicle in this study exhibits a booming noise problem under specific transmission gear condition. To draw performance improvement plan, finite element analysis technique was used. Modification was evaluated qualitatively and priorities were derived. Finally, effectiveness of best modification was verified through test and full vehicle FE analysis.

  • During braking at a train, thermal energy is generated due to the frictions between disk and lining and wheel and shoe. In general, the braking transfers the kinetic energy into thermal energy. Therefore, the frictional characteristics are varied according to the braking force, the thermal resistance, and the thermostable, etc. Using a Dynamo testing we have studied the frictional characteristics and the thermal distribution to investigate a stable speed and to improve the testing method through comparing and analysing in the measurement of the thermocouple temperature and infrared camera.
