  • High combustion efficiency of hydrogen could make it an ideal source of green energy in the future. At this time, high pressure vessel is the most reasonable method of storing hydrogen. However, such a high pressurized vessel could pose a critical threat if ruptured. For this reason, it is important to understand the mechanism of hydrogen's self-ignition when a high-pressure hydrogen released into air. This paper presents several visualization images as experimental results using high-speed camera. From the visualization images, the ignition is initiated near rupture disk immediately after failure of disk. And the initial ignition and flame is stronger as a rupture pressure increases. However, this ignition region do not affect the general self-ignition mechanism when a high-pressure hydrogen is released into air through tue after failure of disk.

  • In current storage system environment, we use disk mirroring or Chained-declustering scheme to improve data availability and reliability. If disk error is occurred when these schemes are used. we need efficient recovery schemes for these situations. In this paper, it is proposed that a recovery method of disk mirroring that guarantees I/O performance similar to normal state during disk failure, Also, we execute performance evaluation for our recovery scheme and existing schemes in various environments. We show through the simulation that our algorithm outperforms the classic schemes in terms of I/O response time.

  • In this study, the failure of the automotive clutch disk was investigated. During the process of power transmission, clutch disk plates did repeated work of releasing and engaging the pressure plate. The effects of unbalance rotation in the abnormal vibration and torque amplitude under engaged state were measured from this experiment. In order to reduce the unbalance, a modified clutch disk shape was developed. With a three-dimensional model of the stopper pin, to predict fatigue fracture, finite element analysis was carried out and evaluated the improvement of the new clutch disk.

  • We have conducted surface photometry of a spiral galaxy NGC4419, by making use of photographic plates in U, B, V and R-bands taken by 105cm Schmidt Camera at Kiso Observatory. Two dimensional surface brightness distributions as well as luminosity profiles along the major axis are examined in detail to decipher the morphological properties of the galaxy. Analysis of the color distributions of NGC4419 shows that B-V and U-B colors remain constant throughout the galaxy with a weak trend of blue bulge in B-V color. The blue bulge might indicate an active star formation in the nucleus of NGC4419. For a quantitative analysis of the luminosity distribution of NGC4419, the observed luminosity profiles are decomposed into bulge and disk components, assuming the bulge component to follow de Vaucouleurs $\gamma^{1/4}-law$ while the disk component is assumed to be exponential. The fitting generally fails at the central part and at the shoulder near r = 15' where bulge and disk components overlap. The failure at the central part cannot be attributed wholly by the seeing disk since the core-radius of the central plateau is much larger than the width of point spread function. The failure at shoulder could be due to the luminosities from the spiral arms.

  • Indentation, scratch and sliding tests were carried out in this paper to predict the critical loads and the failure modes of TiN-coated specimen. The test specimens were S20C steels with three different substrate hardness, roughness and coating thickness. The scratch test shows that the coating thickness has more dominant effect on the critical load of coated disk than the hardness and the roughness. Using the percent contact load, the ratio of sliding load to the critical scratch load, the cycles to failure are measured to predict the wear-life of TiN film. On the wear-life diagram the percent loads and the cycle to failure show the good linear relation on semi-log coordinate. With decreasing loads, the diagram shows the wear-limit at which the coated disk survives more than 4000 cycles.

  • Dynamic Load/unload (L/UL) mechanism is an alternative to the contact start stop (CSS) technology which eliminates striction and wear failure modes associated with CSS. Inertia latch mechanism becomes important for mobile disk drives because of non operating shock performance. Various types of latch designs have been introduced in hard disk drives to limit a rotary actuator from sudden uncontrolled motion. In this paper, a single spring inertia latch is introduced for a small form optical disk drive, which uses a rotary actuator for moving an optical pick-up. A new small inertia latch with sin91e spring is designed to ensure both feasible and small size. The shock performance of the new inertia latch is experimentally verified.

  • This paper presents hot spot behaviors on the rubbing surface of disk-pad type brake by using coupled thermal-mechanical analysis technique. The height of micro-asperity on the rubbing surface is usually 2∼3 ${\mu}$m in practical disk brakes. Non-uniform micro-contacts between the disk and the rigid friction pads lead to high local temperature distributions, which may cause the material degradation, and develop hot spots, thermal cracks, and brake system failure at the end for a braking period. The friction temperatures on the rubbing surface of disk brakes in which are strongly related to the hot spot and thermal related wears are rapidly concentrated on the micro-contact asperities during braking. The computed FEM results show that the contact stress, friction induced temperature and thermal strain are highly concentrated on the rubbing micro-contact asperities even though the braking speed and force are small during the braking period. This hot spot may directly produce the slippage and various thermal wears on the brake-rubbing surface.

  • In this paper, we present a tool (named VMBootFailMonitor) to detect and analyze a failure of a VM boot creation caused by faults on virtual disks of a Xen-based VM. Also, we presents an architecture and detail analysis process of the virtual disk faults in our tool. Especially, VMBootFailMonitor provides a causual analysis result for a case of VM creation failure based on three modules which performs virtual disk analysis, virtualized system analysis and system log analysis. We also support a comparison result between boot times of normal VMs and fault detection times of VM creation based on abnormal virtual disks. At result, our tool detects VM boot failures (3~6 seconds) within normal VM boot times (8~16 seconds).

  • SIL-based optical disk drive will be promising candidate of next-generation storage devices. However, a near-field optical disk drive requires the robustness to external shock because of extremely small gap between SIL and media. Especially, high-level shock damages permanently to SIL and it makes difficulties in general application. To study the likelihood of failure, the shock analysis must be performed over all others. This research explores the dynamic characteristics of rotating disk through FEM which is compared to analytical solution and experimental modal analysis. We also develop the finite element model of an optical disk drive, which includes rubber mounts, sled base, rotating disk and pickup assembly, and simulate the shock response.

  • The optical disk drive is a basic option on the PC now. So the lower price and higher read/write speed goods are now on market. These trends make many difficulties to produce more reliable drives, comparing when they are treated as high price stuff. In mechanical terms, the lower price and higher read/write speed drive make higher vibration and noise, lower stiffness, even severe fracture of cheap and low quality disk, problems. Due to the internal crash of P/U inside of the drive, the failure of drives, inferior drives, increase more and more by the careless transportation and the originated low stiffness parts. This report is the introduction of the FE simple model to decrease the internal P/U crash problems, and the results.
