  • Leaf blotch of wheat caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana is a major constraint to wheat production, causing significant yield reduction resulting in severe economic impact. The present study characterizes to determine and compare pathogenic variability exist/not based on components of leaf blotch disease development and level of aggressiveness due to agroclimatic condition of B. sorokiniana in wheat. A total of 169 virulent isolates of B. sorokiniana isolated from spot blotch infected leaf from different wheat growing agroclimate of Bangladesh. Pathogenic variability was investigated on a susceptible wheat variety 'kanchan' now in Bangladesh. A clear evidence of positive relationship among the components was recorded. From hierarchical cluster analysis five groups were originating among the isolates. It resolved that a large amount of pathogenic diversity exists in Bipolaris sorokiniana. Variation in aggressiveness was found among the isolates from different wheat growing areas. Most virulent isolates BS 24 and BS 33 belonging to High Ganges River Flood Plain agro-climatic zones considered by rice-wheat cropping pattern, hot and humid weather, high land and low organic matter content in soil. Positive relationship was found between pathogenic variability and aggressiveness with agro-climatic condition.

  • Entomopathogenic nematodes, Heterorhabditidae and Steinernematidae, were isolated from the soil of mulberry field, and the high infectivity and invesiveness were confirmed in the silkworm, Bombyx mori. The cause of non-microbial and acute flacherie was found as an disease by infection with soil-born nematodes through the mulberry leaves contaminated with soil and rainwater. The causal nematodes were isolated by silkworm trap from all of the 5 soil samples collected on the 5 mulberry fields, and identified as 3 strains of Heterorhabditis sp. and 2 of Steinernema sp. Rainwater itself, however, wasn't engaged in the silkworm disease, mulberry leaves with rainwater was rather profitable for cocoon production when the leaf quality was too hard to feed silkworm. Feeding of wet mulberry leaves with rain might not so harm to silkworm when the condition of rearing room to be kept at suitable temperature and ventilated well. Nematode infection of silkworm could be occurred by harvesting and feeding of contaminated mulberry leaves on the weather condition of rainy and wind. For the prevention of nematode infection, silkworms should be fed the leaves harvested from the higher portion of the mulberry tree in rainy days. For an oppositional application of this susceptibility of silkworms to nematode, might be useful on the collection and amplification of nematode agents for biotic control of pest insects.

  • Spontaneous hemopneumothorax is a rare disease, and it can cause life threatening condition. It is characterized by the accumulation of more than 400 mL of blood and air in the pleural cavity without any other apparent causes. A previously healthy 22-year-old female patient presented with acute chest pain and dyspnea. Chest X-ray and computed tomography revealed a massive hemopneumothorax in the left hemithorax. The images showed a completely collapsed left lung with right-sided tracheal deviation, several pleural adhesion bands, and fluid collection with air-fluid level. We emergently performed a closed thoracostomy, and then 560 mL of fresh bloods were initially drained. We considered an emergent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for pulmonary wedge resection and bleeding control because of the massive hemothorax. However, the patient's vital signs were stabilized after blood transfusion and supportive cares for re-expansion pulmonary edema. The patient discharged from the hospital on 11th in-hospital day after removal of the chest tube, and there had not been any recurrence of the pneumothorax for 10 months. We suggest that treatment strategy should be decided upon individually based on the patient's condition and clinical course of the disease.

  • In this study, we prepared magnesium ion containing oxide films formed on the Ti-6Al-4V using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment. Ti-6Al-4V surface was treated using PEO in Mg containing electrolytes at 270V for 5 min. The phase, composition and morphology of the Mg ion containing oxide films were evaluated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and filed-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). The biocompatibility of Mg ion containing oxide films was evaluated by immersing in simulated body fluid (SBF). According to surface properties of PEO films, the optimum condition was formed when the applied was 270 V. The PEO films formed in the condition contained the properties of porosity, anatase phase, and near 1.7 Ca(Mg)/P ratio in the oxide film. Our experimental results demonstrate that Mg ion containing oxide promotes bone like apatite nucleation and growth from SBF. The phase and morphologies of bone like apatite were influenced by the Mg ion concentration.

  • Potato late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans, is one of the important diseases in potato cultivation areas. Though the incidence of late blight was depend on the inoculums and climatic condition In each fields, the foliar blight was reached to 100% under the severe disease pressure condition in 2003. Outbreak of foliar blight was concentrated from May and July and evaluation of ten fungicides to control of late blight was made at Daekwallryoung area in potato fields. Based on the company recommendation, those fungicides were applied by a sprayer at the recommended rates on a weekly application schedule. Effect of ten fungicides on foliar blight was based on area under disease progress curve (AUDPC). Across all fungicides was reduced by 77% in AUDPC and dimethomorph was reduced by 92% in AUDPC during the same period, respectively. Those fungicide were inhibited the mycelial growth of isolate with different rate in chemical amended medium and several fungicides were completely limited the growth of isolate.

  • The inner ear constitutes a complex organ responsible for auditory perception and equilibrium. It comprises diverse cellular entities operating collaboratively to perceive and transmit sensory information to the brain. Inner ear disease is a sophisticated and multifactorial scenario substantially impacting the quality of life of affected individuals. Gaining insights into the developmental process of the inner ear is crucial for diagnosing and treating inner ear diseases, which can lead to hearing loss and impaired balance. Recent research in inner ear development and associated pathophysiology has focused on several pivotal domains, including identifying new genes and signaling pathways involved in inner ear development, using stem cells for inner ear regeneration, and developing novel therapies for inner ear diseases. Recent advances in genetics research have shed new light on the fundamental etiologies of inner ear diseases, with a growing body of evidence suggesting that genetic mutations might exert a pivotal influence on the development and progression of this condition. In this review, we have delved into certain common genetic mutations linked to inner ear disorders. We also discussed ongoing research endeavors and future directions for understanding the genetic mechanisms underlying this condition and potential therapeutic avenues.

  • Acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy (AHEI) is a rare, benign, vascular condition that primarily affects infants, and is possibly associated with respiratory viral infections. A case involving a 47-day-old male infant, who was admitted with a 1-day history of fever, is presented. Initially, the patient developed an erythematous macular rash and patches on the hands and feet, along with swelling. The fever subsided after the first day of hospitalization, and the patient remained in generally good condition with normal oral intake. Timely recognition of AHEI is crucial to avoid unnecessary medical investigations or therapies, and to promptly identify any rare but potentially severe complications that may arise.
