Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop a substantive theory on self-management conducted by the adolescents with chronic kidney disease from their lived experience. Methods: Data was collected through in-depth interviews from May to December in 2015 with thirteen adolescents with chronic kidney disease. The data collected were analyzed on the basis of Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory. Results: The core of the category found in this study was "overcoming the unstable sense of self- control and integrating disease experience into their life". The causal conditions triggering the central phenomenon were "restriction in daily life" and "manifestation and aggravation of symptom". The central phenomenon in the experience of self-management within the adolescents with chronic kidney disease was "unstable sense of self control". The intervening condition for unstable self control were "micro system support" and "motivational resources". This study found that the adolescents with chronic kidney disease followed a series of strategies when they faced the central phenomenon, including; passive coping, reappraisal of illness, active coping, compliance with treatment, controlling physical activity, and adjusting school life. With these strategic approaches, the adolescents with chronic kidney disease could maintain their active lifestyles and achieve their health behaviors. The process of self-management by these adolescents passed through four phases; limited experience caused by diseases, effort for normalization, reorganizing their daily lives, and integration with daily lives and self-management. Conclusion: This Study explored the process and experience of self-management of adolescents with chronic kidney disease. These findings can be used for basis for developing substantive theory and nursing intervention strategy for adolescents with chronic kidney diseases.
Marek's disease (MD) is a highly contagious lymphoproliferative disease of poultry caused by the oncogenic herpesvirus designated Marek's disease virus (MDV). MD has a worldwide distribution and is thought to cause an annual loss over US$ one billion to the poultry industry. Originally described as a paralytic disease, today MD is mostly manifested as an acute disease with tumors in multiple visceral organs. MD is controlled essentially by the widespread use of live vaccines administered either in ovo into 18-day-old embryos or into chicks immediately after they hatch. In spite of the success of the vaccines in reducing the losses from the disease in the last 30 years, MDV strains have shown continuous evolution in virulence acquiring the ability to overcome the immune responses induced by the vaccines. During this period, different generations of MD vaccines have been introduced to protect birds from the increasingly virulent MDV strains. However, the virus will be countered each new vaccine strategy with ever more virulent strains. In spite of this concern, currently field problem from MD is likely to be controled by strategy of using bivalent vaccine. But, potential risk factors for outbreak of MD are still remained in this condition. The major factors can be thought that improper handling and incorrect administration of the vaccine, infection prior to establishment of immunity, suppression of immune system by environmental stress and outbreaks of more virulent MDV strain by using vaccine and genetic resistance of host.

In the situation providing the aged society, the contents of the symptoms of senility centering around the aged-pulse condition were arranged. The results were as follows. In the questions about the aged symptoms, the results of indicating the gradual physical-age following the aged symptoms with the real age(from 40 to 100, 7 grade) and the gradual physical-age following the ageing grade of male and female (the 3 grade of the female / the 4 grade of the male) could have the differentiations. And the distinction of the aged pulse condition was observed two pulse condition ; the one is the minute pulse condition(Mi, Sei ;微細) as lowering function and the other is the Hyun, Ghin(弦, 緊) pulse condition as the blood's tention and contration.
We report a 53-year-old male having Kennedy disease who complained of severe bilateral tinnitus and autophony. He was diagnosed as patulous Eustachian tube based on the observation of fluttering motion of the tympanic membrane associated with respiration, which is presumed to occur secondary to bulbar weakness. The patulous Eustachian tube affected the management of his respiratory problem by impairing his ability to tolerate BiPAP. We report this rare condition with a literature review.
Gak-gi-byung in Korean Medicine have many things in common with Beriberi disease, Guillain-Barre syndrome, Transverse myelitis and Cauda equina syndrome. Dong-Ui-Bo-Gam define Gak-gi-byung as syndrome that includes sudden lower limbs weakness, pain and edema. Gak-gi-byung start from the foregoing symptoms and could progress to general digestive, neurological or respiratory symptoms is found on many medical practitioners. In this case, we described a 60-years old man diagnosed as Gak-gi-byung in Korean Medicine. He complained Rt lower limb weakness, Rt Knee Clumsiness and limitation of his Rt knee & ankle motor. And his condition was improved through Korean Medical treatment such as acupuncture and herbal medicine like 'Chung-yul-sa-seup-tang' about 15 days.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a critical condition with high morbidity and mortality. Although several medications are available, there are no definite treatments. However, recent advances in the understanding of stem and progenitor cells in the lung, and molecular changes during re-alveolization after pneumonectomy, have made it possible to envisage the regeneration of damaged lungs. With this background, numerous studies of stem cells and various stimulatory molecules have been undertaken, to try and regenerate destroyed lungs in animal models of COPD. Both the cell and drug therapies show promising results. However, in contrast to the successes in laboratories, no clinical trials have exhibited satisfactory efficacy, although they were generally safe and tolerable. In this article, we review the previous experimental and clinical trials, and summarize the recent advances in lung regeneration therapy for COPD. Furthermore, we discuss the current limitations and future perspectives of this emerging field.
An 8-year-old male mynah (Gracula spp.) was presented for depression, anorexia, and respiratory distress. The patient's diet consisted of sponge cake and yogurt alone. Physical examination revealed high body condition score (4/5), abdominal distention, and severe orthopnea. Hepatomegaly was observed on abdominal radiographs. The patient died 4 h after presentation, and severe hepatomegaly was observed at necropsy. Based on histopathological findings, the bird was definitively diagnosed with iron storage disease with concurrent hepatic lipidosis.
A new bacterial disease was found on leaves of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana plant grown under vinyl-house condition in winter of 1998 in Taejeon. the first symptoms of the disease are the appearance of the water-soaked and light brown spots. Later they become soft rot with brown color. Causal bacteria were isolated from diseased tissues and the same symptoms as the natural infection were developed on Kalanchoe blossfeldiana leaves by needle-prick inoculation. The causal bacterium was identified Erwinia hervicola by its bacteriological characteristics. This is the first reported of this bacterium to occur on kalanchoe blossfeldiana plant in Korea. Therefore, we proposed to name the diseases as \"bacterial soft rot of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana\" by E. herbiocla.
This paper presents a study for a development of the oriental medical treatment on the gastric disease caused by Helicobacter Pylori. Helicobacter Pylori is observed in stomach mucosa and it is caused gastric disease via various routes. Helicobacter Pylori is spread generally mouth to mouth by men. So it is related to personal health condition or life style. The treatment of Helicobacter Pylori is an antibiotic combination therapies, but it caused a problem of side effect and drug resistant. In the oriental medical treatment, an immunopotentiation reduces an infective rate of Helicobacter Pylori and prevents a progressive gastric disease.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an ambulatory care-sensitive condition, and effective treatment of outpatients can prevent worsening of the illness and hospitalization. Current COPD guidelines provide appropriate guidance for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with COPD. In fact, it has been shown that when appropriate guidance and treatment are performed, the morbidity and mortality rates of COPD patients are reduced. However, there is a gap between the clinical guidelines and the actual clinical treatment. Therefore, the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) conducted an evaluation of the adequacy of COPD diagnosis and treatment using the Claims Database of HIRA. This review provides a summary of the COPD adequacy assessment results reported by the HIRA and some brief comments on the results.
